For about a week there's been a couple of blinding spotlights on the west side of Cheyenne just south of 4th Street, pointing across the street at the Adams Building.
I can't see anyone working on the outside of the building. The light is just blinding if you're anywhere near it.
The street lights in that area haven't worked for years, so we go from complete darkness to blinding spotlights.
Anybody know anything about this?
That building seems to have new lights at the top but I seem to remember the spotlights being there for a while.
Those spotlights, if they were there before, were never turned on.
Those are the kind of things you don't forget. So bright as to be permanently burned into your brain.
There's gotta be some kind of regulation against ultra bright lights aimed horizontally.

I never noticed that. I'll have to check it out the next time I drive by. Tulsa banned those brite LED BillBoards, I can't see why Tulsa would allow spotlights that are even brighter than the billboards.[xx(][B)]

You would think.
Blinding glare is a threat to public safety, but you would be amazed at how many property owners explain it away as "security" lighting.
Tulsa still has the "any light is a good light, and the more the better" mentality, so when someone decides to throw up some floodlights or acorns on the taxpayers dime, there's never any evidence required to show that they contribuite to good vision or crime prevention. The 'Lectric company is the experts, we just do what they says.

Here it is. There are no other lights within a block or more in either direction on Cheyenne. They even installed new acorn lights in the area recently. But they're not turned on either.

Maybe they were hoping people would see their way around from the lights reflecting off the building. I guess if you walk around downtown with your back to these lights...

Just makes you want to go walking around looking for some place to shop, or meet new friends on your trek back to wherever you parked your car.
That picture doesn't even do it justice. Try walking anywhere within a half block of it. It's like somebody's standing right in front of you shining a flashlight in your eyes.

The lights have been there for quite awhile. They have been used in the past to light up the exterior of the historic Mincks-Adams Hotel|Building (//%22http://www.tulsapreservationcommission.org/nationalregister/buildings/index.pl?id=28%22) ca. 1927-28 just as other architecturally interesting buildings downtown have been lighted.
If you'll look in the Google Streets photo, you'll notice they point upward more. TheTed's photo appears to have them pointing horizontal. Perhaps they are testing them in anticipation of showing off the building during the opening of the BOK Center?

They are pointing mostly horizontal right now. They've been that way for about a week. I've never even noticed them before that.
Prior to the last week either they weren't on or they were pointed in a completely different direction so as not to be physically assaulting my vision.

Are we trying to scare people away from walking at night, or just going for that "Blade Runner" look for downtown?
But seriously, they are wide-angle flood lights, and if you look at the daytime photo you can see the light-producing element at eye level, so it wont make much difference how high you aim a fixture that bad.
Chalk this one up to poor design.
One thing for sure those are not temp. light fixtures or construction light fixtures. It really looks like they have a reason to be there. Does anyone know what the blue sign on the light post says? Very strange.[:o)]
