Title: Rate Tulsa steakhouses
Post by: bbriscoe on July 31, 2008, 02:40:46 PM
Now that Steak and Ale is gone this made me wonder what's left.

What are Tulsa's best mid-price steakhouses?  I don't mean the mega-chains like Texas Roadhouse, Lonestar, and Outback Steakhouse.  Or the high-price places like Flemings, Mahogany, or Polo Grill - though we could discuss those as well.  But of the independents and smallers chains I can only think of 3 right now that I've been to: Silver Flame, Jamil's, and the Gaucho.  What are your favorites?

Green Onion's blackened prime rib is tasty.

McGill's on 21st...nothing against the other location...I just prefer the one on 21st

Ate at The Spudder a couple of weekends ago and found it better than it has been in a long time.

I've heard that the silver flame is or will be up for sale.

Brother Houilgan does some pretty decent steaks.

My back yard.   I grilled some pretty tasty Rib Eye Steaks if I do say so myself just last night.  [8D]

Ever try Ichiban Terriyaki at 41st and Memorial?

Mahagony's can rule. Ummmmm, butter.

Charlestons on 71st and Yale has a pretty good filet. As someone said earlier, Spudder is great, but it is kind of expensive. What about Osaka fantasy steakhouse at 51st and Harvard? I went there for the first time yesterday, and I think it might be a little better than Shogun.

Eddy's on 31st and Jamils on 51st.

My favorite is the Jamil's $9.95 Club Special

Complete with Relish Tray featuring celery, carrots, green onions, pickles radish.  A Bowl of Humus Tahini for dipping. Basket of Rye, Wheat and Pita bread with a stick of butter. Second basket filled with scrumptious slow smoked ribs and balogna.  Bowl of Tabouli. Second course a mixed salad with choice of dressing or house vinaigrette.  Third course entree, including Steak, Seafood or Smoked Chicken.

Great food, quantity and quality for $9.95.  Wish I could find these types of deals when I travel out of state.  Tulsa has the best value around on restaurant food than our surrounding neighbors.

Last word was Jamil's is supposed to stay open through the end of the summer.

Is Jamil's going to reopen elsewhere?  We can't lose both Jamil's and Silver flame.  Where will we get Syrian Bologna and Humis?

Anyone been to Avalon steakhouse in Sapulpa?

Do any of these steakhouses have good salad bars like Steak and Ale had?  How about Lobster bisque?

Jamil's is re-opening.  Can't remember where, but there was an article about it in the last few months.  I send out of town visitors for football there and they always love it.  Can't beat those prices.

Eddy's has the same bologna, hummus, and fixins.  Same with Freddie's (I go to the one in Sapulpa).

The wife and I enjoyed Doe's. I know some of you have ill feelings towards the owner and honestly, his advertising sucks, but the T-bone and Rib-eyes were great and the service good.

Both Jamil's and Eddie's are FILTHY! Jamil's should have the health dept on them in a flash!
Ichiban served us what would work well as retreads for hippy sandals one night...sent them back and a large argument followed as the mangement couldnt see the problem....the cut of meat sucked out right from appreance to texture.

The owners Edmond and Sherian are also great. They have donated food to us for events we have had off-site.

Eddy's is the cleanest restaurant in Tulsa.

I go to Jamil's several times a year and it's fine.  The food is good, the service is what it is (I think there was another thread about thei service awhile back), and they aren't going out of business.

Jamil's has the greatest seasoned grills and smokers in the state. If you are seeking super clean sanitary tasting steak cooked on a stainless steel no seasoned grill, try the Outback place.  But if you enjoy the hickory flavored wood burning seasoning on an iron black seasoned grill, go to Jamil's.

Another good article on Eddy's Steak House.  Eddy Elias and Jimmy Elias

The late Jimmy Elias in his younger days. Jamil's opened in 1946 in Tulsa.  This was the location on 27th Street and Harvard.  Jimmy is grilling some of his famous "Jitney Jungle" steaks.  "Jitney Jungle" was the grocery store on Harvard where Drug Warehouse is today. They had the best steaks in the world!

Appears Grant Hastings may of gotten his hooded grill idea from Jimmy Elias.  Hastings invented the hooded portable Hasty Bake Grill in 1948 in Tulsa, however Jamil's opened in 1946, two years prior.  Hasty Bake's Stainless Steel model is long lasting, and with proper seasoning makes some of the best steaks!

http://www.hastybake.com/grills.html

Still hard to beat back yard grilled meats and veggies.  A foil wrapped potato with butter, salt and pepper cooked over good hardwood lump charcoal along with a cored onion filled with butter and wrapped up in foil cooked to perfection over the hot coals.  Pick up the meat at Perry's at 10th and Lewis.

Woah, mouth watering indeed.  I recall many a weekend at Jack and Elenor Sigg's  Cabana Club on east 51st where the green onion stands today.  The grounds included a park area in the front with giant trees and giant swings.  Families would gather there with their hasty bakes and cook up some marvelous tasting meals which were eaten on the redwood stained picnic tables about the mowed grass meadow.

Last I was told the plan was for Jamil's to possibly move to the Jimmy's Egg location, east of where they are presently, on 51st Street.

They once had the idea of moving to the Eddy's location, however I believe Steve and his brother decided to keep working that location a while longer.

They are really nice people.  I have a friend who does some work for them and they always go out of their way to make us feel the royal treatment (by Sapulpa standards) when we go.  Love that they have Choc, too.

Freddie's does a lot of catering in the area, too.  Always look forward to their cabbage roll or tabouli at the different restaurant sampler events.

Last time I went to Avalon I wasn't impressed. We were the only group there and our service was horrible and the steaks were mediocre. Just go to freedies down the street if you are in the area.

I agree Freddies is the best steakhouse in the area regardless of price. I go there for my birthday every year and whenever we have out of town guests that's where we usually go to impress them. Was not impressed with the Avalon last time we went there, also never been too impressed with Jamil's.  Someone mentioned Lobster bisque, Fuesco's Riverside Grill has very good Lobster bisque if you go there. Doe's steaks were good too (and huge), went there once for my wife's company party but her boss had a disaggreement with the management over the bill so doubt if we go there again.

The new Avalon has been disappointing.

LOL, Ed "Tex" Slyman of Freddies was my Jr High phys-ed teacher at Byrd Jr High in the late 60's.  He began selling tabouli in grocery stores at that time.  Ill the kids told him he was the only lesbian person they had ever met.

Not a "Tulsa" steakhouse (but then neither is Freddie's)... okay, not even a steakhouse. Nonetheless, one of the best steaks I've had was at Pete's Place in Krebs. And it went fabulously with the ravioli, iceberg salad, spaghetti, etc.

Coach Slyman also made the Tabouli for Jamil's for many years.  I thought his Tabouli was some of the best.

Speaking of Coach Slyman and that era, anyone recall Jack Purcell Blue Tip Tennis Shoes, and Fire Crackers from the Staiger's store near 51st and Yale?

I wondered if these are the same folks, called but the number is disconnected?

Doe's blows.

Conan's poolside grill and BBQ near 15th & Harvard is where it's at.  Invitation-only, keeps out the FOTD's of the world

FYI,

If anyone wants to try a new cut of beef they've not tried before, ask Duke @ Harvard Meats for a Hanging Tender.  It's a butcher's choice and hard to find.  Unique flavor, similar to a filet texture.

I'm a big fan of Doe's.  Skip can rub me the wrong way, but I think he means well.  It's got this combination of German beer, tamales, and steak that I haven't found anywhere.  We did try to rent the place out for something and they were really weird about it . . . but that's par for the course.  The Pat Jones ad for them is craptacular.

I would rather get my beef at Perry's or at Harvard Meats.  They don't pack it in cryovaced little packages that are then frozen.  The flavor of Omaha Steaks has never stood out to me.

I think Doe's is great food, but I refuse to pay good money and be treated like crap.

I've been meaning to try the filet at ITR, I've heard raves about it and I'm not a sushi fan.

Don't know about Staigers - but your mention of Jack Purcells brings back loads of memories. I actually bought a couple pair online this year. Great, comfy, stylish "Jacks" as we used to call them in Baltimore. Any other sneaker was called a "fish-head" (derogatory) - didn't know they even sold Jacks here in Tulsa. Talk about retro!

And back to the original thread -

I like Logans. Their big rib-eye is surprisingly good for a chain.

Still Off Topic, but to answer...

Preps wore the Blue Tips in Gym class along with a plain white T-Shirt that was marked in black ink with your last name using a stencil and white elastic waist shorts.  The bossy Phys-Ed coaches would yell at you calling you by your last name, like some military thing.

For dress many of the preps wore Cordovan Penny Loafers.

Us rebel kids that rode Honda 90s with the mufflers removed, and used the right toe of our shoe to muffle the sound on occasion.  We were easily identified by the dark black carbon circle on our right shoe from holding it against the end of the header pipe which terminated below the foot peg.  .  And the tale tale rubber mark from the sifter on our left shoe.

Most of those types of clothes came from Renbergs, or Orbachs in Utica Square.

If you watch the movie "The Outsiders" which was filmed in Tulsa, you will pick up on the beige colored Levi Brand  Wheat Jeans, and Penny Loafers on the prep boys.  They were worn tight down to the ankle only stopped about 2 to 3 inches high.  Also known as high-waters later in time.

Preps and the Greasers apparel style.

After school the rebel kids kicked off their penny loafers and wheat jeans and changed into a T-Shirt, and Levi Blue Jeans also called dungarees.  Lots of parents hated dungarees for some reason, and we were not allowed inside their house or to run around with their kids if we got caught wearing them.

Flat Top, Crew Cut or Burr was the hair-style.  Rebels on the south side wore their hair longer, while many of the north side greasers had longer hair, but kept it combed and plastered down.  Was not too much later when long hair became the staple for the Hippie movement and kids began wearing longer hair. School authorities hated long hair on boys then for some reason.
