I thought his visit to Turkey was a good idea, as well.
Tensions have been strained with them, both from the Iraq invasion, and the more recent Israeli war crimes accusations during the Gaza operations.
Turkey is a key NATO ally. For many years they maintained a large standing army and were the first line of defense to the middle-east during the cold war.
Kennedy used them to bargain our way out of WW III during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
And all the right-wing rapturists should take note that Turkey still stands in the way of "the Bear" and Israel.

They're also the only major secular power that has a majority of muslim citizens. They have their issues but they also stand as a great example of how Islam can function within a democratic society.
