Title: Passenger rail ALREADY in Tulsa?
Post by: sgrizzle on December 10, 2008, 08:22:59 AM
I just saw a passenger train on the BNSF line. What is that train and why isn't it stopping here?

What passenger train?  These are not the passenger cars you seek, please move along.

Wasn't that the plot of a good TV show made into a bad Will Smith movie?

KC to Fort Worth (//%22http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2008/12/08/daily8.html%22)

Could also be a "special run or work train" (//%22http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/p/142839/1591176.aspx%22)

Also from Kansas (//%22http://www.kslegislature.org/committeeminutes/07-08/interim_joint/special/spTrans20070824.pdf%22) from last year I admit.

So all we need to do is get them to stop?

Back in '67 or '68 I rode a train from Tulsa to KC and back with my brothe and our parents. It left from the old AT&SF station at 1st and Elgin and it either went up the route along Hwy 75 or took the line that runs east to the airport and POC then follows up 66 into KS through Chetopa. The closet any rail comes to Phoenix is Tucson or Flagstaff.

I'm just trying to figure out all the threads about getting passenger service to consider coming TO tulsa when it's already here, just not stopping.

Yes, they run from KC to B'ville, Tulsa, then to OKC. Here is Amtrak's route map (//%22http://tickets.amtrak.com/secure/content/atlas/index.html%22), it's called a thru route. I don't know if it's in use all the time, but it appears there is service thru Tulsa.

'Thruway service' is a bus.

Well, I am intrigued. I too rode a train out of the old Union Station to Kansas City in about 1965 to watch the Kansas City Athletics play the New York Yankees. That was probably the route we took as I remember passing cars on what I thought was 66 hiway.

Some serious answers please:
 -Is it a regular route?
-Why can't it stop here and pick up passengers?
-Where is the BNSF line where you saw the train?

It is incredible that I've lived here so long and haven't seen a passenger train since the sixties.
