Bystanders Step Over Tulsa Homicide Victim To Pick Up Food

TULSA, OK -- Tulsa Police say out of numerous potential witnesses, only one person had any information to offer in a shooting overnight Sunday at the Chicken Hut restaurant, 1500 E. Apache. The shooting victim, 27-year-old Valentino Verner, later died of his wounds at a Tulsa hospital. Restaurant patrons even shoved past emergency workers, stepping over the victim to get their food.

Police, firefighters and ambulance personnel responded to a call of shots fired at the restaurant at about 3 a.m. They say when they arrived at the Chicken Hut, they found Verner lying on the ground in front of the restaurant's pick-up window. He had been shot multiple times, according to Tulsa Police Sergeant Mike Eckert. They had a difficult time getting through the crowd to provide aid to the victim, and no one was trying to help the injured man, Eckert said. People were instead stepping over Verner to get to their food orders. Eckert said customers even shoved past emergency personnel as they went to the take out window.

After questioning the crowd, they found only one person – a relative of the victim - who had any information about the shooting. That man could only say the suspect was a man in a blue jacket with a hood. "Exactly one person chose to call 911 to advise us of the shooting," Eckert said. He added that there were more than 100 people in the parking lot when emergency personnel arrived. "Nobody wants to talk to us. No one wants to give us any information," he said.

Police are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information on this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS.

Wow.

In the tales of two cities those in the north city has the rule "don't tell."  The sending of police officers to investigate in that city is a needless waist of money.  The crime will be solved by payouts through the crime stoppers.  They seem to be the best solvers that are available at this time.  ;D

I've been wanting to try this place.  Anyone think this was an isolated incident or should I feel apprehensive about getting some late night chicken here?

I'll bet the reason that hardly anyone called 911 after the shooting was because the victim was a neighborhood thug that the locals are glad is gone.

And an OSCN search of the dead guy's name pops up all sorts of badness ... forcible entry, orders of protection, etc.

I could be wrong, but what happened at the restaurant bears considerable resemblance to the infamous "no witnesses" case to a killing that occurred in broad daylight in downtown Skidmore, Mo., nearly 30 years ago.

As one woman who we were doing work for, living next to the RR tracks said "don't come over here after 4:00".

100+ people at 3am?

If there are 100+ people congregated outside of a business at 3am, I expect a cop to be there.  I mean they are patrolling the area.  How do you not notice large groups of people milling around. . . at 3am?

I'm betting they were not up early for church.

Another thing. . . A homicide has just taken place, why wasn't the place locked down and taped off during the response?  How do you effectively secure the safety of first responders in an open crime scene.

I remember a time when first response teams were not allowed to approach a scene in certain neighborhoods without police protection.  This could have been much worse.

Probably to illustrate how bad things are going to get since the city was stingy with the FOP er TPD.

Just my $.02. ~100 people at 3am at a chicken place in mid 30's temps. Am I wrong or are they selling more than chicken. Plus I didn't know that there was anything open at 3am on a Sunday morning other than Waflle House, Denny's and Whataburger.

I forgot. Last call 1:30am, out the door by 2:00am. I was a bartender at a place that used to be on N. Sheridan called Doolittles across from the airport.

I like some fried chicken but I've never had chicken so good I would stand outside in freezing temperatures at 3 in the morning, stepping around the deceased to get it.

That has GOT to be some good chicken.

okay, a thought I was batting around in my head.  Why not pass an ordinance where we can charge "hot spot" establisments like this an "excessive use" fee for having a high rate of response calls?  This would help defray the costs of having extra patrols to deal with the higher rate of crimes at these establishments.  This would mean that to avoid the costs the establishments would have to do something about it's clientale, or pass the cost off to those that are creating the problem.

Do you think that maybe people don't talk to the cops at the scene because they're waiting for Crime Stoppers to offer a reward for information? And, as they say, "Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards and anonymity to individuals who provide information about criminal activity that results in an arrest."

Intelligent well thought out response!  Think I saw this same thing scrawled on a latrine wall at a pub crawl.

I think they don't talk to cops because they don't want to end up like the guy laying face down in the parking lot. Witnesses are being killed, assumed witnesses are being killed in some of these cases. Sucks to live over there, especially at that time of night.

It's quite obvious - just as others have alluded:  the shack is sellin' more than chicken and it's not on the menu.

Having done contract work for citizens of the north city in the past when it was so dark one could not see a person unless they were smiling, these are the people of the night who gather after darkness.   They are of the generations of those who were involved in the burnout in 21.  The south city is dragging their feet on the settlement of the black officers suit.  It is creating a group of restless teens and very young adults in a failure to recognize them even after their attempts to seek justification for the destruction of their heritage.  Drugs are available there the same as they are available in all the Tulsa schools but indicating that the gathering of this lost generation is just as erroneous as saying the school gather the children to dispense drugs.

The problem is not a simple one but its conclusion may have far reaching effects.  The accumulation of events such as expanding the present one in order to further divide the city will require the acceptance of this lost generation as they struggle for their existence.  We have taught them the disrespect of life by making fun of them in phrases such as included in the title of this form. Patience should prevail in the instance matter as their number are growing faster than ours.

There's that, and also, perhaps some of these people at the scene are just plain uncooperative to begin with.
