I've heard suggestions for TU to use it for a baseball/softball team.

Have some good ideas for the stadium/land use?

Heard another minor league team to compete with Lamson which will be tough since he's got all that taxpayer and foundation jack.

Maybe the Birchers will come back.....kiddie rides!

I thought Cabella's had some sort of hillbilly haven attraction going in there, or is that going over the top of Little Puddle?

What if we modified it a little bit and tried to wrestle either the womens college softball world series, or the Little League world series away from their current sites?

That'd be great.

But, like most relics of our past.....

I don't think there is another viable use for it. Either it'll sit and rot or it'll be demolished.

We're behind the curve when it comes to dumping our ugly old fairgrounds ballpark with a nice downtown park. As far as I know, all the other cities that preceded us ended up either demolishing the fairgrounds parks or keeping them around but not really using them for anything.

Hotel complex.  Space port.  Parking lot. Dirt field.   Heck, just ask the Murphy's what they want because that is what will go there!

I am all for a go cart track or something of the sort, just bring racing back to the fairgrounds heck lets start and electric racing track we could be all spiffy like that. Oh and instead of scraping the old stands and stuff I am sure we could disassemble them and sell them off eh?

You know what? It would make a good outdoor theater. You could use the new LED technology on the outfield scoreboard. You could use the infield for high dollar cabanas with food and drink and keep the bleachers for the common folk. A sort of modern day drive-in! First run movies for 8 months of the year. Weatherize the cabanas and stay open all winter.

It could work.

it will be torn down and paved, like all good Tulsa places, for fair parking that happens ten days a year...and ticket booth storage the rest of the time

I talked to one of our County Commissioners last week and told him about this thread.

They do not know what they are going to do with the property.

However, they got a kick out of some of your suggestions.

I hear the horse facilities at the fairgrounds are much-much improved.  What could be added to ensure some of the top notch horse shows/competitions/sales continue coming to Tulsa.  Outside of the Pavillion is there meeting space on the fairgrounds?  Is there a need for meeting space with horse/agricultural related shows?

How about a sister for the Driller - facing the corner.

With the OK extension office nearby, how about the County's biggest Community Garden...complete with weekly classes on growing foods adapted to our climate.

Nice(r) hotel. Not everyone can stay at the Microtel.

Microtel's Ralph Jones cut a deal with a county commissioner to put up the money to build the fairgrounds' $2.1 million simulcast facility in exchange for exclusive rights to the hotel business there.
Ten years later the fair board voted to allow Rick Bjorklund to negotiate the purchase of the simulcast facility over the objections of Randi Miller.

In 2004 the Fair Board paid Microtel's owners a $215,000 settlement because they could not agree on the construction of a second hotel.

Its really, really tangled.

This demon would pray for us if it would help.

How much dough would it take to redesign and build it out for soccer?

Gaspar, rendering?

I would go and they don't even have to have fireworks.  Way back when I was an avid fan of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.   I got to see Pele play twice.

I saw him play here with the NY Cosmos back in the day

Well, you may have seen him do an appearance for youth soccer, I remember as a kid going to the Assembly Center for a big Green Country Soccer Association thingy, and Pele was there working with some of the kids.... but Pele never played for the NY Cosmos at Skelly Stadium, he retired after the 1977 season, and Roughnecks' first season was in 1978.

Believe it or not, it was a Tampa Bay Rowdies versus Dallas Tornado exhibition game at Skelly Stadium that convinced the NASL of Tulsa's viability; 11,000 fans watched the game, and Team Hawaii moved to Tulsa....

USL1 wants to be in Tulsa, and they would have no problems playing at the fairgrounds.  No major modifications would be necessary.  USL1 would like to have teams in Tulsa, OKC and San Antonio because they already have a team in Austin and this would help a great deal with travel costs, although the guy I spoke with never talked about travel costs-- he tried to sell me on the kind of regional rivalry the teams could have...

I'd like to see TU bring back college baseball; back when I was a kid, my grandpa used to take me to TU baseball games at the old Oiler Park against OU and OSU.  TU could have an instant baseball rivalry with ORU and Wichita State.  Back in the day, the old Tulsa Oilers ballpark at the fairgrounds was LITERALLY falling apart; Drillers Stadium is NOT, and there's no reason to just bulldoze it.

TU brings back college baseball in the spring; USL1 soccer in the summer.... lease payments made, the County gets a cut of the concessions.... problem solved.

Also, TU's mens soccer program is a hidden jewel and deserves a higher profile.  They have become a regional power along with SMU, St Louis Univ, and Creighton.

TU is #12 in the College Soccer News preseason rankings and the old Driller Park could be a nice venue for them to tout for recruiting purposes.

There's been a rumor about coach McIntosh being courted by SMU... Creighton Univ has benefited greatly in recruiting by having this stadium close to downtown Omaha...

I suggested soccer stadium to County Commissioner Karen Keith last week. I think it is a great idea.

Sorry to hear that the TU coach is being recruited by another school. My kids took the TU soccer camp in June and love Coach Tom McIntosh.
