Mostly recent but I have to mention Nelsons, of course. Also:
Rick's Cafe American
Elephant Bar (just heard)
Bennigans
Steak and Ale
The Flying Roll
Jimmy's Egg (Will become Jamil's)
What else?
Rick's moved recently.

Where do these dead restaurants go to get bailed out?

Good to know on Ricks. Legends BBQ is also closed.
Steak Stuffers never really attracted me much. Their larger sandwiches seem kinda high priced for lunch and they aren't open for dinner or on Weekends I don't think.

Which Legends? The one by Fox 23? I was just there about three weeks ago and they didn't seem to be hurtin' for customers.
If that's the case, that stinks. I loved going there for special.

Yeah that one. Maybe they were just closed for the weekend or something, but I didn't see any tables near the window.
When did Jimmy's Egg close? That places always seemed to do a great business.

They did great business. Word around the campfire is they are moving to 41st & Peoria, not sure which corner or if it would be new construction.

Another one is supposed to open on the east side of 41st Peoria. However,I think there is still one around 31st and Garnett.
still doesn't make sense that Jamil's is moving there when Jimmy's is leaving because of the highway[xx(]
Had Steak Stuffers. Seemed about like this to me:

Don't know if it's just me, but once I found out they used canned cheese sauce on their sandwiches, it took the 'good' out of the review I would have given it.
My suggestion; forgot this post, don't sit in the back where they keep the bulk canned stock and enjoy.
[:D]
Well, now wait a minute....
This is a VERY nice family from Philly...
He had several of these sucessfully in PA and moved here 20+ yrs ago to start one here on Brookside and had to move when Albertsons was built...Also go look @ his Health Dep. record, quite clean and the family is first class...
He also moved here to raise horses on his farm in Skiatook
As I understand it they will move to the old Cap D's around 51st and Memorial...
And by the way, it would not be a real "Philly" if it weren't covered with "real" Cheese Wiz...
It is WELL KNOWN that real Phillys have Cheese Wiz...or a generic equiv. I might guess...
YUM... I want one NOW !!!!
Maybe tomorrow....

Its been a year or so since I have been to Steak Stuffers, the guy that owns it is a great person. I have to say though when he stopped "importing" his bread from the east coast to save money the "quality" of the sandwiches wind down considerably. The failure of his second location and the move didn't help I am sure. Anyway I will have to stop in and get one in awhile.
Back on topic, I have not been following closings closely lately but I need to make a run through my lists and update.

Some authetic philly places use Cheez Whiz. It is a matter of debate in Philly as well. My problem was their meat. Bland, flavorless and dry.
Hey Steak Stuffers was good enough for Rudy and Altruism Suffers.
Phat Philly's uses cheese wiz. I guess I'm going to eat there for lunch. 11th & Detroit
As far as I know the second unit did not "fail" as such .... It was busy from the git go but he is an older fella and did not want to run 2 after all...
The family is close and they have a great time running the one together(husband, wife, son daughter in-law and 2 grandkids in the summer..)...
And the move had no effect and the place was busier than ever after the move to I-44...
Cant say about the bread but the owner is picky about quality and prep, so I would hope the bread is locally baked to his specs....
I find it most tasty ..
I order mine with steak , mushrooms, bell pepper onion and cheese wiz....
You can pick other cheeses and the chicken breast (as opposed to the shredded chicken, which is fine) is wonderful with provolone....

God I couldn't agree with you more.
The only thing I don't like about Phat's is the photo lineup of the fatties or fatties in training that have eaten 7 phillies in one sitting.
What kind of fat, fattie with no self respect thinks, "Geeez, I think I can eat me 6 of them there sammiches..." and then sit there long enought to have their picture taken.
Probably the same type of person that eats that Texas toast you buy in the supermarket that tastes like someone applied butter to the bread with a power sprayer.

I like that stuff too!
The Steak Stuffers location in Broken Arrow (81st and 145th) did good business, but the owner (George VanWyck) told me he had trouble finding the kind of help that could run the restaurant to his standards in his absence.
George is partly responsible for getting me involved in neighborhood issues and zoning. When my wife and I were first married, we lived in the Marella Apartments on Riverside, and we'd sometimes walk to 39th & Peoria to eat at Steak Stuffers. (Mmmmm.... corn fritters.)
The restaurant was in a typical Brookside store front, right on Peoria. Albertson's included the site of the store in their PUD. (Coney I-lander refused to sell.) The neighborhood organized to fight the new store, in part because it meant removing several small businesses and a couple of Brookside-style commercial buildings and replacing them with parking spaces -- spaces which I have never, in 16 years, seen occupied.

One of those pictured is the owner and another one is his mom.
I ate lunch at Rick's new location last week! The ole St. Michael's Alley never looked so bright. There's a new bar with lots of wood where the cozy booths used to be. Kitchen still open to front dining room. Several 'french doors' on the entrance wall, letting in the outside light.
I can still remember delivering the Tulsa Tribune to St. Michael's Alley in the early 70's. I'd open the door, and couldn't see a thing because my eyes could not adjust to the darkness quickly enough. Lot of memories of my old neighborhood and the 'backside' of Ranch Acres Shopping Center; Liquor Store, Laundry Mat, Pool Hall, Mart Trophy. Anybody remember when the 'Safeway' burned?
Does anyone know if the chef/owner of El Rey is going to open anywhere else?
They had a restaurant at 21st & Garnett...but it just seemed to be the wrong location for them. The food was a decent price, and was awesome. As an added benefit they made the best cheesecake in Tulsa! I had promised my hubby that I'd get him one for his b-day and now they've closed!
Just wondering...
Thanks!

Just ate there the other night myself - excellent service, excellent food, polished up real nice.

A friend went right after it opened, swore he would not return. I will aways give a second shot esp if it's new. Rick Kamp has always turned up winners, I couldn't imagine it being that jacked up.
TGIF is going downhill faster than a SaopBox Durby car. I also noticed that "Chicago's" is also slipping, It's not the place it was before. Times change I guess.
Another restaurant in Owasso closes.

Cold Stone Creamery gone.....is that a nationwide thing?
Was Cold Stone in Bixby near Starworld? I guess it could not keep up with Marble Slab in the area.

Cold Stone was there and 71st and Memorial. The one on 71st has a note on it from the landlord for back-rent due. I think they picked two high-rent locations expecting traffic would cover for it. I think according to the note they were paying around $3-4,000 a month for the 71st one. That strip center has had a pretty high turnover rate and almost always has at least one vacancy.
Reminds me of the "Custard Craze!" of the Early 2000's.
Maggie Moos has somehow survived at King's Pointe at 61st & Yale. I don't see how at $5 a pop.

there is a marble slab in the area? News to me....and probably most other people. Sounds like they are doing a poor job of advertising...and certainly wasn't a factor of CSC going out of business.
Come to find out it was just the local franchise....but it is a larger problem for CSC nationwide.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121321718319265569-search.html?KEYWORDS=cold+stone+creamery&COLLECTION=wsjie/6month
I wanted to say this was a sign of the TUlsa market, but this appears to just be an abberation with a particular franchise. Sounds like they are really poorly run. The owners of the Tulsa franchise -did- live nearby their Bixby location....but considering they recently had a big garage sale, I'm betting their home will be on the market soon if they are like the other franchisees in that article.
The 71st St location is/was AWFUL. There is a reason that shopping center has high turn over....it is a ***** to get in and out of. Unless you are going to starbucks there isn't much reason to go in there. I think the CSC location suffered there because the starbucks drive thru flow provided contention with parking at their store front. I was recently at a KC starbucks that was as big as that entire shopping strip mall. Starbucks should buy the whole thing, knock out the walls, and build a super store. The KC SB store I was in was the most radical Starbucks you have ever seen. HUGE seating area...and you could find secluded corners to just chill out and sip coffee.
Why did the Golden Drumsticks die. They had the best fried chicken I've ever had.
I've been going to Steak Stuffers for years. I'm kind of glad they are moving because I don't like their current location. Their sandwiches are really good and I think the bread is fresh and the cheese is good. Their corn fries rock! (Charlie's Chicken has corn fritters, which are similar, but they suck.)
George and his family are super friendly. I will continue to follow them anywhere they move.
The Coney Islander at 71st & Memorial by Burlington Coat Factory is finally closed for good. They were closed down temporarily several times by the health department. 2 times that I know of from signs on the door, and another time a friend told me. I wouldn't go back now anyway. What a shame. At least there's still the location on Brookside and by the AMC.
There are also Coney Islanders in Jenks, across the street from TU, several knockoffs around the area, and the original in downtown.
I just noticed but am not sure last night drove by AL'S BISTRO all the lights and sign were off...I never saw more than 3 cars in the lot at once at that place and most of the staff were always out front smoking..shame too looks like he put some dough into that place..could have been nice....
Dont forget the I-Landers in BA and on Admiral where us old timers remember an A&W Rootbeer "stand" once stood.

Pretty sure they're still open.. Current Urban Tulsa has an ad for their new Sunday brunch.

SPEEDY GONZALES should be opening in the next week or so. They're relocating from 22nd & Sheridan.
Looks like the other shoe dropped for Cold Stone. I noticed a bunch of papers taped to the windows at the 101st and Memorial location during a Bueno run, and they said the local franchisee had filed for bankruptcy. Ouch. If Cold Stone gives its franchisees as raw a deal as the WSJ claims, this rough recession could kill off much or all of the chain.

Sorry..... Have never had their ice-cream... but kinda like the website.
Wonder what the franchise price is..?
This would do well on the Boardwalk in Venice CA or maybe even next to a multi tasked outdoor venue.
Noticed the Johnnies Burger place @ I44 & Harvard has closed. They sure made a good burger & onion rings. I know they had expansion plans (Owasso) but looks like they`re all gone from Tulsa. Guess I`ll get my 6$ burgers at Rons
The Legends in Owasso is still going strong. As is the El Fogon. Surprisingly, Hardens Hamburgers too.
I remember a chain called "The Hungry Pelican" when I first moved to Tulsa in 1981. Good fried okra, can't remember too much else about it.

I liked Johnnie's too. I thought they were always doing good business there, enough to stay open at least.
