Title: Comprehensive guide to downtown launched.
Post by: Admin on August 08, 2008, 01:18:49 PM
DOWNTOWN IS ALIVE!
TulsaNow, a Non-profit Grassroots Organization, Debuts Tulsa's Only Comprehensive Guide to Downtown called "Downtown Live."

Tulsa, Oklahoma, August 8th, 2008 –TulsaNow and a group of volunteers have debuted their "DowntownLive" project at the Tulsa Press Club. DowntownLive was conceived 6 months ago when a group of concerned citizens expressed their frustrations with the lack of a directory or map of Downtown available to visitors or citizens of the Tulsa area. TulsaNow organized the project and volunteers spent over 1,000 hours canvassing downtown, cataloging every public business inside of the Inner-Dispersal Loop, then compiling the information and creating both a comprehensive website and an easy-to-distribute printed guide. The printed map features an original artistic map created by Artist William Franklin that captures both the physical blocks and streets of Tulsa, as well as the spirit of Tulsa through its vibrant graphic elements. The printed maps will be distributed to businesses around Tulsa within the next few weeks. The website, www.DowntownLive.org, was created in conjunction with Evolution Studios.  It features detailed information on over 200 businesses and features hours, directions, pictures, reviews, ratings and much more.

If you believe in the DowntownLive project, we need volunteers and we need sponsors to cover costs such as printing. Anyone who wants to know more, or just wants to help, should send an email to downtownlive@tulsanow.org

Here is the front of the printed map that we have designed. Will still do some more tweaking, add some more iconic buildings and such.  We wanted to create a map that was unique, fun and funky, something that would grab peoples attention and be enjoyable to use.  We are going to try and see about having large versions, approx 3' x 5' or larger, placed in prominent areas like the BOK Arena. Plus have some at the street Kiosks with "you are here" labels.

I think it turned out to be something really fun and unique for downtown Tulsa. How often have you run across a map that looks like this before? [:P]

We would still like to have more volunteers to take photos of the different places we have listed downtown.  We need both an interior and exterior shot of each place. If you see a place that does not have a pic yet, go for it and submit it for posting on the website.

I really like this aspect of the website. There are so many times I hear about a new place opening downtown and dont remember the address, but if I "see" where it is, I know where it is and can find it easier.

Plus, sometimes people see a place, a door and a name and dont have a clue as to whats inside. Or you hear the name of a restaurant say and it doesnt tell you much about it. With the new downtown guide, you can find the restaurant and it gives you an idea of what kind of place it is. Again, I like to be able to see a pic of the inside for that gives me an idea of what its like. Is it formal dining? A hip, lounge type atmosphere, or a simple eatery type of place. This way you know "whats behind that door".

On each photo is a "google map finder" that you can click on and it then shows where the place is located downtown.

Have fun exploring the website, and let us know of your ideas for making it better. Again, this was a volunteer, grass roots effort, just a bunch of people who got together and decided to do something to help out.[:)]

The map is cool.

I remember the cool maps of Tulsa sponsored by Rex's Boneless Chicken that had participating e businesses drawn on them with streets and hot air baloons in the sky above.  There is on on the wall at Ted's Hamburgers on Edison Street and at Bill & Ruths Submarine Sandwich shop on North Sheridan.

The art work on those maps was interesting to look at.

Excellent resource.

Is there a way you could add sorting of restaurants by meal served or something? Most visitors are here during non-business hours, when most downtown eateries are closed. It'd be nice to be able to sort out all the lunch only stuff.

McNellie's, Tulsa's best bar, is not listed under bars, only under dining.

There's one place listed under restaurants, but the rest are under dining.

Is that Daily Grill open yet?

Who says it's a bad thing? I like kitsch. You should make it interactive so it plays YMCA when people use it. Flame on, Marys!

We used the same classification system the state uses:
Bar = 50% or more of revenue is from alcohol. Dining = 50% or more from food.

Although we are looking at ways to dual-list them.

Something being under "restaurants" is a type from test code.

Daily Grill, Joe Momma's, and Casa Laredo are all listed, because they will be open by wrap day (early september) and needed to be on the printed version.

The restaurants are classified by mealtimes on the printed map and you should be able to search by mealtimes but I'll look into it.

Thanks! Feedback greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the responses.

I answered my own question re: the daily grill. According to the sign out front it opens Aug. 18, a week from Monday.

Hooray for places downtown that are open nights and weekends!!! As I've stated before, lunch only spots are nearly worthless for my lifestyle (and for creating a vibrant downtown).

There's a nice ad for the Dilly Deli in the El Guapo's bathroom. Looking forward to sandwiches, pastries, wine and beer there.

Sorry I missed the press event, anyway will post any pictures I have as I browse the site some more.

One Note, it might be a good idea usability/accessibility wise to have links to the different category's On the main Browse/Results page.

Also are there plans to have other sorting features in some of the categories?

Anyway things have slowed down at work so I am able to help more again. Will most likely spend some time tomorrow taking pictures.

Everyone just threw out names and that one was the one that most people liked and could agree on. No "research", study groups, marketing firms or anything of the sort involved lol.
Was just pick a name, move along and get something done lol.

Keep posting comments and ideas to make http://www.downtownlive.org better.  This is a collaborative process, and you guys can help us make it amazing. (This is really just the beginning, not the final product.)

I think we might need a "tagline" for DowntownLive.  Something fun, cool and creative with the words "downtown Tulsa" in it.  Any ideas/thoughts out there for a tagline?  (Dsjeffries, we know you're out there...)

By the way, within minutes of the unveiling, we received several requests from people who want to distribute our map at their events.  We also have organizations and businesses asking us if they can link to the DowntownLive site from their webpage.  (YES!)  (I think we need to come up with a small version of the logo, so people can click on that as the link.)

Not a lot of meaningful names with "tulsa" in them available that aren't like 50 characters long.

That and we named the project before we looked at URLS.

I suggest we have a permanent link just to the right of the banner add thingey at the top. The TN forum can act as a great advertisement for the Downtown LIVE! website. Its an advantage that those other downtown or Tulsa websites cant match and will keep people going to it.

And yes, I cant wait to have our next meeting. There are so many possibilities that we can look at to improve both the website and the printed map. Would love to see the Home Page of the site livened up a bit. I know everyone on this project has put in a looooot of work, and I really want to thank those who built the website. They did a great job and on a tight schedule.

A friend of mine suggested that we collaborate with Urban Tulsa to connect to their music calendar.  I wonder if there would be a way to filter it so that only downtown stuff shows up.  Then we could highlight it and say: "Downtown Music Calendar Brought to you by Urban Tulsa Weekly" or some such thing...

At a minimum, we could include a link to their website for the music/events.

Free golden showers on every project, courtesy of Tim.

No, you can't get this information on any other site. The Chamber claims they have all of it listed, but their site is about a year out of data and sitting at about 30% invalid info. When we started DTU's PDF (they don't have it on their site, they just link to a PDF) was titled "March 2007." so it was a year out of date as well. They have updated theirs since but still not real great. Not to mention neither of them have photographs, mapping, reviews or comments because they can't afford the have a chamber member getting anything other than 100% positive on a chamber site.

As far as traffic goes, at only a few days old, DowntownLive is tracking only slightly below this site and Urban Tulsa.

One last thing, I cannot imagine why you, of all people, would lament starting up a new website.

Guess what!!! We DON'T have a trolley. We have a cutsie rubber tired, diesel powered bus.  It tries to look like a certain era trolley but doesn't really succeed. It's better than nothing but it is not a trolley.  Calling that a trolley is much like calling a dinghy with a small outboard motor a "Bass Boat", a plow horse a "Quarter Horse". It's kind of insulting really.

I haven't lived near the trolley since 1971 so I don't have any of my own pictures to post.

See:
http://www.phillytrolley.org/

Look carefully at the rubber tired Trackless Trolley. It is electric powered from two overhead wires.

The word trolley as used here is derived from the device that collected the power from the overhead wire(s).

Thanks for all your work, Ryan. Your company as well. The website is a great resource, and, unlike others, I really like the design/layout. I think the color scheme is subtle yet distinct, and the layout is clean. I hope, in the future, you heed my advice on the loading of the description/hours/location tabs on the details.php page I mentioned above. I'm also a fan of typography, so, personally, I'd like to see some more "flair" in the header fonts, but you can't go wrong with Arial (even so, I'd prefer Helvetica). Also, I'm not a fan of two "About"s in the nav bar (About Downtown Live & About TulsaNow). I think this would be better suited in a drop down or combined into one page. On the Browse page, I'd like to be able to go to a certain letter of the alphabet as well as next/previous page. If I'm looking for McNellie's, I don't want to have to guess what page it is on. Also, when I go to a business's page, if they don't have a picture in the Google Maps box, it shows a picture of the Abear's on Greenwood restaurant. I'm just listing this myself, so I apologize if anything I've said has already been mentioned. Overall, again, its a great resource and a great website. I'll use it frequently and will pass it on to friends.

Speaking of which, any chance of a mobile site? I'd love to pull this up easily on my Blackberry if I'm out and about and looking for someplace new.

I would say I hate to be picky but I'd be telling an untruth regarding buses being called trolleys.  I think I've heard it referred to as the T-Town Bus.  What's wrong with that?  I'll bend a bit an say that since a real trolley is impractical at this time, the T-Town Bus is a good idea. There is nothing wrong with calling it a bus.

In the 1930s or so, buses were considered by many to be superior to the old trolleys. (Mostly by GM, Firestone, and Standard Oil.) That is one reason the PCC trolley cars were developed, to compete with buses. In most cities, Tulsa included, it was too late.

Street cars and other rail would be good for Tulsa.  If we call the bus a trolley and decide to get a real trolley, I believe the local vocal nay-sayers would say we already have a trolley. Then they would ask what is all the proposed money for?

When I lived in Eureka Springs they had the same thing and called them trolleys. Nobody complained or went up in arms at the notion of them being called Trolleys. The Tourists loved them, locals to for that matter. I always enjoyed using them. They are different than a typical bus in look, and feel when riding them. They just seem more fun. Is that reason enough to call them something different? Who gives a crap? I am going to call it a Trolley, and if you dont like it... get a life or a therapist and get over it.

Geeez, keep your blood pressure down. I know I'm not really  going to convince anyone to call it a bus.  If I just said "Hey, it's a bus.", I'd get even less response than I normally do.  Rail enthusiasts know the difference between a bus and a trolley but most Americans wouldn't recognize a trolley if it ran over them. The name sounds "cool", they know the word trolley. You could put seats and a canvas roof on a trailer pulled by a pickup and call it a trolley as far as most people know. It would be different and fun to ride. There's a bunch of money to be made calling those buses trolleys.

Anyone who wants to remain ignorant is free to do so.

I really think "most" people do know the difference, its ignorant to think they dont', and that its perhaps only "rail enthusiasts who do lol.

Hey, the word "artist" is just another word. If I want to call myself an artist, I can.

I could also call myself a doctor. When I was in Navy boot camp, my CPO told me only a doctor could dispense asprin.  I now determine if I need an asprin and take one. Therefore I am a doctor.

Dentists clean teeth. I brush my teeth, therefore I am a dentist.

They're just words, who gives a crap.

The point is that words do have a meaning. I know people want to call that bus thing a trolley and that I am not going to stop it. They are, however, still incorrect.

What is so wrong about calling it a bus?  They are a legitimate vehicle for carrying passengers.  In fact, buses were the winning competition for the style of trolley they now try to emulate.  The trolley industry tried to fight back with the PCC Trolley.  PCC trolleys are the streamlined ones from the late 1930s and thru the 1940s. A handfull of cities used them for several more decades. Philadelphia, PA has retrofitted about a dozen with airconditioning and modern running gear. I think they would fit Tulsa nicely.  Evidently the word "bus" has too negative a  connotation. Wikipedia, not necessarily a proven reliable source.  I look there too but verify anything questionable.

The term "Trolley Bus" is also already taken. It is the electric powered bus with two trolley poles to collect overhead electric power since it has rubber tires and cannot use rails for the other connection.

And I (obvioulsy) don't want to call "that vehicle" a trolley of any kind.  I am technically correct. You have ignorance on your side.

You must have some money invested in the things. Afraid you'll lose money if people find out they are not a trolley?

Hence forth I shall refer to the trolley shaped rubber wheeled conveyance as the "Trolbus".
Pronouced: Trawl-bous unless it is infested with unatractive people at which point it will be pronounced as: Troll-bus

Just now read the thread and found my name... I'll do some thinking [:P]

With many people making up their own definitions for existing words, one cannot be sure it wasn't just a grammar error.

This discussion is really on a roll now...

No pun intended.

Venice style canals running around the city with gondolas would be nice and they would put an end to the debate over trolleys....though I suppose "gondola" can mean a few different things too.

Crap.

The boats you are thinking about are the first choice definition in my dictionary.  I won't mention that one of the 2nd choice definitions is for a type of railroad car. (I wouldn't want to ride one though.) 3rd and 4th choices are for the passenger areas of a dirigible or balloon.  I just had to look it up and find out.

If we used Arkansas River water to fill the canals, they might not freeze in the winter due to the salt levels in the Arkansas.
