Title: Tulsa Art of BBQ @ ONEOK Field
Post by: Gaspar on April 06, 2010, 04:41:30 PM
More details coming soon.
The dates of the 13th Annual Art of Barbeque are September 24th and 25th at the new ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa.  This is the home for the Tulsa Drillers baseball team, our new partner.  We are very excited and have mapped out the space.  We will probably be a little smaller with 45 to 50 teams.  KCBS is on board—we have a sanctioned event and our KCBS reps, Ralph and Karen Williams, all lined up.

Mid-Life Crisis will be back to perform.  And the Blue Dome Arts Festival is going to have an art show that weekend on the streets from Blue Dome to the Art of Barbeque.

It’s going to be great fun – and a little cooler weather!

Danny Daniels is our Event Chair.

Hope this gives you enough!

Thanks.  We intend for AOB to continue for years to come!  This was a great move for us financially, and community-wise!

Sounds like someone forgot to tell Ken Busby that the Blue Dome Arts Festival went back to May, or is this an additional festival?

I love the outside the ballpark area for festivals. This will be a great event!

Blue Dome district....

Who would have thought that an old gas station, turned bar would become the center of Tulsa rejuvenation.
Amazing.  Actually, that is pretty cool.  One thing that is tragically sad is the loss of so many of the older buildings closer to main street, just to get a World Trade Center clone (Williams Tower).  Like the Orpheum and Rialto theaters.

I remember when the Blue Dome was the "Veteran's Bar" (Ross Catron owner), and either draw beer or a red beer was a quarter.  And the old men gathered in back for dominos.  And the dome room had an old pool table that was kind of crappy, but a lot of fun to play on, even if the felt was beer soaked and stained.  So smokey, there was always a haze, making it difficult to see sometimes.

And the pawn shop next door was a Ford dealer back in the twenties/thirties...

Ah,...the good old days.  Sure do miss some of them....
And that parking lot next door to that was a bus garage where Greyhound did maintenance on the buses.

Well, looks like we're gonna get a storm.  May have to go out storm-chasing.  Or just sit here and wait, so don't have to work so hard.

Ok. . . All is clear now.  there is a second arts, crafts, and music festival that will be unveiled for the Blue Dome District coinciding with the new Art of BBQ at OneOk field.

The idea is to make the event am more Tulsa-centric event and feature more local businesses, craftsmen and artisans.  Rather than focusing on a one day food fest, the new festival will attract a more diverse crowd of patrons and incorporate a broader range of offerings.

The teams, visitors and participants will be able to taste great food, art, music and performances in an atmosphere that is truly unique to Tulsa, and offers far more opportunity to gain recognition as THE TULSA event for both BBQ and arts lovers.

The previous sponsors, and a wide range of new groups will find greater opportunity to gain far more bang for their sponsorship buck in an event that is significantly more focused on the mission of promoting Tulsa and the arts.

So. . . Rather than just hunkering down in 100+ heat, fighting mosquitoes, we will be able to spend far more time discovering and enjoying a diverse offering of art, music, and fantastic food.

Sure, some national teams will not be able to attend, but this opens more opportunity for local groups to gain recognition and move up the ranks in a KCBS sanctioned event.  It also allows those who travel from outside of Tulsa for the event, to have a far better image of our town than running back and forth across a busy street from a mall parking lot.

I for one am thrilled!!

So the Blue Dome Arts Festival will still coincide with Mayfest and there will be an additional festival to coincide with AOB at Oneok Field.  Thats a:

I think my target for a trip to Tulsa is narrowing since I can't make Mayfest, this makes for a good weekend, and for me it will be a chance to see all of the changes in that area, check out the art and of course the BBQ. The first BBQ book I bought was put out by the KCBS called "Pig Out, The Passion of BBQ" and was my bible for learning to smoke and slow cook.
