Wow...
Scroll down a bit for the most recent trailer (released on March 9th)
I wasn't real thrilled about this movie...until I saw this trailer.

It's gonna be pretty impressive. Star Trek has never had a budget before.
Still not sure about Sulu in hand to hand combat in a movie..
Hellooooo -George Takei
Oooh the new preview does look good. But I really liked the first one as well. I have the new Star Trek movie as my screensaver with the timer counting down the days till it shows. ;D ;D I was born the year Star Trek came on,,, and have been a Trekster ever since. 8)
I'm geeking out. :o
Yes, this last preview helped a lot with my acceptance of this film.
I thought showing Kirk as a young man was dangerous territory, and showing him as a delinquent was sacrilege. And just HOW could a delinquent kid rise to captain of a Starship?? Have to say, this preview tied all the loose ends nicely.
If I got it all right, Kirk's Dad was a starfleet officer. A good one. He is forced to take command of a starship during an emergency and in 12 minutes manages to save 800 people, giving his life in the process.
This explains why Kirk is a delinquent kid, having grown up without his father, and explains why he was still accepted into the academy.
Looks like a lot of action, too. Looking forward to it now, although after Cloverfield, I still do not trust J.J. Abrams.
We'll see...

Hmm, I thought it fit perfectly. I always thought Kirk had that "rebellious, risk taking, delenquent kid" aspect to him even as a captain. One could hardly imagine him being some perfect little quiet type, student/nerd. I didnt need to know anything about his father to guess that. Its just the way his character was always painted in the series.

I think the problem is with uber-Trek geeks who seem to think that if JJ Abrams doesn't stick to 'canon' (http://www.canonwars.com/STCanon.html), then he's epic fail.
I think that you need to reboot a classic every once in a while (Battlestar Galactica) in order to infuse fresh ideas into it.
I'm going to 'be ill' on May 8th, I'm pretty sure.
;D

Don't get me started on Battlestar Galactica.
The mini-series was great. But after Season 2, that show jumped the shark. Terrible writing--too many plot loopholes (were they making it up as they go along?), the destruction of personal character, terrible attempts to shadow modern-day politics, I really hate that show.
Glad to see that it is over.

One could hardly imagine him being a vandal, or getting his butt kicked in a bar, either. I'm still on the sidelines on this one, although I have hope.

I don't think it was real bad after season 2, but I agree about the plotlines. The whole Starbuck and Apollo sexual tension thing was really getting old in a hurry and as a result I quit watching it essentially around the time they kicked the crap out of the Pegasus. That two parter was epic new BSG.

He isn't a vandal. Or the one getting his butt kicked.

Do you have plot details Scott? The reports I read infer that he is a borderline vandal/troublemaker and Captain Pike, knowing who is father was, challenges him 'to do better'.
And it did look a little like he was getting his arse handed to him in that bar.

He is a bit of a troublemaker and aimless and getting in fights. Pike is a family friend like you mentioned and gets him to turn his life around.

Holy sh** he totally looks like Pike!

So what if he was? In the series you could tell he had that streak in him. Even Picard who was portrayed as being more of a "follow the rules, dont rock the boat" type than Kirk, was also shown to have had a, get into trouble, streak when he was younger. Was always pushing the limit, bending the rules, getting into fights, playboy, etc. as a cadet in Starfleet. One could only imagine what Kirk would have been like.

Don't forget Picard even has his own maneuver.
Not even Kirk got a maneuver.

This will color me as a pseudo-Trekkie, but there really was a 'Picard Maneuver' referenced in the show as being somewhat of a military maneuver.
It wasn't until after season two that the real 'maneuver' (where a member of the crew tugs on their jacket to straighten out wrinkles or whatever) started being referred to as that, since in season one they all wore those horrible one-piece jumpsuits.
Carry on.
The Picard Manuever was first done when Picard was on the USS Stargazer, it is where, in battle a ship warps for a short distance. The ship appears to be two places at once and while the enemy is shooting the "old you" the "new you" is firing at them.
Not that I would know.. or anything...
And yeah, the shirt tug adopted the name later as a joke.
Some Austin trekkies got a surprise last night. They were attending was was advertised to be a newly restored print of Wrath of Khan, and instead were greeted by Leonard Nimoy introducing the world premier of the new movie. The review below is encouraging in many ways.

I totally forgot about that episode of TNG! You're right, Picard got into some serious bar room trouble when he was young, didn't he!! LOL.
I was calling Kirk a vandal because in the preview it shows him drive a vintage (VINTAGE--as in over 200-years-old) Corvette over a cliff. That is vandalism, although, I'm sure he had his reasons.
This movie could be really good. Can't wait to find out.
Long live the Kirk
