Title: Any Food Challenge Joints in Tulsa?
Post by: guido911 on March 09, 2010, 08:07:59 PM
I'm a big fan of Man v. Food and similar pig out shows. Are there any restaurants in the local area that has food challenges (i.e. quantity, heat, etc.)?

the ''Working mans cafe" a breakfast place im coweta has a hungry man plate, eat it all in 30 minutes and its free, otherwise its about $11,
3 eggs
hash browns,
4bacon strips,
ham steak
4sausage links
toast/ or biscuit gravy
3 pancakes--- this is the killer, when you see the pancakes, you just give up. they are platter sized.

What's on an Incinerator?  I assume it's a pizza.  I doubt I could eat a large one but the name sounds interesting for a small or medium.

I was thinking: "That's no big deal...Meh!" Then I caught the part about the pancakes.  I've seen some joint on Man V. Food with massive pancakes and thought: "What's the point in eating till you are sick on purpose?"

Trying to remember it all off the top of my head..
Pepperoni, Hot Links, Sliced Habaneros, Wasabi Arrabiata sauce, Ghost Pepper Siracha swirl on the top.

I ate half a medium fine except it gave me heartburn. For Trogdor, it cured his heatburn, go figure. I'm with you in the fact I'm not sure I can eat a large of any well topped pizza, regardless of heat.

Pizza, chile, spaghetti w/tomato sauce, pretty much anything with preserved tomatos gives me heartburn but I still like the taste so I might as well enjoy it the first time.  Surprisingly, hot chile peppers generally don't bother me and I like spicey food, except salt.  I've grown accustomed to low salt foods, which is one reason I don't eat a lot of restaurant food.

I know a guy that would bankrupt such places.  And no, it's not me.  The wings place on 11th by TU (that might be Wings 2 Go but not sure) he ate 25 in 6 minutes.  He ate so much that when we were on a trip to Shreveport, we stopped at a Western Sizzlin' in Texarkana for the buffet.  Mind you, this is a place where they provide the plates each time they come back to your table.  After a while, the waitress quit bringing plates to him.

The only other place I've been where I've seen such a thing was at the Big Texan in Amarillo.  You have to eat the 72 oz steak.

THERE IS A KEN'S PIZZA IN CHANDLER, OK.!!
On Route 66!

And another one in Prague and Eufala.  And the Chandler one tastes the same.  (Better than it's step-child Mazzio's).

I thought they were all gone.  Wonderful!  Road Trip!!!

It's been a while since I ate in a Ken's vs. a Mazzio's but I don't remember Ken's being any better than Mazzio's.

The big difference is in the crust and the sauce.  Ken's originally was a thin, crispy crust, with a very subtle sauce.  Mazzio's started out as a thicker crust and a more intense sauce.  (I am suspicious there may be MSG in it.  Due to the intensity and the friends who get MSG type headaches when eat there.)

I like them both a lot, but Ken's is a particular favorite.  As was Shakey's.

That would be no problem for my 19 year old son.   We call him the human garbage disposal.

I may have found the "subtle sauce" a bit bland but don't really remember.  I like the crust thick enough to hold a bunch of stuff.  A thin layer of sauce, cheese, and a few slices of pepperoni just doesn't cut it for me.

However, I don't remember disliking Kens, Shakeys, or another one that I can't remember the name of that I think was on 51st just west of either Sheridan or Yale on the north side of the street.

I like pizza.  I just need to have some Maalox on hand for later.

There was a Shakey's out there.  Also up on Sheridan at about 17th.  Seems like there was a Godfathers somewhere out south for a while, too, but can't remember where.

Pizza Huts, too.

Also for the 'bulk burger' approach there was a Sandy's burgers over on Yale (32nd?) that sold 10 cheeseburgers for a dollar and 12 hamburgers for the dollar.

I kind of remember a pirate captain/ship theme but am not sure.

It was Shotgun Sams on 51st and on Sheridan.  I always enjoyed their pizza.  Kens is different than Mazzios, I've never really cared for Mazzios, the cheese tastes weird to me.

Yep, Shotgun Sam's.  I have no idea where I got the pirate/captain idea.
I liked their pizza too.

Thanks.

Are you thinking of Pizza Inn? One of my favorites from the past was Hemi's Pizza.

I can still vividly remember the taste of Shakey's cheese pizza.  We ate there all the time at the one on Brookside.  They had a drink called green grog as well, something similar to Mountain Dew as I remember.

I remember the Shakey's in Illinois. It had a viewing window so you could watch your pizza get made (big thing in the 70s). They also had awesome potato "chips", I guess that is what you would call them.

You don't have to go that far.  There is one in Sapulpa.

750 East Taft Avenue
Sapulpa, OK 74066

Oh, yeah...I forgot about that one!  It's more fun to go down the "Mother Road".  But Sapulpa will be good, too.

Shotgun's Sam's - that's the one I couldn't remember.  It was good, too.

We don't have any suitable for the challenge here.  Bill's would be great if he made an 8 lb burger.

Or maybe Big Al's subs - get one of the quarter mile subs...

They just don't do "overdo" here like some areas of the country.
