Title: Homemade DVR
Post by: Michael71 on December 15, 2008, 01:50:31 PM
Anyone using a homemade DVR or the BeyondTV (//%22http://www.snapstream.com/products/beyondtv/%22) software?  It looks like a pretty solid product & PCMag recommends it.

I really don't have a need for the cable box from Cox (hate 'em) because I don't watch that many channels.  I just have expanded basic cable & they tell me it would be almost $50/month more because of everything I would need.

if you have a Vista Premium box and Webguide, you can stream video to your phone and also schedule recordings from your phone.  It is really slick.

I second the MythTV recommendation, particularly since MyHTPC/Meedio is no longer around.

MythTV is nice. If it supported CableCARDs, I'd probably use it instead of TiVo.

It seems silly to have to have MPEG encoding done on the box when Cox is sending every single channel in digital already. (The analog channels are duplicated for the digital-only boxes like the DCT/DCH-3416 DVR and the DCT-700)
