This is an excerpt from the CBS interview with Katie Couric:
quote:
COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and on our other side, the land– boundary that we have with– Canada. It– it's funny that a comment like that was– kind of made to– cari– I don't know, you know? Reporters–
COURIC: Mock?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.
COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.
PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our– our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia–
COURIC: Have you ever been involved with any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth. We– we do– it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is– from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to– to our state.
(in my best Will Farrell doing Alex Trebek on Jeopardy voice)....Wow.
Hey, at least she knows where Russia is on a map. Sadly, that makes her smarter than most Americans. And I'm thinking smarter than the current president.[;)]

How 'bout the Sarah Palin lie patrol?...

So for the record, let it be known that the candidate for vice-president for the GOP is a compulsive, repetitive, demonstrable liar. If you follow the links, here is the proof. I repeat: proof:
- She has lied about the Bridge To Nowhere. She ran for office favoring it, wore a sweatshirt defending it, and only gave it up when the federal congress, Senator McCain in particular, went ballistic. She kept the money anyway and favors funding Don Young's Way, at twice the cost of the original bridge.
- She has lied about her firing of the town librarian and police chief of Wasilla, Alaska.
- She has lied about pressure on Alaska's public safety commissioner to fire her ex-brother-in-law.
- She has lied about her previous statements on climate change.
- She has lied about Alaska's contribution to America's oil and gas production.
- She has lied about when she asked her daughters for their permission for her to run for vice-president.
- She has lied about the actual progress in constructing a natural gas pipeline from Alaska.
- She has lied about Obama's position on habeas corpus.
- She has lied about her alleged tolerance of homosexuality.
- She has lied about the use or non-use of a TelePrompter at the St Paul convention.
- She has lied about her alleged pay-cut as mayor of Wasilla.
- She has lied about what Alaska's state scientists concluded about the health of the polar bear population in Alaska.
You cannot trust a word she says. On anything.
I saw the interview on TV tonight. God, Palin is just fjucking awful.
She was trying to BS her way through answers without having the brain power to do it.
There's nothing worse than seeing someone bring a knife to a gunfight.
wow.
where's the cabal?
okay, i'll play.
that liberal Katie Couric, who does she think she is...asking questions!?
Those were UNFAIR questions!
I mean why should the Governor of Alaska know who the current President of Russia is?!
What does that have to do w/ being VP?
NOTHING!
She was SET UP!
Obama gets his questions fed to him before he gets asked the TOUGH QUESTIONS!
GO SARAH, WE LOVE YOUR GLASSES GIRL! YOU GO GIRL, YOU GO!
Yawn...
I felt sorry for her. That interview was a trainwreck.
I have written before that McCain will probably lose this election, but will lose with respect.
Palin won't. I feel she will be the butt of jokes just like Dan Quayle was for years later.

Maybe.
And, maybe she'll be Vice President of the United States while you're still picking up roadside litter.
And, picking up McCain-Palin Campaign signs, too?

I don't pick up signs during election season. I will wait until after the election and then pick up any illegal signs from any candidate or business.
Don't change the topic to me. The focus is Palin here.

I don't think it was quite a train wreck, but I think she's very poorly spoken, but after 8 years I'm used to that. I'm sure nerves play a part in that too.
The interview was pretty much fair except the question when she asked for "specific" proposals of John McCain which was just a gotcha.
I don't think any VP candidate could prepare for questions like that. I doubt Biden would do so well if asked the same question about Obama.

It is a "gotcha" but it's such an obvious one it's fair because it's a real issue McCain should have to answer to. I don't blame her so much for that as her handlers who really should have prepared her for that question. Maybe they did and she lost her pat answer due to nerves.
My bigger issue was that she claimed that she spoke with Kissenger about if he agreed with McCain on his stance of not negotiating with Ahmadinejad. She claimed that Kissenger agreed, CBS checked back with Kissenger and he said that was untrue, that he did agree with negotiating with Ahmadinejad without preconditions. She lied. Again.

You are correct, it's a relevant issue and a question McCain should have to answer, not her. Gotcha questions provide no value to anyone except PDS sufferers.
I'll ask you again, how do you think Biden would fair with the same question?

Don't make me dig up the quotes. She did not make the definitive statement you claim.
There was no lie. Get over yourself.

If she can talk up the ticket and support her running mate and her potential administration then she needs to be able to defend it and answer for it as well.
If she can't even do that how can she possibly be ready to handle the presidency.
Avoid the specifics and barf out a platitude. There's the old swake I've come to know and love...
Would answering an unanswerable question serve to talk up the ticket?
At least McCain/Palin are on the same page, like it or not.
Obama/Biden have been making mutually contradictory statements for weeks now (Coal plants, AIG bailout, etc) about several issues.
Maybe the debate tonight should have been between Obama and Biden?

Hey, I'll be honest, I don't care for Biden. I think overall big labor is harmful to it's members and the nation as a whole and he's all about big labor. She's worse, and she and McCain (at least the version of McCain that existed 18 months ago) agree on almost nothing. Who can tell what McCain believes today, his own wife doesn't know his position on abortion.

You forgot to add that Andrew Sullivan is a conservative commentator.
You changed my mind Ruf, I'm voting for the fellow with the nicotine addiction, but I plan on supporting the McCain family when I go to Phoenix by drinking lots of Anheiser-Busch products.
I heard interesting commentary on CNN yesterday (I think Ed Rollins?), who said that McCain has basically destroyed Palin by keeping her away from the press for so long. His analogy was that, when a pitcher has a bad game, you send them right back in there; otherwise, you have a pitcher who loses confidence. By keeping her hidden from view, McCain's campaign was basically saying, even though I chose you as my running mate, you are incapable of responding to the media. I haven't seen the entire Couric interview, but from what I have seen, Palin definitely looked like someone without any confidence.
Look no further than Biden if you want a reason why VP candidates shouldn't have dominant media coverage. What help has he been to Obama thus far?
For all the Dan Quayle "potatoe" heads - Quayle DID serve as VP. Someone named H. Ross Perot queered the election in '92, not Quayle.

Wasn't that
YOU in the Size 46 shorts picking up the
NO RIVER TAX signs along 71st Street, during the
FAILED Kaiser River Tax
campaign?
[:O]
Hey Conan, If we could look into McCrazies personal health records, do you think we'd get more comfortable about Mrs. Todd Palin?
You don't need to answer that, it's a rhetorical question.[8D]
