Italian food for the distinguishing taste is coming to the Brady District, the proprietor is related to an established Brady business owner is not a newcomer to the downtown restaurant scene.

"Hey Mambo" sorta screams Cuban.
Odd name for an Italian joint.

I wondered about the name too, but I found this:
I like how the front is open. I hope thats the front anyway lol.
I and some friends ate at Cazs Chowhouse the other evening. As we were driving away one friend mentioned how dark and "scary" the streets in that area looked. There are plenty of businesses along Brady and the street going down to the Cains, but when most of them arent open in the evenings and they have no lights on, it can look quite foreboding to some.
Now, I dont think the solution is a bunch of stark, acorn lights.
We then drove through Cherry Street and Brookside.... What I noticed and pointed out was all the ambient lighting from the businesses. It wasnt "bright" per say, but was still filled with a warm and cozy light. Business signs that were lit up, uplighting and downlighting on the businesses, some had strings of lights along the top, and what I really liked were the large windows that you could see into.
Along Cherry Street, even the businesses that werent open like the antique stores had lights on inside and lit up window displays. Made you slow down and you could see it made the street so much more enjoyable to walk down and just be in the area in general. Similarly when you drive down Brookside at night, more and more the businesses have glass fronts and are lit up inside, whether open at night or not, it makes for a wonderful street experience. Feels, lively, safe and enjoyable. It has the effect of making the street feel much more alive than it actually may be. Throw in even just a few people walking, and then being able to see some inside the restaurants and, wow, you want to be there. Contrast that with the darkness and not being able to see inside most of whats in the Blue Dome or Brady, and the places that arent open not having their windows lit up... and its quite a contrast.
I would hope that places in the Blue Dome and Brady Arts would take a cue from that. Too many businesses that are "closed off" from the streets, too much darkness and or stark lighting and (rightly or wrongly) it turns a lot of people off. It looks unappealing, and empty even if its not.
One of the things that I have thought would greatly improve the Brady Arts area would be to either string lights along the tops of the buildings, or have them criss cross over the streets.
Where is this exactly on N. Boulder, near the Brady Theater? Looks like a cool concept but surprised they are not going in closer to the ballpark or where more of the Brady District businesses are clustered around Main & Brady.
The design firm's office on 11th is also really cool:
http://www.teperahood.com/work/teperahood-design-office/3750451 (http://www.teperahood.com/work/teperahood-design-office/3750451)
The architect posts on here occasionally and is the President of the Lortondale HOA, Shane Hood. I didn't catch who the designer was at first but picked up on the Mid-Century Modern to Modern Contemporary influence.
I'm not usually a nay-sayer, but I think it might be a mistake putting this on Boulder. It's sort of like having your back turned on the rest of the district since most activity other than the Brady Theater is east of Boulder. I've always felt pretty safe walking anywhere in the Brady District, but without a whole lot of other activity at night and being a block closer to the jail and Starvation Army, I think people might be a little more reluctant to walk around on Boulder except with a throng of Brady show-goers. I hope I'm totally wrong on this assertion.
It's N Boston, not N Boulder

South of Club Majestic (around the corner from Caz's Chowhouse)
Whew! I like that one a whole lot better. I kept trying to picture where you would put this on Boulder.

Same here, the building just south of the Majestic is a good location. I'm all for new development all over Brady but think they should concentrate on the east end first before heading west towards Boulder and Cheyenne.
BTW the Living Arts Center will be across the street

Thread title adjusted.
There are renderings in the window of the building soon to be Hey Mambo, around the corner from Majestic kind of on the edge of the Brady District and Parking Lot Acres North.
Thank you for the little buzz about Hey Mambo. Hope to be open in the spring!
thanks for noticing guys
a couple of disclaimers...while I have a degree in architecture, I am still working towards my architecture license and by law cannot refer to myself as an architect. Instead I refer to myself as a designer, which I much prefer anyways.
While I co-founded the Lortondale Neighborhood association and acted as its president for almost 4 years, I am currently not the president of the neighborhood association, but the at-large officer.
Will, the front of the restaurant currently is two large storefronts, we are going to keep them this way for the reasons you mentioned. It is important to me and the owner that there is a sense of transparency at the front of the restaurant so that everything is on display. Imagine going north on Boston at twilight the night of a ballgame and looking into the large storefronts of Hey Mambo and seeing the place packed with people....there is no better signage or advertising than that.

Whoops a miss and a miss on my part. "At-large" or just a big guy? ;)

Go for the license. Do you have the experience etc and just need to take the test(s)?

I'm in the same boat with the architecture degree but no license; started the NCARB record when I was working in design then switched to construction and stopped and now may be going back to design with the goal of (one day) being licensed.
I walked by the storefront last weekend and it will be very visible from the street. I really hope they can get the funding together for the Matthews Warehouse/Living Arts Center across the street. That and the restaurant will really liven up that area of Brady.
yes i have the experience, i am in the process of taking tests...
Now open. Looking forward to trying their pizza. The outdoor patio area looks very inviting, too.
I was there Thursday for the preview and enjoyed it. Lots of energy, decent food, lively crowd. I will definitely be going back
Yes we are now open for business! Open for lunch Monday threw Friday 11-2, Dinner Monday threw Saturday 5-10 and later on the weekend. Hope to see you all real soon!

Had dinner and drinks. The wife and I enjoyed it very much. We've already scheduled dinner plans later in the week with family.
We got some great inside scoop about more development in the area too.

It was limited information and I'm not trying to be coy but the parking lot to the South of the restaurant is going bye bye. (Not the new hotel)

and my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard.
Honestly though, we got a tidbit of information before Scott realized his outside lights and sign weren't on. (cool backlighting btw)
Underground parking was mentioned.
The name keeps me thinking of this place as somewhere to get a Cubano. And there's a wine already out they can call their house wine. ;) FMC and I will have to try this next time she's in town.

Just for the tenants above it...huzzah.
Threw several holiday parties in this quirky space about 6-7 years ago, I would always dream of it being occupied by more than storage. I'm excited to go by and see how it has transformed. The rear of the space/building went all the way to Caz's alley, I'm curious how much of it was used for the restaurant. The biggest issue we had was dealing with a singular, poorly repaired restroom, we imported a couple port-a-john's to deal with that issue although the rear was not heated and dismally cold.
Went with a group Friday night and was impressed. Even though opened only one week, there was a pretty good crowd - the patio was full and the inside dinning area was probably 2/3 full. I got there after 8 so the Smashing Pumpkins crowd had already left.
Overall I thought the food was good and the menu has some interesting offerings. I wish the wine list was a little most expansive (especially Itallian wines) and better organized, but it has some decent selections and reasonable prices. Everyone in my group had a good experience and will definitely go back.
