I noticed the Shell station at 51st and Peoria was closed a while back...now the little one at 15th and Main looks like it's closed, and the one at 15th and Utica is becoming something other than a Shell---at least they don't take Shell gas cards any more. Anyone know if these are related, or is it Shell randomness?
Area Shell stations hurt by supplier's bankruptcy
The bankruptcy of a Kansas gasoline distributor has caused supply disruptions at some Tulsa stations and forced the company to close one downtown outlet, officials said Wednesday. I knew that bankruptcy had affected some Kansas stations but didn't make the Tulsa connection, thanks.
Charging 5-10c/gallon over competitive prices hurts a gas station too.
well the shell at 51st and peoria closed due to I-44 widening. The downtown station was owned by the Kansas company, as well as one on 33rd and 244 in southwest tulsa which also closed. 15th and utica is unrelated.

The one near me is always cheaper than the nearby QT.
For the stations near me it usually goes something like this:
Shell - $1.75
QT -$1.76
Phillips 66 - $1.89

That's rare, Shell usually is the same or higher than QT, .05 to .10 unless they are across from each other.
The Shell near me is usually the same as the QT 2 1/2 miles from it. Before the state required the Ethenol stickers, it was alway's about 5 to 10 cent's higher. The owner who is from India stated to me when I asked why. He said that their gas was not blended and was better so that was the reason. I never said a word when the stickers were applied and he had to price match

Part of that though, partially in the station owner's defense, is due to the supplier stating to the buyer that they don't blend. If your vendor tells you something, then you normally believe it. If the vendor lies, I'd start shopping for a new vendor.
Although there are kits to test for the presence and amount of ethanol in fuel. I know some agency in Oklahoma checks pumps once a year for accuracy, and the fuel is checked for the amount of ethanol in it compared to how they are stickering the pumps (there are different requirements based on the amount of ethanol in the fuel).

Only on rare occasion have I seen the one at 91st and Memorial post a lower price than the Phillips 66 across the street. Both are usually more expensive than QT.
The Shell on 15th & Main was usually the same price as the QT on 15th & Denver also....I used to always buy my gas there because it was close to my apartment, and my car doesn't like QT gas....I'm sad it's gone...the store workers were always very friendly too. :(
The Shell station on 41st and Yale is like 17c above QT prices.

They're full service and use MTBE rather than ethanol, I think.

Yes, that is one of the few full service stations left.
The Shell at 15th and Main is gone and the Shell at 61st and Yale is gone (covered on another thread, possibly a restaurant) Any idea if anything's going in on 15th?
It hardly matters we have QT in Tulsa and they are the king anyhow- they rule "T" Townes gas prices. QT sets the standards and the look, and the style that sets the style QT, QT, mark of great fuel! When QT says something the others listen.

That wasn't helpful.
Then this may be more helpful. There is a Shell Station on the corner of 31st and Sheridan, they are priced the same as the QT station on the north side of the street. As far as I know they are not going to close up. There is also a Shell station on Harvard & 36th, some clerk was killed there in a robbery last year. There still seems to be Shell stations around if ya look for 'em.
B.A. has a couple that I know of. 71st and 238th E Av and 61st and County Line by the High School.
Both are owned by people from India.
There ya go, there are plenty of Shell stations around- but why would anyone want to go a Shell station when there are so many nice QT stations around? QT sets the price standards and other companies follow them. I remember as a kid there actually was a time when gas stations had "price wars", that was back in the 1960's- not no more.... Today the stations jump on the bandwagon to raise the prices.

Every dog has his day. In my youth it was FINA and PEMCO gas stations. They had to give away a set of Anchor Hocking glass ware to get you to buy a full tank of gas. Price wars killed a lot of station owners who actually owned their stations and purchased gas from the big guys. So, when the gas wars were raging, they were the victims. Service, location and brand loyalty were deciding factors.
Things don't always change for the best.
As a young lad. I worked for Vickers, Thomco, Surfco and DX. Times sure have changed where Petrol Stations are concerned.

DX gas was terrible. I got significantly (considering the 10 to 12 MPG of the 70s) less MPG using DX compared to Texaco. DX also gummed up my carburetor and required a rebuild. "Merging" with DX was probably one of Sun Oil's less intelligent moves.
Since we are now clomping down memory lane here's a few others which were local gas stations:
Apco, Consumers, & Hornet.

Fina? I seem to remember one at S.E. corner of 71st & Memorial, at the only stop light between 51st and (at least) 131st.
Our gasoline will be getting much worse the EPA is going to force 15% blend into our fuel instead of the current 10% and that will cause alot of damage to our vehicles, worse they want to ban 100% gasoline from being sold.

you do realize they're not using the summer blend this year, right?
::)
And I have a relative working for the EPA in Washington. That's complete horse crap. You need to stop watching Fox News for your primary source of info.

I've only been in this town long enough to remember that as a Circle K.
