Title: Eat dirt cheap
Post by: sgrizzle on January 04, 2010, 10:27:26 AM
While I like eating at local restaurants, I also like eating cheap. Thought I'd throw out a few deals, see who knows of others.

Burger King:
In the fast food burger joint $1 menu war, they won. Spicy Chicken sandwiches and double cheeseburgers that taste like they use actualy beef headline the menu.

Sonic:
A noteable second in said war, $1 chili cheese wraps and in a land where chicken fingers keep getting more expensive, they put them on a sandwich for $1

KFC:
$1.99 Chicken Fried Steak Dinners every monday. Pretty hard to beat that price.

Joe Momma's:
$5 one topping pizzas Tuesday Nights 5-10pm and half price appetizers 4-6pm on weekdays. In other words, go on Tuesday between 5 and 6.

Taco Bueno:
"Value Combo" is Two tacos, a burrito and a 32oz drink for $2.99 every day
$2.99 platters featuring two entree items, rice and beans lso $2.99 during January

Whataburger:
99c Breakfast Taquitos (current special)

Quiktrip:
2 hot dogs or roller grill items $2. Get free food for doing surveys at qtwebgroup.com

Taco Bell:
Their low-fat "Fresco Menu" is fairly cheap, and yo can get a free taco coupon at drivethrudiet.com

Elote:
$2 puffy taco nights on wednesday

El Guapo:
$1 taco nights on Monday, $6 wet burritos on Tuesday night (can feed two people)

McNellies:
$3 Burger Night on Wednesday.. try to beat the crowd.

Brewburger:
$10 for 2 cheeseburger baskets on Wednesday

Any other deals worth sharing?

There are quite a few on TulsaRestaurantDeals.com but I have trouble navigting between real deals and "entree of the day" type listings.

Most all dollar menus are a dollar for a reason: Garbage in, garbage out.  Really trying to watch my crap food intake these days.

I really like the happy hour (2pm till 4pm) drink prices at Sonic. I can get any size (even 44 ounce) diet cranberry diet limeade slushes for under a dollar.

Arby's now has a dollar menu and Wendy's has choices like chili or a baked potato for a dollar.

I think the Whataburger taquitos are terrible. The eggs taste like the made them the day before.

I get this a lot and put the chili ON the baked potato. Yum!

The half-price apps at Joe Momma's are also from 10pm-midnight. With that and the $1 High Life, I feel like I'm stealing from Blake. Dinner of a couple appetizers and a few drinks for less than $15 total for two people.

And kudos to Blake for being committed to being open past 10pm. It was only a little over a year ago you couldn't get dinner downtown after 10pm.

Lately I have been going to some of the radio station websites and they have half price deals for restaurants.  You have to read the info before you buy because some do not include alcohol or have a quick expiration date.  Sometimes you have to act fast or they sell out like the time they had McNellies gift cards 2 for 1.

Here is one of the sites but I know there are more out there:   http://kmyz.theedgedeals.com/

I also found that following your favorite restaurants on Facebook or Twitter sometimes pays off with discounts.  Also, I joined Quiznos and Arby's e-mail list and they e-mail me some good coupons.

These periodically come in handy:

http://www.restaurant.com/index.asp?pgn=home (http://www.restaurant.com/index.asp?pgn=home)

They tend to be stronger sites in the summer.

There are new ones added weekly or so by my experience.

I opened this thread expecting some new information on the Southern Practice of Eating Dirt.

http://www.nytimes.com/1984/02/13/us/southern-practice-of-eating-dirt-shows-signs-of-waning.html

"For generations, the eating of clay-rich dirt has been a curious but persistent custom in some rural areas of Mississippi and other Southern states, practiced over the years by poor whites and blacks."

Given the huge number of Poor Whites in Oklahoma, our people have probably been known to gobble some of that local red stuff.

Can't beat the price.

The title of the thread reminds me of "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves."  The first time I read it, I read: "Eat dirt, cheap!"

(People who are anemic have been known to eat dirt...presumably craving iron and other minerals.)

As far as budget-friendly eating establishments, you can't overlook Steakfinger House downtown.  The deluxe burger basket still comes in under $5.

I agree with a previous sentiment, with one change:

Garbage in, garbage out, but some of the garbage sticks around.

Several of us did.  That will teach us not to sprinkle commas where they don't belong.

One I didn't see here are the $5 pizzas every Wednesday at Leons in Brookside. Very tasty crispy thin crust. Great little sports bar to boot...and kid-enough friendly.

Wow, this thread has "Tulsa" written all over it. Cheap people abound here.

You guys want to eat cheap? Buy a bunch of Ramen noodles.

Or as Dave Ramsey would say, "Beans and Rice, Rice and Beans."

:P

Hawkins must be rich. Not all of us can lunch at the Polo Grill each day.

Hawkins, Something has happened to you.  Ever since your haircut you've been looking downright handsome.  Anyway, you've touched on something important.  Cheapness.  Not enough money in circulation.  A handful of zillionaires, a paltry middle-class and a huge working class.  People chasing after shrinking slices of a shrinking pie.  It reminds of me of the descriptions of the dying towns of Kansas in the "Trouble with Kansas."  And yet, if you broach the subject here come the cheerleaders who are fighting mad because you pointed out an uncomfortable truth about Tulsa.  The company town that lost the company.  No mon, no fun.  Biscuits and gravy.  Glory, Republican style.

Now, I am just curious.  I knew some people in group that called themselves Circle.  Wonder what they are doing now?

Should have come from Gaspar....

You can go to PURE and eat raw and find out that your body needs less food to consume the purer form it takes. It will cost. So does anything prepared with TLC and quality products. People eat according to their clocks and not according to their waste lines.

I used to belong to a teenage group that called itself the Circle.  It was styled on a novel named Stranger in a Strange Land.  We did things like volunteer work for Neighbor for Neighbor.  And sometimes we hung out with the White Panthers.  We were known to spend hours sitting in a booth at Michael's Alley talking, drinking ice tea and eating sliced dill pickles because they were cheap.  But that was a million years ago when life was full of promise and our lives stretched before us as far as the eye could see.

I remember driving that old panel van that Rev. Dan Allen had.  Lousy shape, but it sure hauled a lot of bread.
