Fast-food restaurant hopes to be a smash in Tulsa area

TULSA — Upstart restaurant chain Smashburger will be entering Tulsa with two locations, one of which is slated to open this summer.

Denver-based Smashburger, founded in 2007, touts its specialty smashed hamburger — made from ground beef that is placed on the grill in a ball and then smashed into a hamburger patty.

The restaurant chain has 14 locations and plans to open its first Oklahoma restaurant around Aug. 1 at Tulsa Hills Shopping Center near 71st Street and U.S. 75.

Smashburger president Scott Crane describes the chain's concept as "fast casual," where customers order from the counter and then their food is brought to their table.

"The majority of our sales are from the classic Smashburger," he said. "It's basically our half-pound burger on a traditional bun."

Crane said customers also can order Smashburgers with chipotle- or egg-flavored buns.

Burgers range in price from $4.99 to $6.99.

Also on the menu are hot dogs and salads. Beverages include soft drinks, milk shakes and beer, Crane said.

The chain says it plans to open a second location in Tulsa this autumn near 71st Street and Mingo Road, across the street from a Target store.

Crane also hopes to open two to three more stores in the Tulsa area by the end of 2010 and is looking to places such as Stillwater and Bartlesville for additional expansion. In addition, the company is considering franchised locations in the Oklahoma City area.

"HAMBURGERS!  The cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast."

I think I'd rather have a Smash Burger than a squash burger:

Utilizing the Hwy 75 corridor was one of the best moves the city could have made. It looks like there could really start to be some decent type places coming into the area. This fast-food place looks like it's worth a shot. The more variety to the area, the better, IMO. The west side looks like it could be a major move in the upcoming years and I'm glad to see some companies willing to invest into the Tulsa market, no matter how small.

I've been told that this is about the best burger in the world.

Their french fries are shoestring style with sea salt and rosemary.

So is this drive-thru fast food, or is it an $11 meal like Red Robin?

More like if Ron's was a franchise.

This sounds better than the Buffalo Wild Wings that moved up there...wasn't impressed with the service, flavor choices were good but it just came out in one big Gloop.  I'll be sticking to right wing and wing stop

From looking at the menu  http://www.mysmashburger.com/menu/ (http://www.mysmashburger.com/menu/)  I will be giving it a try.   The burger with the smashfries and a Root Beer Float.  sounds good to me.

Yummy, I will be trying this for sure, but I wonder if the Tulsa location will serve wine, us being the bible belt and all, i sure hope so, ive never had a glass of wine with my burger and fries.

But they are going to have to impress me to take the crown from Hardens as the best.

B Dubs is usually a place to get drinks and watch sports.  During football season that place is always packed, well where I am anyways.

That smash burger sounds pretty good, only thing good about Red Robin is the bottomless fries and the multiple flavored teas you can get.

The big deal around here, for my friends anyway, at B Dubs is MMA fighting PPVs out there on some nights.

I'm not a big fan of MMA.  Gimme my hockey.

I stopped watching UFC after Chuck Liddell's retirement.  He was the only reason for me to watch...what a hottie...LOL.  Yup I understand the hockey  :)

Can anyone explain to me why my coworkers (in another state) call it BW3?

Where is the third W?

The third W is for weck.

QuoteOriginally called Buffalo Wild Wings & Weck, from which the abbreviation BW3 was created, the restaurant became a franchise with more than 550 locations across 38 U.S. states.

Wings still can't compare to the Anchor Bar, the ORIGINAL buffalo wings...mmm...mmm...good!  When I was younger and we used to cross the border into Buffalo my mom always had to stop there. Beef on Weck is sooo good, darn it you guys are making me hungry for a garbage plate!!

On a side note the name of this place reminds me of Family Guy and the Reagan Smash clip.

Beef on weck is amazing -- sliced roast beef and horseradish on a kemmelweck bun (coated with coarse salt and caraway seeds) -- but I don't know of any place in Tulsa that offers it. (BW3 doesn't.)

Right Wing on 11th had beef on weck at one time.  Not sure if they still do.
