Sullivan Campaigning at Taxpayer Expense, Oliver Charges
Recent Mass Mailing Called "Outrageous"
Tulsa, OK – First District Congressman John Sullivan is campaigning at public expense and should reimburse taxpayers, challenger Georgianna Oliver said Monday.
"Incumbent members of Congress have a long history of abusing their free mailing and free travel privledges, but John Sullivan is pushing that abuse to new heights. Since he's been in Congress, according to official U.S. House of Representatives records, Sullivan has billed taxpayers more than $600,000 to send out mail, " Oliver said.
The Democratic nominee cited two recent examples of Sullivan campaigning at public expense. She sharply criticized Sullavan for a recent mass mailing, and a flight to Washington.
"The mass mailing was outrageous," Oliver said. "It's a slick campaign piece written, designed, printed, and mailed at taxpayer expense. It also hit mail boxes 82 days before the general election, violating at the very least the spirit of regulations prohibiting taxpayer-funded mail within 90 days of an election."
Oliver called on Sullivan to immediately disclose the cost to taxpayers and to reimburse the U.S. Treasury."I suspect this big, full-color mail piece was sent to at least 200,000 households. That would cost my campaign $100,000. It would cost the same for Sullivan's campaign, but he just gave the bill to taxpayers," Oliver said.
"Adding insult to injury, the mailer brags about how Sullivan is working for lower gas prices and comprehensive energy solutions while his record in Congress shows exactly the opposite," Oliver said. "In fact, Sullivan voted against renewable energy programs, tax incentives, and against legislation to impose stiff penalties on gasoline gouging. He's spending taxpayer money on a mailing and in it, he doesn't tell the truth," Oliver said.
Oliver continued, "We do need a comprehensive national energy policy including offshore drilling, but Sullivan's interest in this issue is 'Johnny come lately.' He's been in Congress for nearly seven years and has taken more than $400,000 in contributions from the oil and gas industry."
"Why this sudden interest in energy policy?" Oliver asked. "Obviously, this is a taxpayer-funded campaign ploy."
Oliver also hit Sullivan for what she called a "partisan protest trip" to Washington last week.
Sullivan flew to Washington and back to take part in a Republican protest on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives during the August recess.
"What did that cost taxpayers?" Oliver asked. "He got publicity and taxpayers got the bill." Oliver continued, "We need a comprehensive, national energy policy not. In order to achieve one, we have to set partisan politics aside. Sullivan's publicity stunt does just the opposite."
Oliver said, if elected, she would push for strict limitations on taxpayer-funded mailings and a national energy policy to maximize domestic oil production, alternative energy sources, higher fuel economy standards, and regulation of oil market speculators.
The piece was little over the top. It was such an odd size that it probably cost three times more to mail than a standard letter.
When you are spending taxpayer dollars, it would be wise to be a little more prudent.
Interesting.......
Yawn.
Glad that someone else noticed that Sullivan wastes a lot of our money printing very elaborate full color glossy mailers with bogus surveys like: Do you support John Sullivan's efforts to cut wasteful spending? Yes. No.
His mailers are obvious self promotion pieces aimed at keeping him in office.
How do you spell hypocrite? S U L L I V A N.
Vote for Oliver.
What is Georgianna Oliver like? What are her positions on the issues? I am a true conservative and will NOT be voting for Sullivan. He turned his back on us when he voted for the bailout!! I need to know more about her before I could vote for her, a democrat.

Are you serious? He voted against the bill after voting for it. Does he win your vote now or will he have to have Ms. Oliver morph into Satan himself by distorting her views and refusing to debate her?
Sullivan left DC this afternoon with a ghostly, hanging sound-bite. "25% unemployment". Joe Kelley was asking what he meant by that. No one could find him to clarify.
He needs to answer to this, nothing like creating a whole lot of economic hysteria with a sound bite then jumping on your flight for home.
He might have just lost my vote. If you want to create a recession or depression, keep talking about it and it will happen. This was terribly irresponsible.

I think the republicans in DC are a little besides themselves these days.
There was a time when I was MUCH younger that I might have registerered republican. The party is a shell of what it used to be now. Reminds me of the Democratic party during the Reagan administration and even more recent.
Maybe it's good for the party. They need to detach themselves from the neo-conservatism that has obviously brought this on.

So he had no idea why he voted the way he did or even what he voted on and he deserves to stay? What will it take for Ms. Oliver to win your vote, or is it just a matter - as it is for me - of 'Sully' losing your confidence? Lead, follow, or get out of the way, 'Sully.'

From what I've heard, Oliver labels herself as a 'conservative democrat'. Take from that what you will.
I know Georgianna Oliver. She is very, very conservative for a democrat.
I am voting for her, even gave her a little money and gave an endorsement on her website.
I think she could make a fine congresswoman.

Do not get me wrong: the Democrats are a disaster. If I were a Dem I would be embarassed.
I can't stand either of them. I'll be leaving that part of the ballot blank.

And the Repubs shouldn't be ashamed right now why? Especially those 'fiscal conservatives'. Which seem to be an endangered species these days.

This is one Republican that will be voting for Georgianna Oliver.

Tim,
I knew Sullivan was going to be a water carrier for the GOP and would toe the line 95% of the time with them. He's a "Limbaugh Conservative" of average intelligence which is mostly annoying to me. If there had been a quality Democrat opponent last time who would be along the lines of a Jim Jones or David Boren "conservative" I'd have voted for them likely. The Dems just allowed him to win last time by putting up Genteges.
I met Georgianna Oliver at the Dem booth at the fair when I was there with Karen Keith the opening Saturday, and I was impressed with her.
I was going to vote for Sully again this year as I still do have the feeling Oliver was carpet-bagged in by national interests. However, I gotta say, Sullivan shot down any confidence I had left in him with the statement I mentioned. Honestly, I don't think I can support Sullivan's cluelessness and "go along at any cost" attitude anymore.
I do appreciate what he's accomplished on immigration enforcement in the area, but between that and becoming a sock-puppet for the hospice industry, those have been the only two notable issues for him.
I just don't think I can send him back in good conscience after this gaffe.

I used to party with Sullivan back in the Bishop Kelley days. He was a moron back then. When I moved back to Tulsa I met him for breakfast at Wild Fork regarding some business. I thought the guy must have made a life change for the better since he was elected to public office and all. But while listening to him talk I realized he had actually lost IQ points over the years.
Jim Jones? Ya, he was a good one.
I am voting for Georgianna too. She is one of three democrats that will get my vote this year.

Mr. Burns, were you one of the "SOB's" from BK?
You and I appear to be from the same era, I was a year behind John but went to different "Catlick" school.
I would imagine if the Keatings could have legally exposed Sullivan's juvenile record, Cathy Keating would be our rep now, not John. I've still never figured out how he became the local GOP sweetheart, unless they found the perfect go-along dupe in him.
Nice enough guy, but nice only goes so far.

You know what strikes me as odd? Not one person is even mildly defending 'Sully.' Not one. Guess that means his stupidity is pretty much indefensible.

Yepper I am from that era. You know the era where Bishop Kelley was burned down by three students, fortunately for one student, he was passed out
drunk in the getaway car. [;)]
I went to Booker T. Washington. During high school I dated a girl at Kelley and hung out with her group that included the Sullivan brothers.
With all this talk about the trouble BTW has had this week it made me think back on those Kelley days. I never saw so many people involved with drugs, drinking and violence as I did with that Kelley crew. And, I even grew up on the northside.
I agree, I just don't get how people can vote for him. It is truly astonishing.

I think we've seen enough of Sully. Tulsa is, what, the 50th largest MSA in the country? Are we getting that sort of representation out of him? I don't see it, necessarily. I believe there are also some GOP's tired of the constant "trust me" mantra of the Republican Party.
I wouldn't feel too guilty about voting him out of office, I'm sure he will have a much better paying career on K Street.
According to an inside source, polling numbers show Sullivan's lead diminishing greatly, about to enter single digits or disappear altogether.

Wow.
That would be amazing, if true. But the again, I don't know of *anyone* who's been impressed with Sullivan's performance as a congressman.
First time he voted against the bailout. Second time he voted for it.
I'll say something nice about Sullivan. He saw the light and corrected the error he made on the first vote.
Unfortunately for him and us, he has played a major role in Oklahoma's misguided anti-immigrant crusade that resulted in HB1804. Though he apparently has seen some light on this issue because he is now advocating a guest worker program. I imagine the Chamber of Commerce had a good long talk with him about labor shortages in Oklahoma.
His role in the anti-immigrant crusade has guaranteed that he will always remain in history's Xenophobe column along with the likes of Pete Wilson and Lou Dobbs and scores of minor racists in Oklahoma.
I am voting for Oliver and I imagine she will benefit from the coming Democrat tide but she is no where the quality of a "Dan Boren." Oklahoma needs at least 20 Dan Borens. He is one of just a very small number of first class Oklahoma Democrats.

Sullivan voted against the measure, changed his mind, than voted 'no' finally. Pat Campbell on KFAQ was also making sound like 'Sully' was in the 'Yay' column, but he was not. He voted against the 'bailout.'

Get in touch with her camgaign office and ask if she would sit for an interview. you never know until you ask. I would like to read more about her and if you do the interview then we are all that much more informed. Go for it. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I call Shenninagans on your 'source.' 'About to enter single' is about as precise as zippo! Your 'source' told you this so that when he wins (which 90% of these louses do) he can proclaim a huge comeback, transforming Sullivan into a New Man like he just walked through the fires of hades or something. If he loses his advisers - people like your source - should never work in campaigns or government ever again. It is at least a 90% certainty he will be re-elected.
I remember "Buffy" from college and OIL and there is NO WAY I am voting for her. Granted somehow she has gotten her 1st husband to be pro-Buffy, but knowing the stories I know and the way she has handled her personal life. Forget it.

I like how people register here just to make one inflammatory post on one statement. No chance of it being anyone with vested interests AT ALL.
