Post by: Porky on December 26, 2008, 08:28:22 PM
I've requested this many, many times.

Could you please create a board for our photography of the Tulsa area?

I think we should have a rule, No posting pics if you wont allow them to be shared. We should want Tulsa to be promoted by allowing people to use or share good pics of what we have here. There are plenty of other places you can post a pic and not let anyone use them. Anything like this sponsored by TN should actually promote the use of and allow for LOTS of free sharing.

Well said William, I agree completely. There's so many ways we could promote our city with our pictures.

The places I found to post pictures all wanted the right to SPAM you and sell your adddress.  Since I only have one e-mail address, I chose not to use them.

It might be a nightmare for TN to moderate a picture area.  I don't know about the cost for the storage space except that it wouldn't be free.

I would like an area to post an occasional picture though.

We could get a web site for < $10 a month.  I'd be willing to manage it if nobody else is.  I just now registered the domain tulsasights.com (tulsapictures.com is taken by a squatter).  If you guys want me to go ahead and get a hosting plan, let me know.

This is a good site to download pictures on to post. It's own by Photobucket so there's no spamming with it. I've used them for years:

That maybe the best way to go, Jiminy. TulsaNow could even link to it, as broadcasting stations could as well.

Sounds good.  Does anybody have any input as to how much space we will need?  I'm thinking 1 gig to start.  I've found the webhosters that offer unlimited space and bandwidth for $5/mo are not the way to go... so I'm thinking of Liquidweb's basic plan for $15/mo.  I know TulsaNow is hosted on TulsaConnect and that would be nice, but unless their website is way out of date, their prices are not competitive.  Liquidweb has a great reputation and has plans that would let us grow if the site takes off.

I'm fairly good with HTML and PHP, but not so good at web design.  If someone has a mockup of a front page, I can implement it... otherwise, I'll probably use a template provided with one of the open source content management systems.  We'd probably use Coppermine as the photo gallery, or perhaps 4images, at least to start.

Any input?  Thoughts?  Am I getting ahead of myself?  I'm willing to cover the $15/mo to start, but if we need to upgrade, I might ask for voluntary help, or (gasp) put some ads on to cover the costs.  I'm absolutely not looking to make any money on it.

Yes, our website is quite out of date (and yes, we're working on a new one :)).  Drop us a line at sales@tulsaconnect.com and we'll make you a deal for the site hosting.

As far as space goes, are you going to allow high resolution images? If so, those files can easily exceed 3M. So, 1G would not be nearly enough. If you limit the files to 500K, then yes, 1G would probably be enough to get started. If you want full-on, high-rez shots, then I think 2-3G would be good to start.

Can somebody please tell me what the point of this site would be? Obviously, that Flickr group has a lot of images of live bands which I'm not sure was the original intention. But wouldn't it be easier to have the admin group put more restrictions on the group and delete images (or add moderators who can help)? With a photo website, not only is space a very important factor, but so is bandwidth.

+1
Restore the Flickr site to it's original purpose and shuffle the other content to side galleries.

Mainly the advantage would be having full control over the site, and having a dedicated domain.  It doesn't have be be limited to a picture gallery, we could put anything on it.

Unless I am missing something, those flikr pictures are all pretty small.  How do you see larger versions?  Could put all of those in a gig at that size.

Garsh, that sounds great but what happened between y'self and David Ournutt's Tulsa Toady? Did you guys purposefully take down his site - some geek editing - or were you unable to handle a little extra bandwidth?  Ha ha!

I have had to call Tulsa Connect several times in relation to iPhone issues, and every time they have been great help, easy to get hold of, and very friendly!

A good, easy to use, open source photo gallery is Coppermine: http://coppermine-gallery.net/. Coppermine has many themes and is very customizable.

Looking around on that website, it has a coupon code for http://www.hostgator.com which appears to have some good prices. For $8/mo, you get unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domains, unlimited MySQL DBs

We are going to be replacing Snitz, hopefully early in 2009. It was supposed to be a 2008 project but got hung up with technical difficulties. TulsaConnect is working with us on it and whatever we do implement to replace this forum will also have photo gallery features.

And yeah, in the meantime there is flickr.

Given this, I think Flickr is fine for now if the current admin is willing to promote some people to Moderators to purge the irrelevant images. I'd be willing to assist when I can.

We really need something well structured to view Tulsa in an easy and quality format for viewing.

What I'd like to see is a Tulsa photo blog akin to Shorpy (//%22http://shorpy.com%22) that would show vintage photos of old Tulsa.

That would rock.

I'd be willing to help out. But, we (you) would need to decide on a specific purpose for the Flickr group. Right now, its just for members of the TulsaNow group to upload any photo they want. If this is the intended purpose, then no change or additional moderation is needed. If we wanted to change this to be specifically for pictures of Tulsa, then that needs to be stated before we start purging images.

How is it not a good format? What more are you wanting? I have no issues with is. It allows for thumbnail previews of a group of images and they can be easily blown up. Combined with the Firefox plugin CoolIris, I think it is just fine.

I think part of the reason some may not like flickr at first glance is the notion that you can only see the smaller sized pic.  Thats the result of the people who are currently uploading not allowing others to share the pics. When you allow them to be shared, you can click on a symbol over the pic and it will then show you different sizes from thumbnail to large and extra large versions.

I do think we should come up with a "purpose" for a TN flickr group. There are plenty of Tulsa groups of one sort or another on flickr already. No need just adding another place where people can dump random photos with nary any semblance of connection to Tulsa or things in Tulsa.

You can even set up groups or "Sets" that people can contribute to within the TN group. You download your pics then can also put them into a particular "set" that is off to the side, which people can click on to see more specific things.

Suggestion for some sets within the TN group might be...

Tulsa Architecture........ (downtown buildings, mansions, churches, contemporary, historic, etc.)

Tulsa Events and Activities...... (bands, concerts, Mayfest, Octoberfest, Tulsa Tough, restaurants, museums, sports, etc.)

Around Tulsa........ (suburban downtowns, events, Jenks Aquarium and riverwalk, Rooster Day, landscape, etc) This one is debatable.

Tulsa Parks and Nature........... (ice storms lol, sunsests, river, zoo critters, squirrels in Woodward Park "there always seem to be pics of those lol", rose garden, trails, etc.)

New development.......  ( buildings under construction or recently finished, examples...BOK Center, Contemporary homes on Cherry Street, Bomasada, shopping centers in South Tulsa, Baseball Park, remodel of Mayo Hotel, construction sites with the sign of whats to be constructed, home or building being torn down for new development, etc.)

Historic Images...... (stuff from the Beryl Ford Collection, lost Tulsa, etc.)

The point would be to show off Tulsa; its history, whats going on now, what there is to do, its architecture and landscape. NO DUMPING of photos, just a few choice pics, your few best and most interesting or telling.   NOT every single photo resulting in 100 or more of some unknown singer at a bar in practically the same pose,,, or every single move of the local high school football team at some game, or 1,000 pics of a squirrel or kid at the park,,, no matter how cute either may be lol.

I will volunteer to be a moderator if we settle on a theme and format for a flickr site.

I don't think you can create separate sets from within groups. I'm an admin on three groups and I just checked to see if maybe this was a new feature and I do not see it. We could implement a guideline that asks users to tag images they upload to the group with the phrases you specific and that would allow us to narrow it down that way.

The "tag" idea could work.  But are you sure you cant create different "sets" like a regular user can by going to the "organize" feature? I would check on the "Downtown Live" site but I lost the passwords and such lol.

If you're a member of the TN group on Flickr, does that mean that every picture you upload goes into the TN goup pool?  (I thought you had to specifically tag a photo to be in a certain group.)

Does TN have any control over individual pics that go into the TN Flickr group pool?

If not, it looks like we need more categories.  See Artist's suggestions above.

It would be cool if the TN forum had a photo gallery to make it easier to post photos pertinent to discussion/debate.  But we'd need a whole new set of rules and guidelines for posting photos.  And it will definitely increase the workload of the moderators!

The only person who has ultimate control over that, would be the person who created the group.  That person can grant administrative rights to users (which of course are not tied to users here; you have to have a Flickr account).

I don't mind. Go to SpiveyPhoto (//%22http://www.spiveyphoto.com/gallery/7301810_d7TbJ#469869441_uoDXn%22) and click on the "I".

Disclaimer: This is a blend of three photos. I stacked the pix in Photoshop and used the Lighten Colors blend mode. This brought only the trails from the other 2.

The picture could be better. some of the lights were pretty blown out. If I really wanted to get it right, I would have had to have done an HDR to make a base and then blend the trails in.

And of course, to get the trails, I had to use ISO 100. In the next few weeks I'm going to get out and try out this camera's most important feature - ISO 3200 and 6400. I've played a little and it's pretty impressive.

This is during the interim until TN relaunches with a photo gallery. No sense in going all out for a temporary solution when Flickr works fine.

Any news on that now that the new board is afloat?
The album art is nice but a distraction that could be better categorized.

P.S.  mspivey, nice nightscape.  Higher ISO speeds mean more noise, though.
Here's one taken at 21st & Lewis for a light trespass issue, ISO 400 2 1/2 sec at f3.5

I think people are still posting to it.
