Title: Best Japanese food
Post by: HoneySuckle on June 09, 2009, 04:25:33 PM
Is it possible to get fairly authentic Japanese food in Tulsa?

I just got back from Oahu which is more like being in Asia than Hawaii, but the good part of this is that I had the most awesome Japanese food.  Also fell in love with Mochi and would love to find a place here that makes it.

I bet I will have to go to another state or Hawaii if I want authentic Japanese food :'(

I wasn't too impressed with FUJI when I tried them about a year ago.

Thanks for the other recommendation though.

Is Sushi California run by Japanese?

I've gotten some really bad feedback on "In the Raw".

Heard this one is good: Asashi Sushi Bar.

Anyone tried them?

I have heard FlyingFish Sushi is supposed to be pretty good.  But you have to remember there is a difference between sushi you have here compared to the coast.  Having sushi that is fresh makes a huge difference (what we have here is generally frozen and then thawed leaving the meat watery at times)  Asashi is o.k. certainly better than Fuji.

After a little googling,  it looks like California Sushi replaced A sensu or they just renamed the place.   I will have to stop by and try a roll or two.   But I avoid that stretch of Tulsa.  Maybe I will make an exception.

I was unimpressed with Asahi.  I like the food at In The Raw.  I can't stand the restaurant itself at 61st & Sheridan because of the shitty acoustics in the building and they keep turning up this throbbing industrial music the more crowded it gets.  I can't hear by the time I leave.  I like the one on Peoria, the only complaint I ever hear is people complaining it's full of "posers".  I don't give a rats red a$$ if there are posers in there or not.  I don't go there to see or be seen, just to eat.  They have some interesting things on the menu.  Try the sea urchin if you get a chance.

it is way ahead of flying fish.  flying fish emphasizes the bar, sushi california is about food.  it doesnt compare to asahi because asahi is where you go for half price sushi.

Asahi tastes like 1/2 price sushi

MMmmm sushi...So you guys are saying to try:

1)Sushi California (I'll be able to walk there from my apartment, plus I'm a Sushi bar person couldn't care less about the atmosphere.  Give me good sushi, ESPN on the TV, and a cold Sapporo or Kirin and I'm set ;D)

2)Flying Fish (If I want something that has good ambience that is)

3)In the Raw (Since my age group will be there, and to be 'seen' lol)

I'll have to check out that Ichiban for Japanese food.  Anyone know of any good Korean BBQ/food?  I used to be stationed in S. Korea (OSAN), so I'm talking about GOOD Korean food.

Cherish, you could also walk to Fuji's at 71st & Memorial.  I'm not overwhelmed by their food, but what passes for sushi in Tulsa would pass for bait or chum on the coasts.  Best I've had is Shinzen (sp?) on Los Olas in Ft. Lauderdale.

EEKS!  That doesn't hold well with me  :-\  Moving to OK will be the second time moving to the inner part of America (TX), so guess your right about the seafood issue.  I've always lived on the East Coast or up North in Canada (Toronto  ;D) and besides Korea was within 1-2 hours of the beach/ocean.  Hmm...I love seafood too, both of my parents are Caribbean so I'm used to eating seafood I guess as much as most Americans eat meat.  Ah well, I'll suck it up and get used to it...I mean I LOVE BBQ from TX so I'm guessing OK should have some good BBQ/Steak restaurants too right? Hopefully better than the NC BBQ I'm getting now...No Likey Vinegar BBQ  :-X

Don't get me wrong- we've got a very good seafood wholesaler or two who fly in fresh fish daily for area restaurants, but you and I both know it's not as fresh as what is coming off the boats.  I don't mean to scare you off from our sushi joints, but if you are used to having it closer to the water, you will know the difference.  Steak and BBQ- we've got great steak and BBQ.  Naturally, I think the best steak and BBQ comes from my back yard.

What part of the great Caribbean are your parents from?  I'm a huge fan of the BVI's

My dad's from Jamaica and my Mom is from Trinidad.  I go to Carnival in Trinidad every year (except this past year).  Magen's Bay is a nice beach, which is in St. Thomas, that's where I first scuba dived.  VERY NICE!

Have you traveled to other Islands in the West Indies?

PM Conan. This "friendly conversation" should take place elsewhere. Maybe in the raw.....

And that's kinda crazy that you're a hockey fan.  We'd get along just fine.  Tulsa has an AA level team that plays in the new arena; I'm a season ticket holder.  Seats down on the glass for 32 home games are about 690.

As far as NHL...I'm for any team that happens to be playing the Red Wings.  Can't stand the Flying Tires....

Well I started the thread and didn't care that it got sidetracked!  No worries Cherish.

BTW, I've been to St. Lucia, Barbados, Puerto Rico and Trinidad & Tobago (both islands).  Going to Trinidad in August for 10 days.  Now looking for an apartment there with a/c, LOL

I know what good seafood tastes like, so I'm guessing that no way will the sushi here taste anything like what I experienced in Honolulu...sigh :'( :-\

Well I know you'll have fun in Trinidad.  I'm drooling right now with the food you'll be eating like doubles, roti & curry chicken (my Fav!), phulourie, buss up shut, and pelau...and wash it down with Carib beer, ginger beer (need an acquired taste for this one), or Coconut water...mmmm  ;D

Daughter wants to go to In The Raw for her birthday this week.  I just read some not very nice reviews on Trip Advisor.

Some of you still think they make okay Sushi?  I guess we could take her and I could have something to drink :-\

I've never had a negative experience at In The Raw. Same with Tsunami (when they were around), Asahi, and Fuji.

I've started to ignore the reviews on places, because the only time any seems to comment is if they've had a negatvie experience (which is never balanced by positive experience feedback). Then again, I've also started ignoring most user comments sections.

I just ate at the one in OKC last night with my GF.  The sushi is good by Oklahoma standards, the presentation is good, and the service is usually pretty good at ITR.  My only complaint on ITR has been the blaring techno music they play at the 61st & Sheridan location which keeps getting louder as the crowd gets bigger.  It wouldn't be quite so bad if the acoustics didn't suck so bad in that room.  The only other complaint I ever hear is all the "posers" that eat at the one on Brookside.  I guess I'm not too concerned about who else is in there when I go because the crowd doesn't bother me and I'm pretty far from pretentious.

It's never going to be quite as fresh as what you find on the coasts, but again by local standards, it's pretty good.  We had the ID, Rockin' Cajun, and Some Like It Hot rolls.  We both love very spicy food.  No disappointments with the Rockin' Cajun.
