Post by: stsong on July 13, 2009, 09:43:05 AM
Does anyone know what happened to Up the Creek? Haven't even tried it yet, it's already gone?

Where was it?

71st and Memorial. It was the same location where Grandy's used to be, it was torn down and rebuild.

Ah.  I've reserved myself to the fact that most anything residing at 71st/Memorial that isn't retail of some sort is destined to die.  And in some cases, if it's badly run retail, it's destined to die.

My case in point?  Yucatan Liquor Stand.  They had a successful one in Houston when I lived there, and tried to have on here but that intersection for some reason doesn't bode well for entertainment venues.  The exception to that is the Loony Bin, which has lasted a decent amount of time there.

They were without a paddle.

Also, the sign has been replaced with one saying "guess who's coming to town" so I'm guessing poor sales + offer on the property = exit stage right.

No surprise.  Bad service and bad food made the prices look even worse.

Yucatan also got their donkey sued off in a DRAM liability case, that couldn't have helped matters any.  I was thinking they lasted in that incarnation for a couple of years, which is more successful than many concept bars.

Yucatan Liquor Stand,

Man, that's a blast from the past. That place was d0uche bag central before being a d0uche bag was cool.

Wasn't it a terrible country bar after it was the liquor stand?

Yep, sh!t kicker bar.  I saw Asia play at Yucatan when Steve Howe was still with the group.  I bet that was a humbling experience for him.

So wait.. the restaurant was crappy and instead of it being replaced with a non-crappy one, it's just reopening under a different name and menu?
