Title: Chicago style pizza
Post by: tulsascoot on November 15, 2008, 10:57:08 AM
I went to one of the Joe Momma's trial runs, but we got there too late and they had already started cleaning up. :(

So we were still in the mood for pizza and decided to try a new place called Little Chicago. It occupies the old McDonald's building near 11th and Pittsburgh.

They were really nice people and the Chicago deep dish was excellent. A large 1 topping only runs $13 and will fill 4 people easily.

I highly recommend it, and since it is a new local startup, I suggest we help them out, that is, if you like Chicago style pizza.

Cheers!

What makes a pizza Chicago style?  I've had stone-baked pies that have a different flavor and texture in the crust when compared to the chain restaurant pizzas.

Hmmm.  I'll have to get another baking stone - someone dropped our last one and it shattered - and try it with a pie from Papa Murphys.

Yeah we tried little chicago last week, and it is really good. The crust practically doubles as bread stick. They have a lunch buffet for only $5.99

This may seem odd, but do they have a menu that you order from at the table, or do you have to look at a menu on a wall and order at a counter?

You should consider buying a Lodge cast iron pizza "pan" in place of a stone.  I bought one years ago and love that thing - it produces an incredible crust.  Use it just like you would a pizza stone.  $36/free shipping at Amazon and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

Yes, the original location is in Chicago. If anyone remembers My Pie on south Lewis in the 70's/80's that was awesome Chicago style pizza. There are still My Pie locations in Chicago and surrounds.

I didn't know they made a pizza pan.  I have a couple of cast iron fry pans and a much-used cast iron griddle.  In tandem with the 'magic pancake bowl' it's produced pancakes for my kids since they were babies.  I love using cast iron cookware.

This gives me a good excuse to prowl around some of the kitchen supply stores.  It's easy to get Mom and daughter to agree to one of those expeditions!

I second the Little Chicago recommendation. Excellent pizza at good prices. The kind you need a knife and fork to eat.

My new favorite Tulsa pizzeria.

Four of us went to the Chicago Pizza place for lunch the second week they were open. It was about 12:45 and they had one slice of pizza left on the buffet and enough salad for one person in the salad bar. They had about 5 cinnamon strips and no cheesy bread strips. There was only one other table with a couple of college kids.

I had already paid for the four so we waited for them to make us some new pies. They apologized that they had no more salad and wouldn't have for another day. I grumbled a little, but the waitress promised us pizza soon and kept our drink glasses filled.

It was worth the wait. The deep dish supreme pizza was exraordinary and the cheese was fine as well.

I probably will wait for a few more weeks before I trust their lunch buffet, but I will definately get a carry-out pie soon.

RM, you were right.

(you can cut out the above and enlarge it and give it to MrsRM whenever she doubts your greatness)

OK-a half single pizza, no salad and a few noodles does not a lunch buffet make.  The pizza was OK, but more deep dish then Chicago Style, as the crust was bready, not biscuit like.  Skip the lunch buffet and carry out a pie for dinner.

I hate to say it, I HATE TO SAY THIS:

...but Mazzio's lunch buffet (when I am forced with a group to go there) is a better deal.  At least they have some lettuce and more than one thing to choose from!

I know, kind of like saying you like MillerCoorsBud Light.

I have to admit that being able to get a salad (of sorts) along with the pizza is nice. Most of the time the salad bar has been reasonably fresh and offered a variety of add-ons.

My Pi was the last Tulsa pizza restaurant that I consider worthy of the expense.  I have fond memories of their pies.  Since frozen pizza at the grocery has improved so much in the last 20 years and is much cheaper than restaurant pizza, I do my pizza meals at home.

After all your alls talking about the place we stopped by last night for a pie.   Very good pie, great yeasty crust, good flavorful toppings on the supreme.  It was worth the wait.  I was only able to put down a slice and a half of the small pizza.  Now I don't have to drive all the way to 111th and Memorial for Chicago pizza.

They were telling us that tomorrow, saturday, they were having their grand opening with the buffet all afternooon and they will be handing out discount coupons at the ballgame at TU.
