Title: TPD = Big Babies
Post by: Mike 01Hawk on November 05, 2009, 08:10:52 AM
Good lord, SHUT UP ALREADY, and KRMG.. STOP COVERING IT.

I'm sick and f'n TIRED of hearing about this.  I don't care about the politics one bit, all I hear is "wah wah wah."

Here TPD, have a cluepon.... we're in a recession, jobs are going to be LOST.  Hell, I've lost count of how many layoffs I've faced... if I had to take a guess I'd say it'd be over 20+.

Life sucks, wear a helmet.

Good thing you live in BA.  Never know you might get a knock on your door and some thug saying: "Sure hope you never get broken into..."   ;)

There were the stories last week about the mounted patrol horses possibly becoming Mexican taco meat, and last night the stories about how the absence of helicopter patrols will mean burglars might break through your roof (http://http://www.fox23.com/news/local/story/TPD-Chief-Warns-Of-Rooftop-Burglars/rr5aZtwmRki066rLCHtKYA.cspx).

When did we ever have "helicopter patrols" that just stayed in the air all the time cruising the city?
...and how much would that have cost if we did?   Jet-A aint cheap.

With their latest PR campaign they have switched from negotiations to propaganda, vowing to make "no more concessions"

What if Public Works or EMSA pulled a stunt like this?

They need to change the logo to "Tulsa 3".  There was a photo in the paper yesterday of 18 officers getting their equipment back on Tuesday.

I read they never missed a day of work, and the other 3 have been working security contracts.

It seems the latest behavior of the FOP and the Firefighters has convinced most Tulsans I speak with that those groups of people are looking out for themselves exclusively.  Which is fine, they have a right to do so.  But certainly the illusion that altruistic heroes were patrolling our city has gone by the wayside.

I hope negotiations in the future center around that point.  Treat them just like any other city department or group who has a union who's primary responsibility to is to get as much as possible for their members.  In the worst economic downturn of ~30 years the force is being cut by about 1/3rd of 1%, while all other members keep their wages and benefits.  Then they act like some great injustice as occurred.

Police (and fire) are very important to any community . . . but the way this was handled has created some animosity among the large number of Tulsans.  My sympathies to anyone who loses their job - but when your union refuses to take any cuts to save your job the outcome is inevitable:

QuoteBrad Blackwell, a laid-off Tulsa police officer who has not been rehired, says the union is being supportive. The union president says they're still working on ways to get Blackwell and the other two officers back on the streets.

Money required to retain 3 officers:  ~$300,000.  Solutions:  $300 ($15 per officer per month, or 0.5% of average pay) paycut for all TPD or give up take home vehicles out of Tulsa.  Response: lay them off.

Disappointing.

Hey, I'm doing my part.  Just got a $15 parking ticket.  Anything to help the city!

And I agree.  Whiney, whiney, whiney.

I've always thought that people who become cops are the guys who received lots of snuggies in Jr. High.  (Or they got "flushed" in the locker room toilets.)  They go on to become cops, or high school referees, or intolerable middle managers...

But then, when you need a cop, you need a cop.  (Unfortunately, they're always showing up when I don't need them...like when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere...)

I love firefighters.  You only see them when you desperately need them.  They show up fast, they're helpful, they're kind, they're competant, they're life-savers, and generally good looking.

Just keep the politics out of it.  It's unbecoming.

"Response: lay them off." will get a lot more press than each officer taking a $15/mo pay cut.  With the proper spin, it makes the city (or any employer) look like the bad guy.  It's all a calculated risk in PR.
