I am curious as to what folks in this forum feel about Obama's pledge to repeal this controversial policy. I know the positions taken by both sides (mission disruption vs. ending discrimination). If you don't know, I was in the military (lol). Perhaps it is time to at least try ending this program and see what happens.
I believe that any American who is willing and able to serve in the military should be allowed to.
So long as it does not distract from the job at hand, and no one thinks they are entitled to preferential treatment based on their sexual orientation, I could care less.
In the words of the late great Barry Goldwater:
"You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight."
My feeling is that there are already a significant number of gays serving in the military. Repealing this silly policy will allow these same men & women to not have to lie about who they are, and to not have to fear for their careers.
I have no problems with ending DADT (disclosure: someone I know in my home state is a gay service member).
The arguments to keep the policy are hollow. Great Britain dropped its opposition to gay service members more than 15 years ago, and it was like nothing happened. I suspect that when the U.S. does it, it will be just as anticlimactic.

McCain apparently cannot make up his mind on this issue. I guess it depends on the (election) year, and who he's trying to pander to at the moment.

Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff:
"No matter how I look at the issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens."
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates: "I fully support the President's decision."
So now McCain, who had said back in 2006 that he would be "guided by military leaders", told Gates and Mullen that he was "disappointed" with the testimony. Overturning the law would "be a substantial and controversial change to a policy that has been successful for two decades," he said in his opening statement. "It would also present yet another challenge to our military at a time of already tremendous stress and strain... At this moment of immense hardship for our armed services, we should not be seeking to overturn the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy."
McCain's statements make it clear he hasn't budged. I guess McCain will be 'guided by military leaders' only when they do exactly what he wants. Typical.

Haven't you heard? Their marriage is for 'appearances' only. I figure he's so belligerant about DADT because his wife loves the gays and he hates his wife. Well, that and his pandering to the Mormon contingent in AZ.
