Answer me this.

Who runs full page color ads in the Tulsa World on a regular basis?  Answer  Hospitals and Universities.

Who has money to burn and whose prices are out of wack with the rest of the economy?  Hospitals and Universities.

Healthcare and Higher Learning used to be something of a public trust but now it's all about making a buck and it's damaging us.

Hospitals and universities are supporting those hideous liberal Lortons with their ads.  ;)  (couldn't resist, buddy)

Hospitals and Universities also get a lot of private donations.  I'm curious what their rates would be like if they didn't get donations.

In reality, my understanding is that St. John and St. Francis are both chartered as non-profit hospitals.  But they plough a ton back into infrastructure on their campuses and building new campuses.

Yeah.  The pain that hospitals relieve, the lives they help bring into the world, the lives they save, and the medical innovations that occur there are nothing but smoke and mirror BS. All that crap should be free.
FAIL.

Not in this country.  Both are FOR PROFIT industries.  That is why The Unite States has the best healthcare in the world and the best higher education system in the world.

Had they been "something of a public trust," we would be sick and stupid.

I think it's funny that within your rhetorical world there's only room for the status quo or nothing.  It's either the way it is now or we'll live in a world without hospitals.  I'm not sure why it's so hard to imagine a third way where things are better for everybody.  You know:  affordable healthcare, innovation, AND profits for the industry.

I think its funny that you couldn't see I was responding to an over the top BS post. Also, I have already stated that some reform is needed and made suggestions (portability, tort reform, health savings accounts). Next time you want to be clever or something, think first.

Moderator,

Can we get a sarcasm on and sarcasm off flag, kind of like the smiley faces, to be blatantly obvious to the most casual observer?

For profit higher education? University of Phoenix and Platt College?

And we simply don't have the best healthcare system in the world, far from it, just the most expensive.

Oh, no, not that again.  You aren't going to start spouting off the stats on life expectency without considering we are the fattest and most sedentary nation on earth again, are you?  We DO have the most abused health care system on earth, that's one reason it's so expensive, amongst others.

Perhaps that's an indication of how useless our health care system is at preventative medicine.

We're really good at lifesaving heroics, medical devices, and patent drugs. Which is good, since our complete failure on the preventative medicine front makes those things more needed here in the US.

Oh well, at least we seem to have reached a plateau of fatness, despite my best efforts.

The best key to preventative medicine lies in the hands of the individual.  The biggest problem in "preventative medicine" for those who have one, is people taking a reactionary approach in accessing the healthcare system and it's got little, if anything, to do with not having access to it.  It's laziness, indifference, and fear of some snot-nosed physician telling them to put down the pork rinds, exercize, and quit smoking.

Take a quick Google search of all the free clinics available in any urban area of the United States.  There's no shortage of resources available.

Several years ago when healthcare was less expensive I had to buy an individual plan.  After much research I discovered the best I could do was a $5,000 deductible and a $300 monthly premium.  It would be much higher today, several years later.

Just about everyone (Republican and Democrat) with individual plans has something similar.  And everyone with these plans say, verbatim, "we just pray that we don't get sick."

Republicans who get hysterical about the prospect of government involvement in healthcare stop and reflect on their own policies and say, "We just pray that we don't get sick."

Well guess what – you will get sick.

And if you are lucky enough to get treatment, one of the hospitals here in town will collect hefty fees to be pay for their elaborate new facilities and their full-page Tulsa World ads and their Hollywood doctors.  $750 for 10 minutes with you.

College?  Now anyone with a kid in an institution of higher learning today will tell you that it's like buying a house.  We are talking well over $30,000 a year.

Healthcare and Education today in Oklahoma, feels like real estate in California five years ago.  It doesn't make any sense.  And it's destroying our quality of life.

Was it a co-pay plan or straight 20/80 for major medical only, did you have well-visits included in the plan?  I find there are a lot of people who don't quite understand how their deductible works on their health insurance and think it's worse than it really is.

$750??? For what procedure.  You aren't talking about an office visit are you?  Waaaaay off base.

As someone who is paying for a college education for a child at OU, that's incorrect.  You are off by about 100%.  Perhaps at TU or some other private school.

Hometown, you can get free healthcare, just show up at the ER without your wallet and pretend you don't speak English. You were a real sucker for buying that silly insurance.

There's even a plaque at St. Francis ED admitting that says they must treat everyone "regardless of ability to pay".  It's in Spanish too!

I only paid $20K/yr for my education at TU.  I must of had a coupon or something.

I took a winter break course at TU in Jan 1972 for $35/credit hr.  3 hr course, $105.
Starting salary for a mechanical engineer (friend, not me, I got drafted) in summer 1972 was about $11,000/yr.

The single best investment any state can make is in higher education; either college or trade school.  This has been well established for decades, and yet, we do everything we can to discourage people from going to college.

Here's a thought; for successful students (C or better) who graduate and stay in the state for minimum of 5 years after graduation, books and tuition are free.

Too bad there aren't enough jobs for that.
