Title: Blue Dome Bikes idea
Post by: OurTulsa on August 18, 2008, 12:52:04 PM
Just a thought.

Would a bike sharing program work for the Blue Dome district downtown?

The business owners/City could sponser a program in which multiple bikes were make available in a manner similar to the Riverside bikes to individuals already in the Blue Dome district for dinner just looking for a neat way to experience a larger portion of downtown before and after dinner, or whenever.

The bikes could also be marketed to individuals attending events at BOK, Brady, Cains, or new ballpark as opportunity to connect quicker between lunch/dinner in Blue Dome and a scheduled event (park away from the venue near restaurants).

Of course, walking between the Blue Dome and the BOK and proposed ballpark site is just not that difficult.

Maybe a small bike program around downtown would be better.  I work on the west side of downtown and we often find ourselves ruling out Blue Dome restaurants because we just don't want to get the car out of the garage and drive and walking would eat up half our lunch hour.  A bike available at the Transit Center would make the trek across downtown very easy.
I can imagine parking in the Blue

I would like to see bike sharing downtown period. Not a huge fan of pink bikes but it would be nice if I was in a hurry or going a larger distance.

I think it would work and it would need four or five stations. One close to the civic center/BOK, one in Blue Dome, one in Brady one at OSU or Langston and one at TCC.

They have a bike rental station at the bus station.  I know it's not Blue Dome but one does exist and they aren't pink.

Why?  Just curious?  Have you ridden the bus from that station?

Yes, there is a bus that goes by my job. It takes 45 minutes to get to work (the drive is 10 minutes) but its better than driving on ozone days.

Completely forgot about that program!  Very exciting.  Would like to see it expanded and promoted better downtown.  I read the article when it was published and haven't seen or heard of the program since.

Maybe I didn't read the article thoroughly.  I think I thought the bikes were available only as a package deal with a transit trip?

How about piggy backing off that and making it part of a downtown program with a bike rack near the Blue Dome, in the Brady, near TCC?

Proud of you CP, carry on.

Downtown needs more bike racks!  Perhaps we could sell some of the park benches up at "park bench park" next to Mexicali, and buy some bike racks to spread around town.

Where are the bike racks currently?  Off the top of my head, I can picture bike racks at:  1.)McNellies 2.)the Library.  I know of some gas meters that work well, and a couple good signs (but I don't know if it's legal to chain your bike to them).  I think Sound Pony might have a bike rack...or, at least, I often see bikes parked in front of their building.

The Blue Dome district has a project underway, a bicycle hub that will offer classes, mechanical work, and more.  It should be operational by the first of the year.

"A" bicycle hub does little. Stations all over downtown does a lot.

Will you be able to rent bikes there?  If so, great!  Looking forward.

I really don't know if bike rentals will be available, but I contacted someone intimately involved in the project.  I'm hoping she'll post something here.
