Anyone else ever play?
I got invited to a party at a friend's house yesterday which revolved around a Bocce Ball tournament. Great fun, I'd never played before and was only vaguely aware such a game existed.
I think it would be great to get a "league" of sorts going down in Riverparks, or at the croquet lawn at LaFortune Park.

I've played before but it's generally only popular amongst the AARP crowd.
pretty fun game, i play with friends once a year when im in denver.. we tend to let drinking interfere though. maybe that wouldnt be too good for league play, but it never stopped bowlers did it?
zach
I'd definitely play Bocce, though I think I'm better at Petanque. (French version, slightly different game.) Quite fun...and not an AARP member in sight!
Much like bowling, in that drinking improves your game...right up to the point where it hurts your game!
Bob Stoops is an expert....
Whilst in Chicago, I was privileged to take part in the Bocce for Bad Bowels fundraiser and tournament. (//%22http://gapersblock.com/slowdown/archives/2008/09/06/#031597%22) Don't laugh. It really does exist.
I'd be happy to partake in a bit of Tulsabocce. Of course, I suck at it, but that's never stopped me before. PM me and I'll show up.

Think you could talk the missus into it as well?
Could we do a TulsaNow fundraiser or something? Like get the Vision Builders warehouse and have Parbuster put down artificial turf and have a tournament. With beer.
I'd totally be in!

I think I could talk him into it!
I play and have a court set up in my backyard (although, it's grass instead of sand). It's always a hit when family visits.
And folks of all ages play, much to the dismay of Sgrizzle.

Tourney at Wilburs!!!!
Bocce is an excellent social game. Bocce was somewhat of a family tradition for us. My Nona's hood had two small dirt fields near the main square where you could always find a game; the convenience store owner always had a set of balls for use...my brothers and I would go play when bored. Family's would play each other for bragging rights in the hood.
It gets really fun when you start making up conditions to play by like increasing the distance of the pitch, throwing over the head, drunk and blind-folded, speed tossing (three balls with 5-7 seconds), or combat bocce where multiple games are crossing each other...
There's a restaurant in The Hill in St. Louis that have bocce tournies with regularity. I hear the turn-out was always fairly significant.
I actually have a cheap bocce set I keep in my trunk in case I happen on a social gathering. The new park downtown appears perfect for such a tournament. Call the time and I'll show and bring my set!!! Someone pitch in to bring the small tables and chairs and wine and we'll call it an event!

I didn't say it was ONLY certain ages, just more popular with the AARP crowd.
You've got your membership, right?
[:D]
I have a Bocce set too...though I don't carry it around in the trunk (or, in my case, the boot).
Any idea if any of the large sports retailers in town carry quality bocce sets? My friends gave away an Eddie Bauer bocce set to the overall winner on Sunday. That was pretty cool.

I picked mine up at Target though I wouldn't exactly call it quality. I think I recall seeing an Eddie Bauer set there. With that said, I've had mine for at least 5 years so I'm not exactly current on Bocce supply.
Sooo? Who's up for a TulsaNow Bocce tourny? How about a $20 entry fee to support TulsaNow or some other cause like RiverParks or to the organization of choice?

Yes. I know Academy has them.
We got ours at Big Lots of all places!
I have a set in the attic...use them all the time..........totally kidding.
Badmitton...now thats the backyard game!
Spontaneous Acts of Bocce!
When: Thurs, Nov 13, 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Where: The new Centennial Green Park Thing, Downtown at 6th and Main
If you have a set of bocce balls, bring them. A couple of us will be there, and we'll bring two sets of balls. Whoever shows up is welcome to join in and play. If you don't want to play, come to cheer, jeer, chew the fat, or whatever.
Weather should be perfect. See you there.
Damn. Can we try on a weekend sometime? I'd be all up in that if the timing was better.
Sounds pretty cool. I'd be up for a weekend sometime. Might bring a little life to downtown during the weekend days...
This one's going to happen tomorrow (even if just a few of us show up), but there's no reason why we can't do the next one on a weekend.
If only I worked downtown. I play a mean game of bocce and have the heavy set of balls. One handed sports (and hence one free for beer) are kind of my thing.

I have the same set of those. But for sports, I can easily use two hands with mine. Fortunately I dont drink beer.
From the TN Newsletter:
Spontaneous Acts of Bocce – Thurs, 11/13
Take one new downtown greenspace, add a couple sets of bocce balls, some gorgeous autumn weather, and a last-minute invitation. What do you get? We have no idea, but we hope you'll join us for a Spontaneous Act of Bocce! At least a handful of TulsaNow folks will be there to challenge each other to a completely incompetent, unofficial, non-competitive, we're-not-even-totally-sure-of-the-rules game of bocce. Just like the Italians play, except without the skills or the wine.
Stop by to play, say howdy, or just to kibitz.
WHAT: Spontaneous Acts of Bocce
WHEN: Thurs, 11/13, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM
WHERE: The new Centennial Green Park, downtown at 6th and Main
MORE INFO: If you show up, we'll see you there!
How'd it go? Get any audience?
We had 4 dedicated players plus some extra TulsaNow folks who dropped by to say hello.
You wouldn't believe the rubbernecking! Every time we looked up, people were gawking at us. "Look! People doing something interesting in a downtown park!...they seem to be laughing and having fun. Is this allowed?"
Nothing like people in their dress clothes throwing balls around to get folks attention, I guess.
It was a hoot. Cannon Fodder stopped by long enough to tell us what to do with our balls. (And to reinterate that his were heavier.) (What is it about this game...and the way it makes some guys talk?)
If anyone wonders why there's now a deep footprint in the mud at the new park, I have no comment except to say that it's a wonder TulsaMini didn't lose a shoe!
I left several at the grand opening celebration, I'm surprised no-one lost a ball. I'm guessing they had to use a lot of heavy equipment to manuever the tree in and it will take awhile for everything to settle.
The balls they presented were of adequate size, by the density and impressiveness of their balls was much lesser than my own. My balls are so heavy they surely would have destroyed the premises. Seriously, I'd say each one of my balls is 4 lbs easy. Sometimes, when my wife plays with them she has to take a break because it's a workout.
True statements. The bocce ball set I have is very heavy.
/behold the 10 year old within all of us
Wished I could have joined in. My job would rule without clients doing stupid things in sometimes far flung places. Assuming, of course, I would still get paid.
How about some Black Friday Bocce? Anyone?
Too busy shopping.
Sucker. [:P]
I am playing golf in the annual Will Rogers Turkey Bowl Classic. Tell your husband to play...
