Looks like the building permit is for 309 E. Second St. Looks like it will be next to the Blue Dome Diner.
Sounds like an interesting new venture. I love Asian food and noodles so I am really jazzed about it. I want an invite to the 'soft opening'! ;D
I did a search here and couldn't find anything, my apologies if this is a repost.

It had been rumored that he was going to put something Asian in the old Tsunami spot....
Tsunami's address: 309 E. Second St
Sweet. I look forward to a decent asian eatery downtown that's open late-ish (that crappy "buffet" on 4th and the stale Fortune Chef food don't count).
Last I heard, it was going to be an Asian noodle place.
And, according to Cannon Fodder (aka The Rain Man of Obscure Trivia), Yokozuna is the highest rank in sumo wrestling.
I hope this means that we get to throw salt over our shoulders before every meal...which would be fun until..."MY EYE! That guy threw salt in my eye!"
(At which point, everyone strips down to their diapers and begins body slamming each other in the middle of the restaurant...)
Now that's what I call a unique dining experience!

I'll have a little bit of whatever you're smoking. :P
Yokozuna?
Didn't she break up the Beatles?
I'm excited for this!
I hate to cite Wikipedia, but it's the only non-Google Translate page that explains it to any degree:
QuoteYokozuna (横綱, yokozuna [won't display unless you have the Japenese language pack installed] is the highest rank in sumo. The name literally means "horizontal rope" and comes from the most visible symbol of their rank, the rope (tsuna) worn around the waist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makuuchi#Yokozuna
Sometimes there are none but other times there has been as many as four. It's not just winning that gets you the title either. You basically have to win two majors in a row to be considered, have enough power, grace and dignity. No real criteria, it is more like being bestowed with a title.
The only non-Japenese to get the title was an American (Hawaiian). 6' 8", 500lbs. Actually played BBall for Hawaii Pacific. The top level (only 42 competitors at a time make it in the top level) make nearly $200,000 a year in league sponsored salary, plus bonuses, endorsements, prize money and everything else a celebrity can make. One has to imagine a Yokozuna makes multiples more than the base salary.

Sumos kinda fun to watch when it's on TV from time to time. The ceremony aspect of it slows it down too much for my manic American self (here we are now, entertain us!). And no, I have no idea how I knew that or any of the other crap jammed in my head. I must have seen some late night special.
"dignity"?

Careful. I LOVE Fortune Chef! Wish I lived/worked closer so I could enjoy it more.

Maybe it's passable at lunch/dinner time. But I always end up going in there mid afternoon, not a soul in the place, and all the bins are full of old food. Either they made 10 pounds of food for two customers or they just let the food sit there all day.
I saw a truck from Smalley Equipment Supply unloading kitchen-y items in front of Dwelling Spaces on Thursday! Definitely looking forward to a Tsunami replacement. I
Anybody have word when this place will officially be open?

Elliott Nelson is at it again.
The high-energy owner of McNellie's PUblic House, Dilly Deli, El Guapo's Mexican Cantina and who know what all is wrapping up work on a new restaurant at Second Street and Detroit Avenue.
It is called Yokozuna. Nelson says the name refers to sumo wrestlers who have achieved the sport's highest rank.
Nelson said that the restaurant will offer a variety of Pacific Rim cuisine, including lo mein, pad Thai and steamed dumplings.
He's hoping to open the restaurant by the end of September, if permits, licenses, etc., can get approved in time.
I'm glad to see another Asian place in that location. Elliott Nelson is definitely on a roll.
I poked my head in the building about a week ago. The chef was there and they said they hope to open "by the end of this month." (So, does this mean, this week?) They were moving tables around, while carpenters were doing finish work. The atmosphere is going to be cool, with some nice modern/Asian decorative touches. I especially like the (bamboo?) slats on the east wall. The bar (in about the same location as Tsunami's bar) is made from a huge slab of a single tree. (Shipped in from Brazil, I think they said. Very cool, but I'm trying not to think about deforestation of the Amazon rainforest....)
Regardless, I can't wait for it to open. Go Elliott!
I hope the service is better than it was when it was Tsunami and better than El Guapo's is now.
I drove by this morning and a new door along with signage has gone up.
The wife and I are going to a tasting on Thursday. I'm not a big Asian fan, but she's dragging me nonetheless. They sent our 100 invites for tastings on Thursday and Friday and my wife secured us a spot. Hopefully, I'm able to offer constructive feedback.
We have invites for the Friday night tasting. Looking forward to it!
Open yet? Wanting to try it out this weekend!
Yes, it's open now
It's open until midnight on Friday and Saturday! Sweet! With Yokozuna and Joe Momma's, we now we have two places open late downtown to eat.

Don't forget Hunt Club as well.

Meh. They have a (limited) late-night menu. I'm not counting that. I'm talking full menus at night, like real cities have.
had lunch at Yokozuna today and it was really good! great vibe in there.

do they have a dedicated lunch menu? I was there for the trial so I don't know what the final menu looks like.

yes, very reasonably priced too!
I hope it does well but I'm not holding my breath...every time I walk by it after work, it's empty. :(
It's actually been pretty busy both times I've been there (prior to a Monday night show at the PAC; and 9:00 PM on a Wed night for drinks and appetizers after an evening meeting).

drove by last thursday around 8pm, place was packed! i have been a few times now and am more impressed each time i go.
I've heard that they've worked out some of the kinks with the recipes, so I'll have to give it another try. Last time I was in (about a month ago), I found the food to be a bit bland.

I heard that too, and pricey.
Good to hear they are doing a decent business, I was getting worried. I will try this place soon.
It always seems to be doing decent business when I've been by lately. Even late nights after 10pm.
I don't think Tsunami was suffering from a lack of business. They were suffering from a lack of good cash management. Even with their crappy service, they still packed them in. Yokozuna should fare quite well, so long as the food and service are good. Only thing I worry about is Elliot getting over-extended on all these ventures or McNellie's having to carry a couple of others which aren't doing so well.
I agree that their food has improved dramatically since the "soft opening."
Did anyone else see the article about "wine on tap" at Yokozuna?

(I like the photo of Elliott looking like Wolverine from the X-Men...)
they have a new lunch special too, mon-fri $6.95 get's you a noodle bowl & soft drink.
I sampled a salmon dish and some kind of mango salad with chicken the other night, it was very good. That lunch special is tempting...
