Ok, this weekend I went to the BIG gun show with my boss and a couple of the other legal interns. It was hilarious. People dressed up like commandos and British soldiers from the Zulu wars. It was wild.
People were buying guns like crazy. My boss told a gund dealer that he should write Obama a letter thanking him for the boom in sales. The guy got red and started ranting about Obama stealing everyone's guns. We all laughed.
I have to say that gun show look like an episode of My Big Red Neck Wedding or Deliverance. Scary!
My brother in law is a serious hunter from Wisconsin. He hunts and collects guns but isn't interested in the politics associated. He came down here a year ago for one of the "big" gun shows to see about a collectible shotgun. Apparently we have become something of a mecca for "they're gonna take er guns!" shows.
He described it much as you did only he was a little scared at the guys dressed up in commandoe gear walking around with military assault type weapons in the parking lot. He said he would never return to another one.

Well these things draw the anti-government/Ruby Ridge types so what do you expect. Randy Weaver used to come down here to peddle his name and crap. Most of those "comando" types are nothing but wannabe soldiers.
Wow, the ignorance is almost overwhelming.

When I was a kid, my dad took me to a gun show. All I remember that there were a lot of old WWII vets...older gents in those jumpsuits that old guys used to wear when they worked out in the garage.
A few years ago, I was headed for a different event at the fairgrounds and crashed into a gun show. It kind of creeped me out. Something about cranky looking guys with AK-47s that's upsetting.
Personally, I think that everyone who owns a gun should be required to take a gun safety class. Then you could get an "operator's license" for guns, just like we have licenses for people who drive cars, boats, motorcycles, etc. What's the big deal? (Nobody ever feels threatened that we're going to "pry my car from my cold dead fingers" b/c we have licenses.) It could only help cut down on stupid gun accidents.
My son was there with me, a 4 year veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan. He doesn't fit any of the categories that you mentioned, nor do I.
But the gun enthusiasts are very likely correct that the Brady Bill #2 will pass in the near future.
If your hobby was about to be banned, you would probably gladly accept the intrusion?

I've attended several of these shows in the past. At the last one, I picked up an AR15 (evil assault rifle). However, I knew that this show would be an absolute madhouse (and high priced craziness) with people buying what they could before unconstitutional restrictions were placed on the purchasing of firearms so I chose not to attend. Instead, I had an AK47 (again, evil) on order and scheduled to be delivered to a local gun shop for quite a bit less than I'd have had to pay at the gun show.
I'm not a Ruby Ridge/Waco/Commando/Redneck/Military type. I simply enjoy shooting guns, owning them, and having the option to protect myself and my family from those who may wish to come into my house to do us harm. I don't think that makes me a bad person, or some hillbilly redneck anti-government piece of white trash. It just makes me someone who doesn't share the same opinion of those that appear to somehow be superior because they do not like guns. It's strange, I don't get it.
Well, if my hobby were collecting cars, I would need a drivers license AND a tag, renewable at regular intervals. I would need to be over the age of 16. And I still wouldn't be allowed to drive a semi-truck...some picky rule about safety, I think.
From what I understand, the original Brady Bill had no teeth b/c of how "assault rifle" was defined. I don't remember the details, but I remember thinking...hmmm...that doesn't really achieve anything. Everyone can still buy the same guns....

So you think that the average person (passing NICS checks) should not be allowed to own an 'assault rifle'? What does 'assault rifle' mean anyways? Rifles that hold more than one round? Those with 'barrel shrouds'?
I don't see any logical reason to outlaw or ban so-called 'assault rifles' so your input is valuable to me, in all seriousness.

and what a fine job they've done too, protecting us from warrant-less searches, warrant-less wiretaps, no-knock home invasions, racial profiling, DUI checkpoints & getting pulled over on the freeway for 'looking suspicious'.
'marxist' police state. last time i checked Karl Marx was never a head of state.
you are smarter than that, but you don't wanna say Gestapo. You just want to keep throwing around idiotic buzzwords that make no sense.
HELP UNDER ATTACK BY COMMIE NAZIS!
'gestapo', 'truth police', 'community organizer' whatever you want to call it same difference.
Marx was never a Cuban leader, but Cuba is a Marxist regime.
How gullible are you guys? They've been advertising to "buy your gun before the new law changes" for at least a couple of decades! Sometimes they use slightly changed verbage to make it sound like "this time they're really coming to get your guns!" but its allways the same pitch. The original poster is right. Obama being elected is a windfall for gun shows in Okieville.
I listened to Hannity today on KRMG for a few minutes for my monthly reminder of what my community is really like and to make note of advertisers to avoid. Hell, I almost went to the gun store myself!
By the way this thread started to read it would seem as the poster was saying he was not happy such a large and well attendened event was taking place on a regular interval in his city.
As members of this Tulsa Now! forum I think iot would be wise to actually think about the "tone" a posting will have and its possible impact on visitors to our city (via this forum).
Guns? Iam all for 'em.

So you think Inteller should perhaps tone it down a bit? Agreed. Otherwise we're likely to lose a lot of good community organizers.

Only if you wished to drive your collection around. [:P] Being a blind (legally) person might limit me from driving a car but it doesn't limit me from collecting them. [:o)]
I have a question.
Are handguns primarily intended to shoot humans?
My OP was not that I was unhappy such an event was taking place in Tulsa. I have learned about guns mainly from the lawyer I work for. He has a lot of them and they are constantly coming into the office from his purchases. Additionally, he, his wife, and a lot of the staff have concealed carry permits and carry guns. I don't have a problem with them and can understand why a person would want one. Especially in the larger states where police response times are hindered by distance.
My problem is with the whack jobs who were basically yelling "Get your guns before Obama does!" and then charging an arm and a leg for them. It was just strange.
I don't know if Obama is going to pass restrictive gun laws, but I will parrot what my boss said. The Democrats got theirs asses kicked in 1994 by the "gun vote." He thinks there probably be some sort of restrictions like closing "the gun show loophole." But does not believe that there will be an outright ban.
He has bought a lot of ammo though.

Handguns are used for shooting hands.
I hear monkeys have hands too.
Cool. Welcome to Oklahoma! The all RED state! GUN SHOW! GUN SHOW! GUN SHOW! MOOOOORE GUN SHOW!
It's who we are. Were the last of the cowboys and Indians here in Oklahoma.
I wonder if we have some payback coming to our state? We need (have to) keep those arenas and exhibition halls scheduled and full...please.
I am a proud Oklahoman and thas not always easy or popular.
I agree with Inteller on his statement about the Ricky Recon types between us and marxism...guns are good...makes the agressor stop and think. ( I have now agreed w/ Inteller twice since being on this forum)

As an unabashed gun lover (and one time member of the GOA) you are talking complete and utter horse****.
A stalinist government would crush any insurrection like bugs. They have tanks, bombers, helicopters, and many other things we simply don't possess. Get out of the 1800s. You wouldn't be able to accomplish anything you couldn't do by packing off into the woods and building yourself a one room shack ala Ted Kaczynski.
Why gun owners can't just admit that they like to shoot the ****ing things, I'll never get. It's gotta be some kind of "if it weren't for our guns, we wouldn't live in a free country" bs.

hahaha....I guess you have never heard of guerilla war fare. I guess you also think that all parts of the military would be loyal to the dictatorship. furthermore, I guess you've never seen the mini vulcans and other war machines in the hands of private individuals. there is enough ordinance in the hands of private individuals in this country to rival militaries in 3rd world countries.
Watch some Jericho reruns sometime, that's pretty much how its going to play out.

oo, oo, oo, me, me, me
I just don't get to the range to kill me some wild paper targets as much as I'd like.
RM, yes, they are to shoot humans if that is your intended target. They are also to shoot cans, paper, hay bales, bottles, etc. They were built to replace bow and arrow. I've shot bow and arrow at the wiley paper target too...I like guns better.

First, get your anti-paranoia prescription refilled. Second, assuming such an event were to occur, it will be the every day citizen who stands up to fight. Do you really believe the minutemen of old or even the soldiers that fought the civil war would in today's world be hanging around gun shows dressed like Rambo?

In your fantasies.
If we had a stalinist government that didn't give a ****, they'd put you down in a heartbeat. Your minigun and BAR are useless against tanks. Your AK might breach the ceramic armor we're equipping our soldiers with now.
Iraq wouldn't be an issue if we were willing to kill civilians with complete impunity.
Now, maybe if you could get the largest part of the army and air force, you might stand a chance until they decided to start dropping the MOABs (and possibly start using davy crocketts on your donkey..if they really don't give a **** and had control of the media, they wouldn't hesitate to break out the tactical nukes..what do they care if they leave part of a city uninhabitable for 20 or 30 years? Your insurrection has already made it useless to them)
