Title: The icepocalypse is coming...
Post by: sgrizzle on January 26, 2010, 02:01:32 PM
National weather service is predicting power outages for 1-2 days, worse to the south. Ice accumulating on standing objects up to half an inch in Tulsa.

They always err on the side of panic, Scott, especially after the 2007 behemoth.  Not saying that it won't happen, but there have been times where gloom and doom have been forecast and it just doesn't come to pass.

Be prepared though.  I always am.  Generator at the ready.

Also, if you go by what the latest WSW (Winter Storm Watch) terminology is saying .1 to .25 inches of ice accumulation; which puts the SPIA back at 1, which means sporadic outages.  I was a former spotter a long time ago and current meteo geek, so I've been following the models as much as possible and trying to decipher what the Tulsa WFO is saying about they're predictions.  Their latest one should come out around 3:30 pm.

Stormgasm.

I get tired of the hype, but that's kind of the point in having advanced weather modeling capabilities.

I need to go buy a jerry can or two of gas and test fire the old genny, just in case.  Fortunately a lot of weak limbs were knocked out of my trees and those of my neighbors during the '07 storm, it would appear.  As well, I had my trees trimmed last summer and my neighbor with the huge American elm next door had his trimmed and the last of the '07 debris pulled out of it a couple of months ago.

For those of you with electric cook tops: it might not be a bad idea to lay in some charcoal and fluid or propane bottles so you can use your outdoor grill to cook on for a few days, if necessary.

Luckily for me I have a gas stove (albeit with an electric ignition but that can be gotten around with matches).  I did most of my major shopping last night; I'll likely buy a few things after the hockey game tonight.  I should stock up on Big Jamoke.

I'm hoping the system keeps a little farther to the south. More snow, less freezing rain and sleet. Of course, that means nearly a foot of snow. :p

The NAM has been calling for nearly two feet of snow for a week now. I don't see that happening. The GFS has been at closer to a foot for some time now. The run-to-run consistency shown by a lot of the models is very high and has been for a week, so it's unlikely we'll see an all rain event unless the low tracks a lot farther north than the models have been forecasting.

My project for the day is getting my kerosene heater working again. Wick replacement is fun.  :-[

So when should TPS start closing the Schools ?

Why by Gawd back in my Dads day, he walked to School in a foot of snow carrying his Sister over Ten Miles barefoot.

The problem with these forecasts is that they can generate these very precise and intricate maps (such as a heavy swath of 0.75" ice from Okmulgee to Muskogee) but can't get the overall storm within 50 to 100 miles.  So, there will likely be a heavy band SOMEWHERE, but it could be in Bartlesville or Mcalester.   They also have numerous different models that give wildly varying data.  In the end, it usually comes down to a metereologist picking which one he/she "feels" like going with to present to the public.

3 feet, seriously, why would he even say that on the airwaves?

Ah, the beauty of a global eco-system.  The jetstream slowing down just 1 knot less than expected can throw that off 70 miles.  That's why most of their messages include something about the forecasts being modified before arrival.

Oh wonderful. If the model trends keep up with tracking the system more northward, we'll be in for some serious ice. Thankfully here in Tulsa it'll probably be more sleet than freezing rain, which will limit accumulations on power lines and trees at least.

I'm hoping for the warm layer to go away and keep it all snow. I'd prefer to have power this weekend.

What happens, happens.  I am worried that Tulsa will not have enough salt/sand to treat roadways.  We don't even have enough money to keep our policemen and firemen on the payroll.  It is everyman for himself.

Now the NWS is forecasting more ice for us in the Metro...on the order of about 7/8 of an inch, which puts us in the SPIA index of 4.  For those of you not familiar, here's a graphic:

I was just at the hardware store...which was a zoo.  Everyone was picking up ice melt, shovels, etc.  I saw a lot of folks buying propane (we still have some left from our 10 days without power a couple years ago, so I'm not too worried about that).

It reminded me that Just Camp (the new camping store downtown...around 12th and Frankfort) carries a lot of Coleman products.  Stoves, heaters, accessories, etc.  I think they had fuel, too, but I'm not totally sure.  In any case, this might be a great resource for anyone who wants to pick up a few "survival essentials," since the big boys are going to sell out pretty quickly over at Lowe's and Home Depot.

I hate it when the forecast shifts this much. I wanted a foot of snow!

The day shift guys at NWS Tulsa have been pushing the ice storm situation for days, while the night shift guys seemed to think it would be more snow. The models are looking more icy now, though, so maybe it'll hold, although they've gone from good general agreement to all over the freaking place. The GFS still wants to put us under 8 inches of snow.

I need to get more kerosene...

Nathan, only place I can think of would be HD or Lowe's.  Maybe Academy Sports?

I just fired my generator for the first time since Dec. '07.  It took some coaxing, but it's running like a champ.

Not bad, I'm at the office.  The side streets in my 'hood were coated, but it's sleet, so decent traction.  I-44 is 55 MPH except over the Ark River bridge.  I'm hoping to leave for OKC later this afternoon, waiting to see what the roads are like on the other end.

My office knocked off for the day ... can't say that it was a bad decision. I swear that it took my neighbor 30 minutes to knock all the ice off his windshield this morning.

Got a fire going in the wood stove and the power's still on, so I can't complain.

I finally caught on to letting the car warm up for 15 minutes to assist with the de-icing problem.  Nothing worse than chipping and hacking that and I'm really appreciating having a carport this winter!  I haven't had a garage I could park in since 2003.

I was slightly worried about my river birch last night. I could hear ice crackling in it when I took my trash to the curb.  I think we dodged the bullet.  I noticed none of my neighbors put theirs out.  They did pick up this morning.  Now with the snow coming down the only concern I have is visibility as far as getting on the road.

On Thursday, PSO officials said 1,000 people were being dispatched to Oklahoma from Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana.  Hundreds of utility crews were staged Wednesday and Thursday at the Tulsa County Fairgrounds in anticipation of a major ice storm hitting eastern Oklahoma.

So are we going to have to pay another "rate adjustment" to cover all the out-of-state repair crews like we did two years ago?
When you figure that in, the cost of spoiled food and business closures, it really is more expensive to have overhead electric lines than buried ones.

I believe those were other AEP crews and "Shared Assistance" company crews. There is some expense for food and hotels, but not like in 2007 when they had to bring in hourly contractors.

I know that are very well. In late '83 I worked at the old Vickers gas station just south of Sheridan and lived in the Copper Mill apartments just past the top of the hill back when it was two lane. Had to try several times one night to climb the hill in a Triumph TR6 in the snow, spent most of it going sideways up the hill. The right rear always wanted to try and pass the right front. The worst part was if I lost momentum and started the slide back down the hill, with the angle the car was in I would turn left to get the car to at least face the right direction to go back down.

Dback, were you around when the guy got shot and killed?

Um which guy? Roger Wheeler? Shot and killed at Southern Hills CC in the parking lot? The guy that held people hostage in the what was McCartney's at 71st and Sheridan? Just some background, I was born in Tulsa at St. Francis in 1963 and lived in Tulsa until May of 1998, so my memory of things covers a long range of time. I can still remember when the Kiaser Magnesium plant on 41st near the RR tracks exploded in the 60's, and my parents wher living in Tulsa when a B-47 bomber exploded in mid-air near 71st and Memorial in '57 and the debris rained down on the square mile that is 21st to 31st, and Memorial to Sheridan. I graduated from Nathan Hale in 1981, and my brothers graduated from Hale in "70, '71' and '73.

You probably remember Sheridan northbound towards 61st by the water tank before they cut the hill way down.  It's the only hill my brother and I couldn't get over in his 77 Saab.  Going northbound, there were no guardrails and there was a nasty drop on the east side.  We started sliding backwards so my brother switched ends (really slick maneuver with front wheel drive) and we went south.  Probably just as well. I doubt we could have stopped at the bottom of the hill at 61st.

For those of you who haven't done front wheel drive donuts:

On a slick surface with lots of room
Turn off traction control
Turn the steering wheel to the lock, either direction
Put the tranny in reverse
Give it lots of gas to break loose.
Go along for the ride.
Enjoy

Yes I remember that area back then. Guard Rails? There weren't any back then since all the roads in that area were two lane. When the Memorial day flood in 1984, I tried to go and help my parents who lived on the west side of the Ma-Hu mansion and I could not get away from the 71st and Yale area because of the flood waters. I woke up at about 2am to the sound of a fire truvk going by, and turned on the radio to here KMOD saying that boats and jacked up 4X4's were needed in the area of 31st&Mingo to rescue people.

Only in Oklahoma would someone issue a distress call requesting monster trucks.

Not to get more off topic, but, WOW!
Are there any photos of the incident available, preferably on-line?

I'm looking, but here's an alleged first-hand account of living in the vicinity.  This is a great website as well for old Tulsa stuff.

The only place I have ever found any pics was at the downtown libray where they had old World and Tribune issues on microfilm in the periodicals area.

I see I was off by a year 58 instead of 57, but did not know that the last two digits of the tail number were the same as the day of the month, March 13th and 50-013.
