From the University to all students. I thought you all might be interested.
Two incidents on the TU campus Friday serve as a reminder that members of the campus community should be vigilant about being aware of their surroundings and immediately reporting suspicious behavior.
In the first incident, a University School student was walking along 4th Street to school Friday morning when a man in a green car called to her and asked her to come closer. The student immediately ran to the school and reported the incident. There was no physical contact with the student. A short time later, a TU student was walking along a sidewalk along 4th Street when she was accosted and inappropriately touched by an unknown male. The male then fled on foot. She was not injured and immediately reported the incident to authorities.
These cases, which are unrelated, are under active investigation by Tulsa Police Department and TU Campus Security.
Friday's incidents follow an assault and attempted robbery on campus at night near the University Square Apartments in August. The student sustained minor injuries but was able to fend off her attacker, who fled on foot.
The University is committed to maintaining a safe campus and sharing information that contributes to a secure environment. TU officials ask students to immediately report suspicious activities to Campus Security at 631-5555. Upon receipt of a call, campus security is dispatched immediately to the site of the complaint, and officers will take the appropriate action or contact the proper agency. Calls placed from campus extensions to Tulsa's 911 enhanced emergency system are monitored by TU campus security, who will respond to campus calls.
Members of the campus community should be aware of the more than 30 "blue light" emergency call boxes placed in strategic locations on the campus grounds. (For location of these phones, visit www.utulsa.edu/security/bluelight.) There also are more than 30 emergency telephones located inside campus buildings. This emergency phone system will immediately connect to the campus security, which will dispatch an officer to that location. TU security officers patrol campus 24 hours a day and each shift also includes an off-duty Tulsa Police Department officer.
Didnt TU recently install a loudspeaker system for the purpose of warning students when school shooters were roaming the campus?
I can hardly keep a straight face when describing that to visitors.
I'm a bit "meh" about the first "incident" since that could've just been someone wanting directions.
Directions? From a kid? That's the TU school.
There was also an incident (a hush-hush type) that occurred when school opened. Apparently there were some drug dealers visiting one of the frat houses, and I have no idea what the incident was, but they are not allowed to have parties and alcohol this semester.
Go a few blocks west and this is all part of a normal day.
Thats not true.

Nothing that causes me to raise an eyebrow. Those incidents are repeated constantly all over everywhere.
Near any school you will have people that talk to the children and smart kids that report the "incident" (which was thankfully a non-incident and may very well have been noting. I was reported for "watching" kids going in to my sons school earlier this year - I dropped him off and went around the corner to watch my own son!). At any apartment complex you will have cars broken into and other incidents and unfortunately women will occasional be inappropriately touched.
These are not acceptable, but if these incidents were cause for a security bulletin then security around TU has been doing a pretty good job.

Buy a scanner at Radio Shack and hear what the news doesn't tell you is going on...
Did you hear the friday before last and the 14 rounds shot off at 21st and Garnett by the Asian Crips? How many car chases last night was aired on the news today?
Already have one, thanks.

Why thank you, I'm sure you'll earn one someday.
I am intrigued by the scanner talk. Why wouldn't these incidents be reported on the news anyway?
On another note...I was listening to talk by some people who are very anti Hispanics and they firmly believe that most of our crime and the rise in crime has a lot to do with the labourers (legal and illegal) that we see around Tulsa now.

Sometimes it's almost routine, just as not every traffic accident or car chase makes the news either in print or on TV. Sometimes it's because they didnt get a response from police to "flesh-out" the story.

That and they don't have the staff to keep up. On weekends there might not be anyone on the job to send someone out. I was actually told that one time when I asked one of the PJs why they didn't cover it...

I think our former KKKFAQ morning host played up these fears. I don't hear this garbage as much now that he is gone.

Why? So we could all live in paranoid fear, and have our news focus soley on miscreants? Newscasts would have to double or triple in length if you wanted to hear about every single assault which happens in a 24 hour period in the area.
Many small towns publish the daily police blotter. In a city the size of Tulsa, I can't even begin to imagine how many calls they field a day.

They could cover more local news if they would leave the national news to the national news. maybe stop trying to be the Entertainment Tonight Show also
For those who want more bad news and no feature stories, they can buy a police scanner...

We could really do without the doctor-on-call & vet-on-call.
"Next we have a caller from Tulsa...Tulsa?...are you there Tulsa?...Tulsa?"
It annoys me everytime!!
I was on campus last Friday & heard that there was some death threat left in cut-out letters on a table in the restaurant.
Racial slurs, etc...
Never heard anything about that on the news!

Some of those questions on "Doctor on Call" are amazing.

Maybe it was a word jumble.

Now you know why they have their own police departments. Easier to keep rapes and other violence quiet.

Except that the campus police blotter is posted in the campus newspaper.

Not everything makes the blotter.
Look how much was sanitized at OU when the engineering student was stopped from bringing a bomb into the stadium in 2005, or for that matter, search DOE reports on colleges under-reporting serious crimes.

Sometime there are other "Catch 22's" as well.
Most crime reporting is formatted with the police speaking as the authority, but their union discourages officers from commenting on incidents where they might be found at-fault.
For instance, how much did you read/hear about the 4-year old hit by the police car Thursday on the west side near Bowen and Rosedale?
No interview, no story. Lazy journalism, IMHO.
OMG the doctor on call is so stupid. Really, doesn't he always just say, "You should go to your doctor."

The "Doctor on Call" is one of my favorite segments. It's hilarious to see what people call in with.
The Intrusion Alert System apparently didnt work when a pair of armed robbers committed at least two armed robberies there Thursday night.
The university did not issue an alert until 10:27 the following morning:
Armed robbers hold up two TU students in separate incidents

Tulsa police responded Thursday to two armed robberies of University of Tulsa students, university officials said.
A student reported that he'd been ordered to the ground at gunpoint by two men near the Norman Village apartments on campus around 6:15 p.m., according to a campus alert emailed Friday morning. The assailants fled south with the student's belongings.
A second armed robbery was reported off campus at 11th Street and Pittsburg Avenue around the same time. The victim was also a TU student.
