They was told today at 10:00 am that Blue Cross Blue Shield in Tulsa would be cutting 200 plus jobs. Bad news for Tulsa.
hmm that seems odd since they just remodeled the old walmart at 43rd and Memorial into office space. A co workers wife works for them, I will ask him and see if he knows anything. If the news is true, thats disappointing.
Tulsa - 200 jobs:

That sucks.
On my way downtown today I was looking at the BlueCross buildings when some talking head was ranting about ObamaCare. I couldn't help but think what happens to private sector insurance jobs when there are government sector insurance jobs? Not saying this is a direct result, because it is not, but surely government health care will add people to the government doll and eliminate more private jobs (I don't intend to start a thread hijack, but that's what I was thinking).
Sheesh, TulsaMini still works there, I think. Just saw her and her DH last night.
Sorry. Single payer is the only solution.
Can we see how many here are on medicare?
How many here use Blue Cross?
How many read the article?
Or the statement from BCBS?

Shutting down??? Sounds like a total mis-read, Roscoe. Restructuring and shifting 200 jobs. Still jobs leaving the city, but nowhere in the company statement or news article, nor what I heard on KRMG does it say they are shutting down.
I used to work there and knew everyone there 5 years ago. I am sure I know many of these people getting laid off. Sorry to hear it and hope there are not more cuts to come. BCBSOK was a lot better before it was bought out by HCSC. I know that the economy and the talk of socializing health care are factors in these layoffs. I pray Obama does not get his way and put more of my friends out of work.

Shhh, you can't say that. It's racist hatred.

I went ahead and fixed that for you. A company would be foolish to react to a market condition that doesn't exist. And I guarantee that HSBC ain't a foolish company.
Reminds me of a time I worked for a company that had a change of ownership, and as my co-workers and myself had been accumulating time toward our week(s) paid vacation, as the year was just about finished for me, when I bring it up, the boss says "oh, you didn't know?", that we are not getting our paid vacations.
Anytime the owners and management want to take gains out from the commoners, they can manage it. We could bring a lawsuit, but, what's in it for the judge? They will just say, "Ye are idle, get back to your burdens."
Please change the title of the thread.

The company is called HCSC. I have many friends that still work there and they mention the economy and the impending health care reform as reasons for the layoffs in the memo to all employees. I have heard from several that the execs at HCSC are very worried about about the possibility that health care could be socialized. They cannot compete with the government because they do not have to make a profit or do a good job to stay in business. All my friends that have jobs and the retired people getting pensions are all very worried. The majority of people do not want socialized health care so my hope is that Congress will listen to them.

The 43rd/Memorial jobs are mainly billing & customer service. The job cuts are more administrative jobs, such as finance and accounting, which are located downtown.

Of the 200 jobs to be cut, (I heard that) about 20 were finance/acctg, underwriting and IT. The remaining jobs to be cut are FEP (Federal Employees Program) claims/customer service.

You're right. I used to work with HCSC when I lived in Chicago, and that's the correct name. HSBC is a bank.
Since details are still being negotiated and no bill has left committee yet, I doubt these layoffs were in reaction to healthcare reform. They don't have to compete against the government currently (any more than they ever have), and so there's no reason for change. Taking preemptive action against an unknown is just stupid business.
Make note that some employees will be offered jobs in Texas, but it was made clear that the economics in the small community they would work in, ......would dictate that pay would be reduced. It is more likely they are using health care changes as a scapegoat for decreasing employee costs. Might as well blame the gubmint.
