I'm doing both. Well, neither. It simply isn't that important to me, it's really for the kids IMHO.
However, the old mascot was SO awful that it was a point of pride to embrace it. The snow cone, the yellow shower, the bugle, the bee hive. It consistently made it near the top of the list for worst mascots (the Stanford tree always wins). This new one isn't good enough to be noteworthy in any way. So I'd actually prefer fantastically bad.
First two google results for worst college mascots. Old Captain Cane came in at #2 on both. Losing to that damn tree.

FWIW, no, I had nothing to do with the back-story on Capt. Cane, even though there's a name similarity.
