Just heard that even TU will be closed tomorrow, and they're always reluctant to close.
Tulsa is the ultra lame tonight.
D&B's kicked a bunch of customers out at 7:00pm tonight and shut down.
Barnes & Noble and Borders were both closed before 7:00 [:(]
I drove to all of these locations 5mph over the speed limit, desperately searching for something to do, and had to marvel at fear and docility of the residents of this overgrown mid-western town.
As I type this, at 8pm, the sidewalks and some parking lots are iced over. No precip is currently falling. ALL major streest (both 4 and 2 lane in South Tulsa are wet, not slick).
[:(]
Seriously? When my hubby was coming home around 5:30 he said it was quite slick. He was near to TU coming to almost 91st.

It was slick earlier. Surely the road crews have salted and sanded since then. Why they don't have an ice melt solution to spray on the roads before they get treacherous I will never figure out.

Good, I tell you what...
Get outside about two AM, then drive as fast as you possibly can down the following roads:
1. Elwood Street between 61st and 71st.
2. Riverside Drive.
3. The I-44 curve on the BA.
Let me know from your hospital bed how that worked out for you.

They tried the magnesium once one season and they could never get it quite right. The first time it created more accidents then the weather did. I don't think they used it anymore after that.

Eh, barring there being any traffic, anyone who can countersteer properly should be able to drift around those curves at at least 50. ;)
I'm from Iowa. I learned to drive in the winter in Iowa. It is generally no big deal.
Last night some roads were slick as I took my boy from 28th and Harvard out to 121st and Garnett (~5pm). The surface streets were pretty bad - so long as you stayed ~5 under (under Hawkins, not over, under) the speed limit and planned on stopping in twice the distance you were just fine.
The freeways were mostly clear. Some of the turns and most of the overpasses were slushy messes. But again, so long as you knew that it wasn't a problem.
Oddly enough, the freeways were lined with cars facing various directions.
This AM, the roads are much better. The major streets have enough traffic to be clear. The sides streets have enough sleet to be OK. If I tried I could fishtail around corners easily, but otherwise no issues at all.
Per the de-icer: it is just a matter of economy. It is very expensive to spread material out (1ton covers 1 block if you go thick, 5 blocks if you go thin for sand/salt - or so I was told by a cousin who works for the IDOT) and the ice spray is no exception. It makes little sense to spend that kind of money when it will merely melt away in a day or two.
Resist the urge to drive like there's nothing wrong and there will be nothing wrong.
I understand downtown/TU area did freeze up on the roads yesterday, but this morning, 81st & Memorial is frozen and white, last night at 11:00 it was only wet.
I drove 10 under this morning on it.

Well that explains everything. I just did not know what exactly was wrong with you. [:P]
Tulsa streets can get bad in winter. They don't salt the roads much there. There is a big winter storm slamming the midwest with freezing rain and up to 8" of snow. Things are looking grim. Wednesday the worst of the snow moves in. The plows and salt trucks are on 12 hour shifts around the clock in Ohio till this mess is over. Global warming indeed.[xx(][B)]

Uh, dude, both ice storms we've had this year have had trucks out with SALT. I know because I spent two separate car washes washing SALT off my car.
We salt more than you think.
You might want to have someone report in who actually lives here before you post about a city you don't live in anymore.

Great idea! I'm cross country skiing to the Colony tonight. Try to stop me.
Bixby usually applies a thermal treatment to melt ice and snow. (They wait for the sun.) I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised during the last storm to see a sand/salt on the street in front of our house. Tulsa maintenance on Memorial usually stops at 101st. If I can get to 101st & Memorial, I can get to work.

I was contemplating Colony myself. What time you gonna be there?

A couple of years ago my SO was working with someone who lives in Bixby. When it iced, I had to drive down there and pick her up and take her (and my SO) to work. It was pretty ridiculous how Bixby did essentially no plowing or sanding on their part of Garnett. Of course the subdivisions were skating rinks.
Our fair city isn't very good at plowing the streets apparently. I just had to go to Walgreen's (my SO forgot to mention yesterday that she needed a refill on her prescriptions, boo) and neither 15th or Lewis have had anything done to them today.
You'd think they'd have had time to mostly clear the main roads at least.
Not that it really matters to me. I don't have much trouble driving on snow, but if traffic had been heavier it would have been rather dangerous.

I did not see a single city vehicle in South Tulsa (Yale, Sheridan, Memorial) south of 91st trying to plow streets. I guess my tax dollars are funding someone else's street--probably in freakin midtown near 31st & Harvard. [:P]
TU still closed, which has got to be a first time. In all the years we have lived here, they have always been reluctant to close. I remember them closing in 07 for one day.
And Woodland Hills mall. Lordy, I bet those merchants are crying.
Well at least the power outages were minimal this year!! Remember last year? Half of 71st Street was on, and the other half was off.
Many Tulans were without power for days.
All the merchants (particularly restaurants) that had power raked in the cash, as people got out of their dark homes in search of warmth and entertainment.
Hawkins, that isn't entirely true. At the mall sales were not up very much. People were going to hang out and stay warm, not to shop. No-school days are a similar affair.
Not saying it doesn't help, but it isn't the boon one might think.

The restaurants did rake it in, however.
Keep warm folks, and keep thinking global warming thoughts. I never could understand when someone says "climate change" what does that mean? What is changing? Are we going (changing) from hot to cold, or cold to hot, wet to dry?. "Climate Change" means something is changing from one thing to something else but no one ever says what that something else is. (global warming is clear the believers in that say the planet is overheating peroid.) Also, exactly what is the normal temp. of planet earth? The planet has been spinning around for 4.5 Billion years and at times both poles were ice free, maybe ice free poles are the normal temp of earth. Man's only been around a few hundred thousand years. IMO I don't believe in neither, The earth's climate is always changing as far as that goes. Happy Winter Everyone! [B)]

why did I know you'd creep out about that when it's cold like this?
But ignore the bout of 70s and record high temps we had earlier in the month.
Oh, wait a minute, maybe the temps weren't so high in Columbus oHIo.

It was sure good to get out today. Classes resumed at TU and TCC...yaaaaaayyyy.
Public/private schools are open tomorrow. Not sure if all the private schools are, but I am sure those kids are either keen to go back out (away from mammas nagging, lol) or they're ticked off that they won't have more free time to play Wii.
I hate winter!!

Look about ya, it's cold all over. The deep south is in the deep freeze. Tulsa is been in the teens and heating bills are going into orbit. The northern plains are busting cold temp records every week. Fairbanks, Alaska hit almost -80 below zero two weeks ago. It's a cold & long winter and winter just started. The schools used up all their "snow days" already and will have to make them up in June. It's one big "Burrrr"![xx(]

All I'm sayin' is, you ALWAYS ignore the record highs, which we've had plenty of this season. Only when it promotes your 'global warming is a hoax' agenda will you pipe up. Selective statistic parsing.
I'm not saying it's not cold, as long as you'll admit there have been a plethora of record highs this season.
I don't get what's so difficult to grasp about the concept of an higher overall global temperature causing more extremes due to the weather systems being stronger, thus pushing warm air farther north ahead of the systems and cold air farther south behind them.

I heard some people say that the melting polar ice burgs break off and drift south and that chills the air making it colder down south. They just don't give up.. Scientists that don't get any funding don't believe in global warming. Many Scientists who believe in it change their mind when they retire and don't get any more funding. Groups that fund a science project want the scientists to come out with results that supports their point of view, or that scientist will find himself unemeployed. If you hire some guy to prove that global warming is real and his results say global warming is a hoax- you'll fire him and hire someone else who will find that global warming is real. That's part of the problem.[B)]

Christ on a crutch. I guess this is the example of if you have 100 monkeys pounding a typewriter for 100 years, you get a sauerkraut post.
I swear, these dumb*ss deniers show up every time it gets nippy out. Then they scurry away and hide when it gets into the 60s and 70s like it will later this week.
Hello?! It's the overall long-term temperature trend that's important! It's not what's going on THIS WEEK! (Shakes head.)
The real crapper is people are ignoring the acidification of the oceans, which is happening because of more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. When you start messing the the pH level of massive bodies of water such as the oceans, weird and bad things are going to happen.
AND~ The global warming loons come out of the woodwork every time it's 90 degrees in July and they scream the sky is falling, and they say things like "we must act now before it's too late the planet is overheating". When it's real cold in winter they vanish away. Al Gore has been very quiet lately. Al Gore depends on pushing this global warming hoax so he can sell his carbon credits, no global warming = no carbon credits and his business tanks. BTW I thought from what they said that global warming will be felt more in winter, than in summertime with milder and warmer winters and less snow or so they always said before. But they flip flop everytime the weather does not match the global warming models. That guy from NASA (Hansen) was caught doctoring temp. records to make it look like 2007 was the hottest year ever. He used October temps for November temp readings, he got caught and said it was a honest mistake. If global warming was real there would be no need to doctor stuff.
