Title: Downtown Bars
Post by: SXSW on March 31, 2010, 03:15:21 PM
The thread about the Cellar Dweller and the mention of Crystal Pistol, a place I haven't been, got me thinking about the other bars downtown that I may not necessarily know about.  I have been to Soundpony up on N. Main in Brady, and of course McNellies's on 1st.  What are some of the other good bars in Blue Dome and in Brady?  I usually go to SoBo or Brookside when I do go out in Tulsa but want to frequent downtown more.

Nothing....

Hunt Club is a great place.  Nice, inexpensive menu with good items.  Since they serve food smoking is only allowed outside.  The Pistol is next to Soundpony, FYI.  Arnie's is great when the weather is nice enough to sit outdoors.  I'm not tolerant of smoke at all anymore so I generally will choose places where smoking is not allowed indoors.  I thought Enzo's was pretty "meh", just not my style.

FOTD tells me Club 209 and Majestic are great places.

Boulder Grill on 7th and Boulder is a nice quiet place with Marshalls and Guinness on tap.  (Decent patio)

Trula in the Mayo

Tiamos on 3rd and Cheyenne

Roof of El guapo if you want some beers and aren't in a hurry

Arnies

Yokozuna

Enso is a great place for HH if you're looking for quiet.  If you stay long enough it becomes much less quiet.  North of Yokozuna across the street.

Daily Grill

These are places you can eat too (except Enso and Arnies ) but are good comfortable bars I enjoy.

You mention Enso is good for Happy Hour, what are some others that have specials and are cool places for HH?  Does El Guapo have HH margaritas on the rooftop?

ABLE only allows "non-alcoholic food product" (3.2 beer) HH specials unless shots are pre-mixed and offered all week.

I'm not sure if there's been a way found around the "you're never adult enough to drink in Oklahoma" laws.

I've always enjoyed the atmosphere in Lola's at Main and Brady.  There used to be a cool place over at 3rd/Kenosha - it looks like they're renovating though.

Lola's, good one.

Caz's chow house has a nice bar.  Not big on Caz's across the street due to the smoke and the youth.

I do dig the bars up by Cain's as well.

3rd and Kenosha, are you talking about Tiny Lounge/818?

Edited to add that the word is that the Penthouse lounge at the Mayo is opening to the public on the weekends.  I've been.  The lounge is nice, the rooftop will be great, the bartenders needed work.

What would the area be without all that?

And the funny thinking is that people who will go to the ballpark will spill over after the games....not likely. They don't even show up in Hicktown in OK Shitty after a Thunders game...

I haven't heard about this one but a rooftop bar on top of the Mayo sounds great.  Will they be open just on weekends?

That's what I understood.  Now remember, I was at a bar exercising my liver so take that as you will.

I'd be very interested in the Mayo Penthouse, too. Anybody got any further info?

All the previous suggestions in this thread are good ones. I don't get the infatuation with the Hunt Club, though. Been there twice and there food tastes like it's straight from the Wal-Mart freezer section. I ordered a pizza and I'm sure it was a DiGiorno. I ordered a Chicago dog another time and it was all microwave rubbery.

Both times I went there were late, when they were only serving their very small late-night menu. Maybe I need to give it a try during regular menu hours.

I haven't been there when it's busy to get a feel for the crowd, but Enso is a pretty good place. Nice draft beer selection. They're all about fresh fruits in their drinks, squeezing oranges right in front of you. It's the kind of place that won't look at you funny if you order a Mint Julep for Kentucky Derby day. I haven't yet had one, but their Guinness floats look spectacular. Plus I hear they have a game room. It's just a really cozy bar. Lots of good seating, couches and such.

I never order pizza in bars and expect anything spectacular in return.

Try some of the mediterranean offerings- not gourmet, but good for what they are and the price point.  It's grub.  If I want a great meal I'll go elsewhere and pay for it or make it at home.  Their sandwiches are good, and their chili pie is a guilty pleasure of mine.  They are rather limited in offerings mainly due to only having a convection oven at their disposal.

Good deal on happy hour dogs up at the Soundpony.  It's filler, but again, I generally don't go to bars for the food  ;)

It seems to be pretty hit-or-miss. I really liked their frito pie, and my friend raved about their mac-n-cheese. I wouldn't call any of their offerings gourment, but certainly better than the fast food offerings that late at night.

I enjoy Enso when there aren't too many people. When it gets packed though, it is a bit difficult to get a drink (same issue with Electric Circus). I also find the type of people to be greatly varying from night-to-night.

Please tell me that the outside area is true. The last time that I had a view of downtown was in 1982 when a friend of mine worked security at the then TJC downtown campus and we went up to the roof and I took some shots looking towards the BOK Tower and the old Cathy's furniture. That view from the Mayo is spectacular. Gives me more incentive to stay there when I come out in September.

Email I received from Donna Keffer, Director of Sales at the Mayo:

Currently we are only doing private parties out of The Penthouse and we are able to serve food. The patio was just completed last month.

Yes there are plans to open The Penthouse to the public. Unfortunately, we do not have a date to open just yet.

The Mayo's rooftop penthouse is open to the public Thursday-Saturday from 5pm-2am, per their facebook. Apparently it's been open for a month or two, at least. Not sure how I missed this news.

I'm there, ASAP!!!

They have some photos of the penthouse on their facebook. The joint looks way too classy for the likes of me.

It's a good place.  They do a nice job of mixing drinks there.  We watched the fireworks July 4th.

Good views.

The elevators are unlocked to go to penthouse so you don't need a key anymore.

Also on the bars topic, Elote was packed last night. It was great to walk down that street at midnight on a weeknight and see dozens of people. With Elote, Mod's and the new hotel, Boston is alive again. A couple years ago, you would've been standing on Boston from midnight until until after daybreak trying to count a couple dozen people.

Unfortunately, they had the whole sidewalk roped off for their beer garden. Great to see people out and about, but it's not so great trying to walk down the street when a business has comandeered the entire sidewalk. Even during normal evening hours, it's somewhat difficult to walk through Elote's patio. I imagine the disabled would have a very tough time navigating that.

This is where the poor streetscaping on Boston really hurts. Instead of creating plenty of room for pedestrians while  still maintaining adequate room for cars, we had to keep four driving lanes plus two parking lanes. Apparently whoever made that decision was a time traveler from the 1950s.

Same thing in Brookside.  I agree though, nice to see Boston alive again.  Now if only they can get something to go in the old Jave Dave's space in the Philtower.  Something that is open late.

That kind of thing seems very Dallas-like. Hopefully we learn the error of their ways and start taking cues on urbanity from places better than OKC and Dallas.

Even their most urban areas are pretty poor. McKinney Ave is very crowded to make room for lots of cars rather than making room for people in one tiny sliver of that giant metroplex. It's downright frightening at times to try to walk down that street with a narrow sidewalk and cars two feet away. Surprised I haven't heard of any drunks plowing into a patio full of bar patrons.

Elote was packed for a long time last night. I completely agree about them commandeering the sidewalk. I thought the same thing the first time I went to one of the luchador matches. I understand that there's not much else going on that late on Boston, but you can't just block off an entire sidewalk like that. And with Nate there last night, it's clear that it can be a real problem for those in wheelchairs.

And I really wish that we would narrow a lot of our streets, widen the sidewalks and add more trees. Our sidewalks are more like an occasional afterthought instead of designed with intention and focus on being GREAT sidewalks. Read Jane Jacobs's chapters on the importance of sidewalks in the Death and Life of Great American Cities. It will really underscore a lot of the things we've been talking about.

On another note, I'd like to see Elote get the second floor of the building and add a viewing balcony overlooking the wrestling wring. It'd be a great place for parties and they don't have to have it open all the time, but on match nights, it'd be great to have.
Title: Re: Downtown Bars
Post by: OurTulsa on August 06, 2010, 05:30:16 PM
It's illegal for them to block the sidewalk, per ADA you at least have to have a 4 ft. clear walkway through.  Maybe they should move into the parallel parking area.  Put some planters in around the perimeter to cushion the seating area from parked cars and you could have a cozy outdoor seating area.

Not sure the walkway is four feet when they just have the usual tables and chairs setup out there. The sidewalk's not really wide enough for outside seating.

Good thing we kept that four lanes of traffic plus two parking lanes.

Good thing we kept that four lanes of traffic plus two parking lanes.

I remember one of the re-design concepts for Boston provided for wide sidewalks with a reduction in vehicle lanes.  That concept went away fast thanks to the entrenched mindset that defers to vehicular travel everywhere.  It's truly unfortunate and as we are beginning to experience and will continue to experience as downtown returns it was short-sighted.

We got it right with Main St.'s redesign fortunately and there are other streets downtown that have wide sidewalks.  I hope that as we redo many of our other streets we'll think about all the many enjoyable and necessary things that can/should be accommodated on city streets.

Speaking of rooftops, I was on Cherry Street last night for St. Paddy's and noticed there is a rooftop patio on top of the building where Ascent, White Owl, etc. are located.  Not sure if it's just for the office up there or not.  I was thinking to myself it would make a great place for a restaurant/bar patio, especially since the space next to White Owl is vacant which could have access up there...
