Title: What are you thankful for?
Post by: Hometown on November 26, 2008, 11:04:31 AM
I'm curious what other folks are thankful for this Thanksgiving 2008?

When I contemplate what I am thankful for two things come to mind.

I sometimes overlook how steady and dependable my partner of 21 years is.  He is not a complainer and doesn't call attention to the fact that everyday he gets up and does all the things expected of him.  He has held up his end of the bargain for so long and so consistently that I come to take it for granted.  But then I stop and realize that I am so lucky that I found him in that bar on Polk Street over 21 years ago and asked him for a cigarette.  He gave me his last one.

I am also thankful that Obama won the presidency.  I am thankful for the change and feel that things for working people will be better with some time.

A couple years ago, I made a list of Tulsa things to be thankful for.  Upon review, I had to delete several things that no longer exist.  (Swinny's Hardware, Zingo, River's Edge, Metro Diner Shakes, and Halim & Mimi's.)

So now I've got to think of 5 new things to take their place.

Here's my original list, minus the things we've lost lately:

Mulligatawny and/or Tortilla soup at Impressions
The Gargoyles on the Philtower
The Sausage Cheeseburger at Ron's
Steve's Sundries & Books
April in Tulsa (when the entire city is blossoming)
October in Tulsa (when the sweet gum trees compete with the sugar maples)
Any time it snows
Sledding at Harwelden
The river trails (for walking and biking and daydreaming)
The Warsteiner Dunkle at McNellies
The Badwich at Elmers
Imperial Rolls at Binh Le's and/or Ri Le's
Downtown architecture
The Thomas Moran paintings at Gilcrease
The Circle Cinema
Art Deco Architecture (all over town, from Rogers High School to Phoenix Dry Cleaners)
Horse shows every weekend at the fairgrounds
Chicken Saagwala at India Palace
The Downtown Tunnel System (on rainy days)
Everyone who has ever taken a chance on downtown, Brady, Blue Dome, the Pearl District, South Boston, Cherry St, 11th Street, etc, etc, etc
Mark Bruner and Shelby Eicher
Rebecca Ungerman
Reservoir Hill
A kick donkey Mayor
The BTW marching band
Ribs at the Knotty Pine
KWGS (Tulsa's NPR affiliate)
Woodward Park/Rose Garden/Linneas Garden
Chandler Park

And my recent additions:

The BOK Center
Dfest
Topeca Coffee
Dwelling Spaces
Lola's
Arnie's
The Cellar Dweller
Joe Mamma's
Drillers Stadium coming downtown
Ann's Bakery is back!
Tsunami Sushi
The Collective on Harvard

And...
All the cool folks I've met through TulsaNow, who make me happy to live in Tulsa...and help me remain optimistic about Tulsa's future.

I'm thankful for alot of things, for my health, and for being smart enought not to put a ton more money in the stockmarket like my investment guy wanted me to do, If I'd have listened to him I'd be in the dumper now, cash is king today.. ThanksGiving day we are having a 5-mile Turkey-Trot race at 9:AM sharp near the OSU campus. The first 1,000 people who finish get a fresh Kroger Pumpkin Pie. They expect over 4,000 runners to race, it's a yearly event. I'm thinking on going but I'll sign up race day, The cost is $35.00 race day and $30.00 before race day.. If the weather is bad I won't go. I'm not much of a cold weather runner. I just can't get lose when it's cold my legs feel like a stiff boards in cold weather. I do my best running in shorts when it's 80 or 90+ degrees outside. Anyhoo, Happy Turkey Day Everyone and a big "gobble-gobble-gobble" to everyone![:)]

I am thankful for a turkey nacho recipe I got thirty years ago from a guy at TU they used to call Mr. Moonie (he looked just like the guy on The Lucy Show played by Gail Gordon).

nacho chips
peppered mozzarella cheese
turkey pieces
salsa
small bits of avocado
sour cream

Make solid layer of chips on baking pan then put cheese on chips. Dip turkey pieces in salsa and add to top, then cover with avocado and small dollops of sour cream.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.

I tried adding the avocado and sour cream afterward. It did seem like it would be better.

But it ain't. The little bits of hot avocado just jump on your taste buds and the sour cream makes it all stay together on a chip.

La Gloria Cubana Series "R" #9 cigars. I recommend them after a big turkey dinner.

Might as well be cheesy, I am thankful for my friends and family. I am thankful for the people I have meet and the people I will meet. I am thankful for my small business, and most of all I am thankful to live in a place like Tulsa, though it has many many faults it is home after all.

I am thankful I was not on that ferris wheel a couple of years ago.  Just wanted to share the photo with everyone, really. Oh that and my family, health, and job.

I've been in a cheesy mood this week.
I'm thankful that I have wonderful kids who don't ask or beg for much.  They only ask for a couple of inexpensive things from Santa every year.  They make straight A's, excel in sports and behave well for their age so what do I do?  Get them what they ask for and more.  They are everything to me and my motivation to do good in the world!  I'm thankful for my furry pet friends who love me no matter what and they are always very happy to see me when I come home every day, and cuddle with me when I'm lonely.  I'm even more thankful for the roof over my head, the car that starts every day and my health which allows me to work and provide for my kids and I.
Now that was cheesy, but it felt real good saying it.
I hope everyone had a nice Turkey Day!

I'm thankful that I now know I am not a working person in the eyes of Obama and Hometown. I guess I can start slacking off by living off my inheritance and the proceeds from my taking advantage of those less fortunate.

I am thinking guido doesn't know how to slack off properly.

Come on, everybody. Help Guido goof off.

I am thankful that the country has embraced change. Since my dad did not leave me independently wealthy as I had hoped, I now feel in step to ask Guido to share his inheritance with me.  [:D]
