Title: Rahm Drops The "R" Bomb
Post by: Conan71 on February 02, 2010, 03:08:44 PM
Come on Governor er former Governor, lighten up:

Dating back to the time he worked in the Clinton administration, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has developed an almost notorious reputation in Washington for being a brash personality with a penchant for profanity-laced diatribes. Conversely, his intense nature, in addition to his sharp mind, are what many attribute to his success and effectiveness as a Washington power player. But a remark he made recently in a closed-door meeting attended by White House aides and leaders of liberal special-interest groups has irked many, prompting him to issue an apology.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Emanuel, exasperated upon learning that liberal special-interest groups were planning to run ads against conservative Democrats not supportive of health care reform, blasted the plan as "f------ retarded" over the summer. Naturally, some outrage ensued after Emanuel's words came to light, with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin taking to her Facebook page to call on President Obama to fire him for what she saw as the equivalent of a racial slur.

Palin, whose son Trig is afflicted with Down syndrome, said she was informed of Emanuel's comment by a fellow parent of a special-needs child and pleaded with the president to "show decency" to the political process by "eliminating" the Chicago native from his inner circle.

In a post titled "Are You Capable of Decency, Rahm Emanuel?," Palin wrote, "Just as we'd be appalled if any public figure of Rahm's stature ever used the 'N-word' or other such inappropriate language, Rahm's slur on all God's children with cognitive and developmental disabilities — and the people who love them — is unacceptable," adding, "it's heartbreaking."

In response to the outrage expressed by Palin and others, Politico reported today that an administration official informed them that Emanuel had already reached out to Special Olympics chairman and CEO Tim Shriver, who recently launched a campaign to end the use of "the R word."

"Rahm called Tim Shriver Wednesday to apologize and the apology was accepted," the unnamed official said.

It should be noted that Emanuel, who is rumored to have once mailed a dead fish to a former coworker he disliked, has not offered any apology to the liberals his slur was aimed at, and it's highly doubtful that he ever will.

So should we be expecting Sarah to call for the head of Mr Rush Limbaugh now that he is using the word every day giving the lame excuse that Mr Emanual used it?   Or is it okay if a conservative uses the word but not okay for a nonconservative to use it?

I think Governor Palin is acting like a total retard here.

The part of the original article cited that really seemed retarded to me was Tim Shriver calling it the "R word"

It's unfortunate Tim Huntzinger handed back his TNF membership card.  I used to love to heap all sorts of retard references his way.

Governor Palin has a "camp"?

Does she really think she's going to be relevant in the 2012 election?

What is she best known for? VP FAIL and quitting as the governor of one of the least populated states in the nation?

She's the retard here.

Who cares if she will be relevant in 2012, really. It's about now. From her little Facebook page she fundamentally changed the health care debate and made Mr. Badass apologize. Moreover, here is a list of her up-coming speaking engagements in front of people who apparently believe she is relevant:

February 5 - Salina, Kansas - Salina's Chamber of Commerce
February 6 - Nashville, TN - Keynote Speaker Tea Party Convention
February 7 - Houston, Texas - Campaign Rally for Governor Rick Perry,
February 14 - Daytona, FL - Daytona 500
February 15 - Daytona, FL - Daytona Chamber of Commerce
February 16 - Little Rock, AR - The Arkansas Republican Party
March 26 & 27 - Arizona - Campaigning for Senator John McCain
March 27 - Searchlight, Nevada - Kickoff for Tea Party Express
April 6 - Las Vegas, NV - Keynote speaker, 2010 Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America convention
April 7 - Minnesota - Campaigning for Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann
April 14 - Boston, Massachusetts - Stop on The Tea Party Express
April 15 - Hamilton, Ontario - Charity of Hope
April 22 - Houston, TX - Barbara Bush's Literacy Foundation's "A Celebration of Reading"
April 23 - Eugene, Oregon - Republican Fundraiser
May 2 - Wichita, Kansas - Bethel Life School fundraiser
May 13 - Benton Harbor, Michigan - Economic Club of Southeastern Michigan
October 7 - Montgomery, Alabama - Faulkner University Benefit Dinner

She looks pretty darn relevant to me. Please post your up-coming speaking schedule Conan to compare.  ;D

So people that like Palin's message are lemmings. Let's look at some of those "lemmings" she will be speaking to: Daytona Chamber of Commerce, Senator John McCain, Charity of Hope, Barbara Bush's Literacy Foundation's "A Celebration of Reading", Economic Club of Southeastern Michigan, and Faulkner University Benefit Dinner. Business and government leaders and university folks, yep, those folks are sure mindless followers.

I agree that calling everybody who likes Sarah Palin a lemming is stupid. She has many fans, especially among the pro-life crowd.

But, many of the groups that she speaks to have selected her and paid her all that money because she can draw a crowd and get sponsors to buy over-priced tables and photo with her.

It isn't because they believe in her, they just use each other.

What is up with your love affair with this woman? I really am curious. I don't personally know anyone who takes her seriously, even my die hard Okie conservative relatives.

I'm trying to not sound facetious by asking you this, as I am truly wanting to hear some solid reasons why anyone would support Palin.

It's not a "love affair". I support her because she is pro-life, has great views on energy policy, and is a huge supporter of our military. That's it. So, what is with your love affair with Obama?

I think she's hawt.  I can't compete with that Guido, that's why I have to pay $100 every time I want to speak in public and why my speaking engagement list is rather small these days.  ;)

She was a breath of fresh air in the 2008 election mainly because she was as much an outsider as you will ever find in a national election and I admired her spunk.  Her nomination for VP was as much an antithesis to an old dinosaur like Joe Biden as there could be.  As a VP, I think she could have done an admirable job attending to state functions, going to funerals, meeting with diplomats, and I think she could have had a pretty good PR role with the American Public.  I simply question her as a serious leader.

She's demonstrated herself since after the '08 election to be nothing special.  She's not a political scholar and has limited knowlege and experience with the political process.  She's simply well-rehearsed on the usual conservative talking points and she does, by all appearances, believe those views.  Not really one iota different than President Obama.  That's not real leadership, it's puppetry and great communication skills.  I like her and she's enjoyable to listen to, however, she's not saying anything new or anything that I couldn't pick up and spout off with three hours a day of Limpbaugh, Hannity, or Beck.

To be perfectly honest, where she finally lost my respect was quitting as the Governor of Alaska.  She's all about raking in the bucks and keeping her name out there for 2012.  She will be slaughtered in the primaries.

Support her as what? An ordinary citizen? OK, I'm fine with that.

But if you want her as a future political candidate, that ship's done sailed. Any credibility she may have had was shot when she quit in the middle of her term. She may run, but she won't win the nomination. All her opponents have to do is say she's a quitter, and that would be an unassailable criticism.

I do not care if she runs or not. I support her (her efforts at getting her message out there even though she does not hold office RW) for my stated reasons. Many folks on this forum just cannot stand the fact that she has massive amounts of influence and popularity yet holds no office. Point to me someone else in that position--even Rush will fall short.

Sort of like Paris Hilton?

I'd disagree that she's got more influence than Rush.  I think you underestimate how many conservatives were turned off when she quit.  Speaking to 100 to 2000 people at fund-raisers isn't much of a yard stick at indicating she's become more influential or popular than the paid pundits. She's not really selling anything different or more innovative than any of them are.

From everything I've seen of her, her command of policy is weak and she isn't much of a leader.  Aside from the fact that I disagree with her politics in general, she just doesn't pass muster as a serious presidential contender.  I can't picture her being in charge of the country and us getting a good result.

I sense a little hesitance on her part to fully and completely embrace the Tea Party. They like her charm and her folksiness and her populism but I think she knows that they're only one interest group under the GOP umbrella. IMO, she'll ride their support for $$ and influence through 2010 and and maybe into 2011 but will have to make a broader based pivot at some point to even have a chance at winning the GOP primaries.

I can't imagine what her strategy would be in a general election, and I think enough people have enough of a strong reaction against her that at best she'd win with a slim margin and more likely lose somewhat decisively.  Either way, get her in a televised debate with Obama (who really is best in a setting like that) and she'll come off quite poorly.

But hey.  We're two years away and anything can happen, right?

That's admirable, and she has sold many more books than I have.  I've not read her book and don't intend to.  I seldom buy books about people I've already learned quite a bit about through the short-attention span media.  I do enjoy reading Ann Coulter because she's irreverant and unapologetic.

Rush's two books have sold over 9 million in hard and paper back.  She's got a ways to go to eclipse that.  I'm also curious if that number includes copies purchased for promotions?  Newsmax and Townhall magazines will give you a free or low cost copy of the book with a year's subscription to their magazine.  He's also got a daily radio audience in the range of 10 to 20 million listeners.

Once she's sold 9+ million books and has a daily radio or TV audience greater than is claimed by Limbaugh, I'll agree with you that she's got more of a following than Rush.

Nothing personal, I simply don't see any great leadership skills in her and I don't find her terribly compelling.

did was immoral. My stuff is cutting edge. Their stuff is censorship. Shameful.

FOTD, where did you get the kitty with the gun?  I have to send it to a friend.

More than ten seconds, which is enough time to list at least ONE. Buddy! Quickly, run over to dailykos or DU and get your ammo.

Here are a few:
She's anti-choice.
She's anti-gay.
She thinks the Alaska oilfields are the answer for all our energy problems and that the oil will last forever.

And it's quite offensive for you to accuse me of getting my politics from DK or DU.   Do you get your politics from stormfront.org?

Palin calls a press conference and says that Obama should fire his aide for using the word retard.

Rush Limbaugh says the word over and over this week and she doesn't say a word about it or to him.

I guess it is OK for republicans to say it.

Actually, Palin's spokeswoman said: "Governor Palin believes crude and demeaning name-calling at the expense of others is disrespectful" in response when a reporter asked her about Rush's multiple use of "retarded."

So, although she didn't single out Limbaugh by name, it's apparent that she wasn't happy about it.

But she demanded that Emanuel be terminated.

And then her spokesperson came out and said that statement about crude and demeaning behavior was not aimed at Rush....

Talk about your double standards.

I hope Palin stays in the spotlight for a while. She's hilarious.

I have to agree, execution seems a bit excessive.

Republicans are a minority.  It (seems like it) has always been acceptable for a minority to use derogatory terms within its own group.

Gotta love those minority rights.   ;D

Well I guess I am an idiot to because I am pro-life and in favor of drilling in Alaska. That would be quite offensive to me if I had thin skin.

And this is what she said on her Sunday interview with Chris Wallace  http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/1467962.html (http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/AP/story/1467962.html)  I find it interesting that she called for a cease and desist to name calling right after calling a bunch of people "kooks".   Apparently she does not practice what she preaches.

QuoteOn another issue, Palin offered two different reactions to two high profile public figures who last week called people retarded or retards.

The mother of a child with Down Syndrome, Palin joined others last week in criticizing White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel for calling liberals "retarded" in a closed door meeting. She called it a slur and demanded he be fired.

On Sunday, she said his apology was not enough to make up for his slur or his own performance as chief of staff.

"I think he should step down," she said.

She also told Foxnews.com in a separate interview posted Sunday that Emanuel's use of words were demeaning.

"He didn't just use the r-word applying it to a plan, he called opponents of a plan 'f'ing' retards. That's demeaning, degrading, it's beneath the dignity of the White House.

That alone should I think make the president ask for that do-over with his chief of staff," she said.

She said, however, it was different when conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh ridiculed the idea it was offensive to call people retarded.

"Our politically correct society is acting like some giant insult's taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards 'retards,"" Limbaugh said, also calling liberals "kooks."

"He was hysterical in that," Palin said Sunday. "They are kooks, so I agree with Rush Limbaugh. Rush Limbaugh was using satire."

She added, "name-calling by anyone - it's just unnecessary. It just wastes time. Let's speak to the issues and, again, let's move on."

Best quote on that:

"You attack me on Facebook?  What are you, fourteen?"

Great stuff.

I thought the rest of the quote was even better:

"Poke me again, and I will write s--t on your wall so obsene your computer will cry. Go back to the tundra, you f--king gimmick!"

And I thought him referring to the ConservaDems who outed him on WSJ as 'turncoats' was pretty funny.  Hell, the whole thing was pretty funny, actually.  Samberg cracks me up.  His little SNL shorts (D*cK in Box, Lazy Sunday, etc) are usually enough to garner a chuckle out of me.
