Where have you been eating lately? Anywhere new?
This one is not new, but is "new" to me. We ate at "White River" today and it was amazingly good. I was a bit wary seeing the sort of "diner" look, but we'll go back for sure.
Has anyone tried Rio Verde? supposedly good Mexican food?
The White River is legendary around here. I have been going there since I was small and now I am big.
When I first got married, my wife and I would go there on Valentine's Day. They sell the cheapest lobster dinner in town that night.
When I took my son fishing the first time, we were unsuccessful in catching anything big enough to eat. We stopped at White River, picked out some fresh fish and got them wrapped. I then stood a few feet away from my son and tossed him the fish so he could say he "caught" them.
The newish restaurant I have been to is Elotes on Bsoton near sixth. It was an ozone alert day so we wanted to walk to lunch. I loved the chicken burrito covered in white queso. I topped off the meal with churros for all. They were warm and cooked just right.
El Fogon Mexican Restaurant near German Corner in Owasso is very good. I eat lunch there at least once a week.
I had the Hanger Steak at Oscars earlier this week and recommend it. Also the fried green beans. Tonight after seeing Mamma Mia! we stopped off at KEO and I had the Ahi Poke, probably my favorite dish there.
I had some really good food at Copeland's at 71st and 129th in Broken Arrow.
Tucci's.
Contrary to my belief, there is decent pizza in Oklahoma.
I went to Papa Murphy's in Owasso earlier this week. I'd had their pizza before, but it had been several years. Too bad there isn't a location in midtown.

White river is great. Rio Verde is also one of the best - cash only.
I am headed to Rio Verde for Breakfast right now. yum. the best huevos rancheros in the city.

Evelyn's Restaurant it is on the north side of the Airport Complex. You enter it off 46th St by the Zoo Entrance.
http://indietulsa.wordpress.com/2008/02/15/evelyns-restaurant/
Tried El Tequilas at 81st and Memorial.
Meh...
Just about like every other Mexican food place in this town. I wish I could find one that could stand out. It's almost like they use the same menus and rename the food dish. Guess I'm a little jaded after living in Houston for three years.
Also wish I could find a real, hole in the wall Cajun restaurant.
I tried Ella's Deli on 11th across from TU. It was great. Great food and a great atmosphere. I'm just disappointed I didn't visit sooner.
Tried Cafe Ole this afternoon for a margarita and chips. Saw that Cafe Ole was voted 'best margarita' in Urban Tulsa.
All I can say is WOW! Great stuff all around. We'll be back.
The other day, a friend took me to a little place called PJ's that's in the back of a little strip center just west of Goldie's on 31st near Yale. The sandwiches were really good. Someone told me they used to be in Utica Square, but I don't remember them.

Mmmm...Cafe Ole. Make sure to get the white queso on your next visit. Fun place...

Owasso has a new Cajun Restaurant Boudreau's, have not ate there yet. But then I'm not big on hot and spicy foods. It is on North Main in the old Gary's Mexican building. I do see a lot of cars there when I drive by so something is going on there.

Evelyn's is great. Joyner's on 21st east of Memorial is another place for great soul food, and they tend to be open when Evelyn's is closed; Evelyn's closes after lunch, Joyner's is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, plus Sunday from 1:30 to 7:30 for a buffet. (Here's my review with a link to their menu (//%22http://www.batesline.com/archives/2008/06/joyners-home-cooked-food-restaur.html%22).)
You will not go home hungry.
Please, everybody go to Hmong Cafe, which is in a shopping center at 31st and Garnett. At this point, it's the best Southeast Asian food we've found to date in the city. The ingredients are fresh, the portions are generous for the money, and they are willing to make things nice and hot for you if you ask.
Also, the place is very clean and well kept, which means a lot to us.

I love to cook, so I have always enjoyed my meals at home, and avoided the high price mark-ups of local restaurants. My freezer and frige are always jam-packed with the latest food specials. Learn to cook, and you will save big bucks over restaurant tabs, impress your friends, and eat much more healthily. The best, cheapest place to eat is your own kitchen.

As someone who lives in Columbus, Ohio what could you possibly add to this thread that would be of any value.
Folks here are not interested in Whataburger or any other restaurant chain for that matter. They are interested in good local restaurants that offer an interesting twist to their offering.

Dining is a matter of choice. Some of us are not looking for the cheapest. I get paid for my cooking and I enjoy dining out plus I also enjoy my cooking. Your post is not relevant to the thread for those of us who do enjoy dining out.
If you want to start a thread about what you are cooking then we can comment on cooking at home and join you in your adventures at the stove. This thread is about places we like to go spend our hard earned money in a manner that we choose. Just like you enjoy spending your money buying all the specials to go in the freezer.
btw, I hardly freeze anything. I try to buy fresh and plan my meals on what I find and am inspired by at the markets, both local grocery stores and local farmers markets. I go to the market several times a week and I do not always buy only what is on sale. That is too restrictive to what I enjoy eating. If I was on a very tight budget then I would consider more thrifty means of dining. And I know how to do this because I have not always had the ability to dine at my chosing.
But when the meal is memorable I have no problem spending $100 per person on a meal. And that was just the meal without drinks.
So please do not lecture us about being cheap. We know how to do that. Thank you.
What about Michael Fusco's Riverside Grill?
I haven't been there yet, but had tried Flavors when they were opened (sometime ago) and wasn't that impressed.

Thanks for the heads up on this place. A great find with good sandwiches and cool atmosphere. The unobtrusive jazz playing in the background. I had the french dip sandwich and it was delicious. THis is a place I will definitely frequent. It is in the little strip center across the street from the Reynolds center at TU. I might go here today.

I've been in Fusco's and 55 degrees, not dined either place yet. We were looking for al fresco dining and chose Red Rock Canyon over Fusco's because it was a nice evening out I would suppose others think like I do (are you listening Michael?). I felt it was outstanding. They've got locations in the OKC and Wichita areas, to me that does not make them a chain...yet.
I finally ate at the little Mexican carry-out on the west side of the street on Lewis up near Independence. That rocked. I cannot think of the name, it's in a building that looks like an old Tastee Freeze.

Is Mr Taco the place you are talking about. IF so, yes it is worth a stop.
That might have been it. In spite of the corny name, it was very authentic. There was also a guy pushing a tamale wagon down the street while we were eating outside, pretty cool.
Where is Mr. Taco located?

My latest addiction is KEO on Brookside. I guess you could call it Asian fusion. Have loved everything I've tried...salads, appetizers and entrees. I'm especially fond of their red curry dish, they make great vodka gimlets, and the Tom Ka soup is to die for!

Asian fusion was invented by cooks who can't cook real asian food. it is gimmicky. it is for people who have smug deficiencies in their diet.
you are a ****ing idiot.

I think Michael Fusco's is great. It's obviously pricey, so for us it's only for the occasional celebration or special occasion.

Yeah, most Mexican food here tends to be a variation on El Chico.... maybe the owners are afraid to stray too far from the formula...
Luckily, I like that formula, so I enjoy Tulsa-tex-mex at La Mansion over by the Radisson at 169 and 41st, then discovered some place over by 46th? and Mingo in a tacky strip mall complete with a flower inside a Corona bottle on each table.... this decor works for me... [8D]
The (non-texmex) mexican food that reminds me of the mom-and-pop places I went to back in Chicago was..... Tacos San Pedro off 21st and 129th (Menudo on Saturdays?)..... they also have another one on 71st off Memorial....
May be worth a try.
***I see others have already commented on Hmong Cafe.... I'll second the motion.... do we have a quorum? [:P]
Rioberto's is real Mexican food.
11th and Garnett...open 24 hours.

It is almost exactly the same. Same menu, same stuff on the walls, etc. I thought the food tasted just a hair different, but it was still pretty good. I saw there a few weeks back and they were changing the name -- can't recall the new name. It's not my top choice for Mediterranean in town, but it's still pretty good. They are also open a little later now (and I think on weekends), so it might be a good place to go before and after TU games.
I'm a bigger fan of Cedars and Shawkat's. I've also been wanting to try the newer place in the gas station at 61st and Yale.

I tried out Mr. Taco yesterday for lunch yesterday - also for dinner, and for lunch today and I'm still not done with it. Apparently a 'Mr taco plate' is for about 4 people...
Shady looking area, but it was great! I'll be back to score some barbacoa this weekend.

Mr. Taco- great stuff, eh?
Halim & Mimi's- I think the tahini is different now (or whatever the garlic paste was they put on tawook). I hope the new owners make it, but honestly I just don't think about it that often anymore. The food was great, but H & M were the main reason I'd go there. You couldn't help but like them and they were good at remembering names, even when you hadn't been there in months.
I was just lamenting the I-44 shutdown of Lanna Thai at 51st and Harvard, when my neighbors suggested I try the Thai Siam restaurant over at 31st and Sheridan. Haven't been there yet, but they gave it rave reviews.

Their heads got big at Thai Siam.....
Halim and Mimi's......if you ever questioned their success was due to Mimi, the proof is in the falafel. ShishKabobs is better.
Honestly? This has been a bad year for eating out in Tulsa unless you are big and fat and ugly.[}:)]
We've eaten at Oscar's Gastro Pub twice and have mixed reviews... The first time (about 4 weeks or so ago) the meal was excellent. This time, the exact same appetizer and entrees were all very average and we probably won't be going back for awhile. They had completely changed the presentation of the fried green beans and the beans themselves were much more heavily coated in breading than before. I had the american kobe meatloaf, which I had been looking forward to all day, and it was average... My wife had a noodle dish with shrimp and some other stuff (I forget the name) and she told me (before I could say that mine was not as good) that it didn't taste like before.
Anyone else have the same experience?

I think Tommy is there on Fridays.
The people who took over from Halim & Mimi really need some cooking lessons, or at least learn that they should never, ever serve STALE food!
Worst food I've had in a long time. We left and vowed to never return. Our friend who is from Norwegian said his food tasted a bit off.
I give them two thumbs down!!!
Such sophisticated diners here I'm afraid to mention that I ate at El Guapo last nite. Pretty crowded and I was afraid by appearance that it might be a high priced, stylish sort of Casa Bonita. I have high standards since my former Mexican inlaws introduced me to their recipes for moles', chiliso and rice a hundred years ago.
But it was really good! I was surprised to even see the word mole' on the menu. The margarita was nothing special though potent. I always try a simple combination of items at Mexican restaurants to judge their food. A taco, an enchilada, beans and rice. If you can't do that right the rest is just fluff. Their seasoning was just spicy enough, the Charro beans were good, the enchilada and taco were great. The rice was a little dry but they were quite busy so I'll give them a break on that.
The top floor was closed which was disappointing but too hot anyway and another downer was seeing ants on the table when they took my plate away. Oh well...all God's creatures....

elliot really did himself a favor with the new chef and line changes... it really has gotten to be pretty decent, if not good...
sampled some of his new "dilly deli" menu the other night and was impressed... cant wit for it to open...
friends have noted that the okc mcnellies food (and atmosphere) while similar, was better overall than the original locale...

Try the red snapper tacos - not fluff.
Anybody been to Dalesandro's? It's an Italian restaurant at 18th and Boston.
I took my wife there Saturday night for our anniversary and it was pretty good. It was a little noisy — Saturday night crowd, a violinist was walking around playing — but we still enjoyed it. The atmosphere was pretty good.
They have a limited menu of very good entrees and appetizers. It's certainly not your cookie cutter Olive Garden-type Italian restaurant.
Check out the Web site, www.dalesandros.com

We went for the first time this weekend. And it will be last time, for sure. The kitchen was on target when it came to temperature and the room was very pretty - but the menu item conception was odd to inedible, the price point was too high for what it was, and we had a waitress who seemed to think she was working at Dairy Queen.
Strange, I've never had a bad experience at Oscar's and I've been five or six times.
The chorizo wontons are really tasty, the Tuna tataki, fried beans, crab fritters all good.
Marshall's beer seals the deal for me.

Try the red snapper tacos - not fluff.
OK, went to to El Guapo last Friday and its probably the last time I'll go on a weekend. We waited a little over 30 minutes for a table on top and didn't really mind. The food was great, but the margaritas sucked and so did our waitress. I realize it was busy, but we were quite understanding of the situation and still had to put up with a bad attitude. Maybe she was frustrated waiting for drink orders, but she was quick to make excuses for the bartender who I could see chatting with chics when he should have been slingin drinks. I still tipped well -- I'm such an enabler. Kitchen was doing their job though....

We went for the first time this weekend. And it will be last time, for sure. The kitchen was on target when it came to temperature and the room was very pretty - but the menu item conception was odd to inedible, the price point was too high for what it was, and we had a waitress who seemed to think she was working at Dairy Queen.
Sorry you had a bad time, not all places are for all people. There are places I do not go no matter how popular they are, it is my choice and I do not regret my choice. Neither should you.

You know Waterboy, if a place works for you then it is good. It might not work for others on this board. Sounds like your experience at El Guapo was much better than mine. Not a big deal and as far as prices, if it fits into my budget and is good then I will go back. It is fits into my budget but I think it is awful then I probably will never darken the door again, example, In the Raw, it just isn't for me but for the people who like it, have at it. Variety is what makes our dining dollars important. I am not partial to some of the old line Tulsa places but I didn't grow up here and those places are not part of my history. But I will not dump on a place unless it is dirty just because of my prejudices. Scooters Hamburger Palace in Sand Springs was great to me. Ron's, not so much.
Thanks, Joeie. What I mean is we don't have the budget to eat out a lot, therefore we aren't real sophisticated in our palate.
We sprung for a nice meal at Oscars Saturday night. I thought the menu was fun, the waitress gladly expounded on some of it and made recommendations. I had the Kobe beef meatloaf, sitting on mashed potatoes and spinach and it was very good. Not outstanding but since I didn't belch the rest of the evening I felt it was a good choice. Had a strong bitter ale on the side.
My wife went with a Shiraz and the Ribeye special which was cooked perfectly, had a side of yummy scalloped potatoes of some kind and cooked white and yellow carrots. It was excellent.
The prices were scary. We're not used to $75 just for the two of us. But the environment was just what we needed, the service attentive, the fellow patrons civilized and well mannered. We both noted it would be a good place to bring our big city relations when in town. As long as they're paying...
The Kobe meatloaf sounds a bit kitschy to me and I doubt it's "real" Kobe, considering a $50 per pound or more price point on Kobe beef.

Zoophilia, from the Greek æ#8182;ïí (z#7763;on, "animal") and öéëßá (philia, "friendship" or "love") is a paraphilia involving the sexual attraction to non-human animals.

How has this thread devolved into one about Ted Kennedy?
I think Kennedy prefers gin to saki.
Not completely off-topic, but does anyone remeber a restaurant in Tulsa called "Valentino's?" It was around in the mid-80s. I went there with my parents when I was a kid. It was the first time I had ever seen baked Alaska. My thoughts: "Wow! Ice cream on fire!"
guido911, shame on you for trying to hijack an informative thread.
Back on topic, I had lunch today at the White Rabbit Deli in the Brady district, on the corner of Main St and Cameron. They are open for breakfast and lunch. I had a cup of soup and a southwest chicken wrap sandwich. Cute place and very very clean. Homemade cookies and other baked goods like muffins. Give them a try.
I wish more downtown places would give dinner service a try. [:(]

If hemp honey made the cookies and muffins, they'd have a lot more customers. Then it would be a true arts district....Some might come from far away places!

Downtown now seems to be divided between the lunch/breakfast places near the denser office areas and the dinner/ burger places farther out on the perimeter. I can see why Billy's wouldn't want to be open for dinner (no foot traffic after 5 pm), but you'd hope there would be some better options.
Granted, Casa Laredo is opening up and that's a start, but you want more fine dining downtown than what we have (and I don't consider Laredo to be fine dining, though I have a soft spot for it).
We really need a good kebab place or a NY style pizza thing that is open all hours.

I'm really hoping with the new attractions downtown (Arena/Ballpark) that it will be viable for more restaurants to open for dinner. Plenty of times during the week we want to grab dinner downtown, either just to support the businesses there or because we're going to a show. The options really are limited. I used to always fall back on Caz's Chow house, but for a while there, they just were randomly closed and when they were open, we were disappointed that they kept dropping items from the menu until there was very little to choose from. At least they got that Wasabi dressing stuff back for the pickle chips! Alright, I'm getting hungry.
Downtown Dinner (I'll refrain from commenting on whether the establishment has edible grub)

Edited to add the below suggestions
The Daily Grill opens Monday.
I went their today for a preview lunch. They served me a pot pie that was the size of a hubcap. My wife had a wonderful salmon pasta dish.
The place is beautiful inside. The food was perfect. The staff superb.
It is my new favorite fancy place to eat in town.

So where is it?
The Daily Grill is inside the Crown Plaza Hotel downtown. Doug Rudy, who used to tend bar at Tucci's is supposed to be going to work there.

Ah thanks, now I've put it together. Looks like its worth a go. Aside from the smell of fresh paint and some really odd check-in desk arrangement, and some road construction issues, oh and maybe a little much on the Christopher Lowell style, the Crowne Plaza really does look pretty good.
Are the prices like Charlestons? Food better I hope?
So I went to brunch at the Palace Cafe this weekend. It is a bit expensive, but not as bad as I thought. Starts at $8 and goes up to about $15. The best deal was the daily special, a big scramble with potato wedges for $9. The only specifics I really remember is that there was goat cheese involved. I had the Huevos Rancheros and they were plenty good, but I'll try something else next time. Someone at our table got a salmon omelet and she was very pleased. More than the main entrees, its the other items offered that really make the place. We had a carafe of French pressed coffee for the table. They first brought out a plate of fruit (I'm not sure if everyone gets this or if they were just being extra generous with us), we also had some banana bread that was great, and followed the whole thing up with a sampler plate from the pastry chef - amazing! We tried a piece of chocolate cake made with extra fancy chocolate, a tart of some kind with blackberry, and a piece of chocolate bachlava. These were some of the best small deserts I've had in town!
Anyone familiar with Kolam Innovative Indian Cuisine on Memorial?
http://kolamiic.weebly.com/
If this restaurant was covered, I apologize.
Don't get out near Woodland Hills too terribly often but Santino's (at 71/Memorial behind Toys R Us) is excellent! Moderately priced and great service.
it would be nice if one of these (//%22http://www.bbbopricebowls.com/02_about.html%22) would open here somewhere in Brookside. The menu sounds much better than pee wee's.
I finally made it to TeKe's (I know, I am slow). Very good all the way around.
Heads up! Daily Grill scores! Ambiance and service very good.....food is the best downtown.....menu has it all.

Made it over to Oliveto this afternoon. Very nice Italian restaurant. Great food, atmosphere and service. I will be going back often.
I had dinner at D'Novo, the new place in Kingspoint Village at 61st and Yale. The menu wasn't all that expensive, the portions were more related to portion sizes we should all be actually dining on, they say the calorie count per entree is less than 500 calories. I enjoyed the salmon although I thought they need to cook the wild rice a bit more.
It is fast casual so when you walk in you go to the counter to your left and place your order before you sit down. The interior decoration is way more then the fast casual lets on.
I will go back because I want to explore more of the menu. And I look forward to the upscale tapas bar LXI they are opening next door and also to their gourmet to go market on the other side. It looks like they are going to take full advantage of all that old market space. Good for them and good for Tulsa.

Agreed on the Daily Grill. Good food, good drinks and good hours.
We had takeout from Siam Palace last night. I wish I could say it was a new favorite, but we both thought what we had was abysmal. The fresh spring rolls were fine, but the chicken lahb, beef lahb and papaya salad all tasted old and were extraordinarily salty. The papaya salad in particular seemed to have been stewing in an oily, gloppy brown chili sauce for several days and was literally gray.
We ended up throwing away 2 of the 4 dishes. For the chicken lahb, I physically picked out the vegetables that seemed most decayed from the salad and then repurposed what was left into another dish.
I read on the internet belatedly that people have enjoyed Siam Palace's bun dishes. I wish I could say that we will try again and stick to the noodles, but we won't. It was a very negative experience and the exact opposite of what we were hoping for in all ways except heat. They were generous with the fresh, chopped chili peppers, and I did appreciate that.

Siam Palace? I've never heard of them, where are they located?
Thai Siam at 31st & Sheridan is great and I've not heard complaints about the Thai place near 33rd & Harvard.

Bangkok Thai buffet @ ~33rd & Harvard is a good buffet. The food has been fresh, the tables aren't sticky & clean. I've seen the kitchen door swing open a few times when eating there and everything looked very clean & organized back there too.
I've never had a bad experience eating there in probably the 12x i've been.

Slight correction: we're talking about Saigon Palace on 21st and Garnett.
No correction on the review, however. It was truly awful.
Some friends ate last night at the new Rick's Americain where St. Michael's Alley used to be.
He said it was not good and didn't get all the hype. Must just be teething pains after the move. He said they opened up the kitchen to the dining room and it's filthy. He said the menu was difficult to decipher so he settled on a Caesar and his GF had chicken. According to him, both meals would have been better at home.
Hibiscus Caribbean Bar and Grill. New on Brookside. 3316 S Peoria. Three words for ya, Mmm Mmm Good! They usually have live entertainment 4 times a week. Delicious food, great atmosphere, and the prices are unreal. Prices are comparable to Chili's.
The owners are the chef and the bartender. (Been open less than a month.) Enjoy!
So... 3316 didn't last long, did it? I thought the food was good, but sounded like a lot of people didn't care for the chef/owner's ego.

Good carribean music and nice looking menu. Even several vegetarian dishes......
Devilish hot jerk.....
I went to Casa Laredo tonight. Had excellent margaritas, chips and queso and a couple of small burritos.
It is at 4th and Cheyenne (right across the street from Coney Island) in the beautiful Adams Hotel building.
I think opening lunch is tomorrow.
I think Tulsans forget about some of our best established restaurants when new ones are opening all the time. Bourbon Street Cafe on Cherry Street is still an excellent place for seafood and cajun food.
I don't even like seafood, and we go there regularly. The Cobb salad is a favorite. Reasonable prices, great menu, fun casual atmosphere, and the Harrisons are very accomadating, hands-on owners. They do have live music on certain nights too. Give it a try!

Meh, not real cajun for me, but I lived near real Cajun land for some time, so I'm a little spoiled when it comes to Cajun food.
What's near TU? My husband tried the Lebanese place near there and said it was awful. They took over from Halim & Mimi's.
There's an Irish place across from F & M Bank at 13th & Harvard. McDonalds. Can't miss it, big red and yellow sign.

Try Ella's Deli directly across the street from the Reynolds Center in that strip center a few doors down from the CD Exchange.

After living in New Orleans I went there once after moving here. It was some of the worst southern Louisiana food I have ever had. I think only S&J was worse. Heberts down on 71st is the closest to the foods of south Louisiana. Not even that bar place on 51st has anything like what I know. Their idea of a po'boy was just not even close.

Thanks for the suggestions near TU.
What about Brookside? I've tried In the Raw and it was pretty good. Not the best sushi I've ever had though.
Osaka - Phenomenal dining experience, very talented chefs, and a lovely water garden outside the window.
Mario's Pizza - New York pizza pie across from Chili's & Rick's.
Brother's Pizza - If you like Hideaway, you'll love this family-owned pizzeria.
Elmer's BBQ - Best BBQ in Tulsa. Hands down.
The Brooks - Used to be a theater, now serves great food. You will not leave hungry.
In the Raw - Out of this world sushi and fun atmosphere
If you're willing to drive a bit, Cheddars & Abuelos on 71st are both great.
Thai Buffet - Great pad thai, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere.
Shishkabobs is out of the way, but serves the best gyros and falafel in town.
If you're craving a bit more refinement, head for the Chalkboard.

It was done for me last time when the hummus tasted like they'd used white beans instead of chick peas and not a trace of tahini. Basically, pureed white beans is what it tasted like. Bleh.
Oh, well, that means more trips to Cedar's!

Little bit further out of your way, but try Shawkat's at 41st & Sheridan. They are a nice father/son team.
I'm incredibly sad that they didn't keep up the food legacy at H&M's. Everyone I know misses Mimi, I know I do.
I tried takeout from Kholood's and last weekend - it is the little Medditeranean food/deli in the Shell station on 61st and Yale, at the end of Kingspointe shopping center.
It was a whim/test run, so I only order dolma and baba ghounnej - but both were excellent. Zack, the owner, was grilling chicken for another customer while I was there - it smelled great. The deli does New York style sandwiches, as well as Middle Eastern food. The owner lived in New York for awhile.
I plan to go again - I was very happy with what I tried during the one visit and the grill/kitchen area was very clean. The only complaint I have is that it took awhile to get the food - the owner is not the fastest mover in the world, and he very much wanted to get everything "right." He suggested that next time, I call ahead with what I wanted. Kholood's has a drive-through. It also does catering/big pans.
The menu and phone number can be found here:
http://www.kholoods.com/
Thanks, Dayzella.
I can't wait to try it.
You sometimes find the best food at little gas stations.
There used to be a fried chicken place in a Shell station at the entrance to the Port of Catoosa. I would go there and pick up food for volunteers working nearby and everybody would rave about the just right amount of spices on the food.
Yeah, Mimi was the best. Very sweet woman.
What about Nordaggio's? Anyone tried them? Is it a cafe? I heard about it recently because we're supposed to meet there for French conversation. Don't ask, LOL
Thanks for the info on Kholood's. They're not the Persian run restaurant, are they? Hubby didn't like the Persian place. The food was too greasy.

Isn't that sad? I gave them several opportunities to impress me...but sorry to say, they failed.
I love Shawkat's. They're very nice there, and everything is so clean.
Oscar's at 18th & Boston is AWESOME!!!! I love it. The food is excellent, the prices are very reasonable & the service is great. It does seem empty, because the place is so big. I hope they stay open for quite a while. This bar is in my top 3 of places to go. I don't feel I leave the bar and have wasted my money. Spread the word, this bar is definetly worth checking out. Once you go, I promise you will be hooked :)

Really? Didn't hear anything great about it when my friends went.
I finally tried the Chicago-style pizzeria near 11th & Pittsburg (former McDonald's) and really liked it. I can't think of the name off the top of my head. I'm sure we've discussed it on here before.

I do too. I'm usually there on Thursday's. That's the day I come to town around lunch time.
Has anyone tried the Garlic Rose on Brookside? I think that's the name.
What about Does Eat on Cherry Street? I heard they have the best steaks in Tulsa. Can't believe they'd be better than Mahogany's.

Love the Garlic Rose. Always a good evening.
We went to the Corner Cafe at 11th and Peoria on Saturday morning between our kid's basketball games. I haven't been there for over a decade.
I thought the gravy from my biscuits and gravy side dish was too runny. The rest of the meal was excellent however. My sunnyside eggs were perfect and the hashbrowns just right. My wife asked for crisp bacon and they got it perfect as well. The kids had waffles and they were big and fluffy.
The meal was very reasonably priced and I was amazed at how fast the service was. We sat down, ordered and were served in less than ten minutes.
The place is a dive and the parking lot inconvenient to enter and exit, but our experience overall was good and we will probably go back this Saturday.

I went to Doe's once. I thought it was a rip-off. The novelty of an extra-thick steak wears off when you realize they don't know how to cook one. The service was pretty crappy as well, they were not overly busy the night we went so there was no excuse.
There are others on here who like Doe's, but IMO, there are other places more deserving of your money in Tulsa.

Agree with the pricing and steak quality. Still, the place has good tamales. Garlic Rose is good also.
Stay away from Doe's! He had horrible service, from the owner specifically and have never and will never go back. The steaks are good, but not always, they were great sometimes and not others. Save your money.
Garlic Rose was very nice last time I was there.
I loved Doe's. I have also never had a problem with the waitstaff but I definately understand how that can taint a person's view of the place.
They have a pretty reasonably priced steak sandwich for lunch. Never had a steak sandwich that melted in my mouth before.
Dinners are pricey, but delicious as well.

They will never make it with that pricing...$9 lunch burgers spell FAIL.
That location is always such a good spot. Ha!
I mean, that location and every location on each side (including behind) have housed a failed business.
They had coupons in last week's paper, if you're a coupon kinda person.
Where is this Longhorn? The old Tony Romas?
Has Up The Creek failed yet?
Cancun is WAY better than El Rio Verde (I know we were not discussing it I just wanted to start a fight)
Doe's steaks are too $$$ for what you get.
Flemming's...pass. Jamil's carry out kicks it's donkey.
Corner Cafe...pleeeeze...sucked and is dirty...pass.
Here are 2 of the best meals in Tulsey Town:
3 Carne Asada tacos @ Cancun w/ beer and salty chips
Delux BunChaGio & Viet. Coffee @ BinLe or RiLe
end of story.

Little Chicago.
At lunch, they'll sell pizza by the slice off the buffet for something like $1.80 a piece. I have a Chicago poster I'm thinking of rolling up and taking to them.

Never heard of Cancun? That would probably be because you don't venture north of 71st I'd guess.
[:O]
7th and Lewis. I haven't been in ages, but if it hasn't changed, great Mexican food in an old DQ building. Popular among employess of Hillcrest from what I remember.
+1 on Shawkat's and Cancun.
Cancun has good salsa and never lets me down.
I tried Shawkat's Friday night dinner a couple of weeks back. The menu is a little different; I had some fish that was very good by Okie standards.

I hate to hear that, I liked Zach, but since he was doing it alone, the service was slow. I never had any qualms about the food quality.

give me a ****ing break dude....el rio verde isn't exactly south of 71st.
Then that means you drive 244 and get off at Utica. Which means you have no idea of what is in midtown.
I have been to Cancun to eat and it was pretty good. Had fish. They served it with the head and all...delish!
Oh, and I live up at 81st[:D]
And +1 on Ri Le and Shawkats.
Our 5 year old son is from Vietnam; we adopted him about 15 months ago. We go quite often...but really went there a lot when he first came home. It was awesome to hear him speak Vietnamese with the staff...but he's all English now!
Great food and a wonderful staff.

Awww, that is so cute! Have you taken him to Nam Hai? My little guy loves to look at all the crazy fruit in there.
Kolam Indian food at 48th and Memorial. Lunch buffet for $10.
Good Indian food. 6 or 7 main items and a mini salad bar. For me Indian food is OK every now and then but to a craving. Just a way to change it up.
Jim's Never on Sunday was packed today.

lunch buffet for $10 is a ripoff. You can go to Indian corner over at 61st/Garnett and get the same stuff with less variety and not pay $10, I think it is $7. but that is lunch or dinner.
DesiWok is the same way. (No buffet) Quality over quantity.
^^^A positive and constructive post...Body snatcher?^^^
Ah, there he is.
I ventured over to Santa Fe Cattle Company in Bixby since I live nearby and not been before. I'd say disappointed is the best way to describe.
I figured it would be somewhere in between Chili's and Outback but it was really closer to Sizzler.
Prices were reasonable but the service was rushed and the food average to mediocre.
Probably won't go back.
In terms of rushed, I know restaurants need to turn tables to make money, just don't be so obvious. Give me time to eat the appetizer and salad before bringing out the main entree.
Then don't put the bill in front of me until I'm done and I'm not a slow eater.
My wife and I both ordered a Ribeye and agreed the quality of the food was below what we expected.
We've recently been to Longhorn on 71st which is in the same Steakhouse genre' and their quality is much better in terms of food and service. We will definitely go back there.
Although the next Steak House trip is to the Silver Flame, Spudder or Jamil's. They're just a little farther away.

heh, I liked the fact that the service was rushed. I hate it when my server diappears forever and I want my check.
As far as the food being mediocre, I guess it depends on what you had. I had their Cajun quesadilla which, while not southewestern food, it was pretty unique.
it is actually more of a cross between Logans and Lonestar, I think calling it a Sizzler is a little overboard, especially since there is no Sizzler around here to compare to.
I thought Logan's was a poor imitation of Texas Roadhouse.
Excuse me if this has already been covered, the new Speedy Gonzales Mexican place at 26th and Memorial in the Clear Channel complex has been open for a week or so. Looks like the Sheridan location has closed. They are doing pretty good business, can't comment on the food personally.
Thanks Samalicious for the heads up. I will go check this out over the weekend.
The Kobe sliders and the Pulled Pork sandwich are truly unbelievable! I'm glad they got a good writeup!

Went there a couple weeks ago. It is worth checking out.

I want to check this out too! Is there a good lounge, or is it mainly a bar?
From what I remember, when you enter, there is a bar area on the left and a full dining room. There is also an upstairs area that has a bar as well. Try the chicken wings.

Portabella mushroom burger at the Clubhouse for lunch today.
Unfreaking believable!
Better than a hamburger. Don't know how they get it so juicy.
Went to FuWa Asian Kitchen at 101st & S. Sheridan (where Andales used to be). Apparently only carryout/delivery. Pretty decent, small menu. Best potstickers I have had in long time.
I'm calling you guys out, find a place that serves bolut in tulsa and I'll buy.
I finally tried Joe Momma's after the Ryan Adams show. That's a cool layout and the food was pretty good. We'll go back. What a good thing for downtown!
I was also out and about in south Tulsa Saturday . . . we tried Oliveto at 91st and Memorial. Not bad for what it is.
Had 2 craker crust pizzas from Leon's Saturday = GREAT!
Had chicken at Jim's Friday = GREAT!
Had several items at Fuji on Brookside on Thurs...not great.

it is called balut and I don't think health dept would allow that here. why not just go eat an aborted human fetus..about the same thing. You'd have an easier time finding Trung Vit Lon, maybe if you asked on the down low at one of the seedier viet places in town....but I'll be sticking to higher class fare.
As if he was serious, inteller. Sheesh...buy a sense of humor, would ya.
And why would one have an easier time finding Trung Vit Lon over Balut? Same thing.
My wife and I ate at Hibiscus Caribbean restaurant on Brookside.
The menu is basically three things:
Jerk
Jamaican Curry (not exactly what you think of as Curry)
and OTHER.
Chicken and seafood dominate the menu, but there are some beef and I believe pork products on there to. The menu is reasonably sized, 10-15 main entrees to choose from and 5 or so sides (including the mundane, rice, to more interesting, fried plantain bananas). They also have a full bar and a decent selection of bottled beer.
The staff was very friendly, giving a relaxed atmosphere while still being professional. So much so that I mistook the bar tender for the owner (most bar tenders don't take the care to occasional ask a customer how things are at random). The actual owner, as it turns out, was there sporting some wicked dreadlocks but I didn't have a chance to talk to him.
The place was very steady on a Saturday night and our server told us in general they have been very busy on Friday and Saturday. Live music many nights of the week and we left just as a band was setting up. Decoration wise it has a variety of warm colors, somewhat dimly lit, a sleek bar and seating, with original artwork on the walls (as it turns out painted by an acquaintance of my wife who has previously hung work in our house!).
Prices are reasonable. A import beer was $4, a mixed drink with 3 different liquors was $8, appetizers ~$10, and meals from $10-25 if my memory serves me right. I had 1/2 of a whole jerk chicken and my wife had jerk shrimp ("that shrimp's a jerk"), I had a couple red stripes and she had a mixed drink. The bill was under $50 before the tip.
Definitely a good place for a night out. As with most decent or above restaurants I'd leave the kids at home since they might not appreciate the interesting dishes and in the small space (maybe 15 tables) they could ruin it for other diners. A interesting addition to the Tulsa restaurant scene.

I tried Ella's Deli on 11th, across from TU, last week for take-out.
I wanted to really like it, because I know they are a small family business and need it to be a success.
But it was hard to feel good about paying $8 for a "deli" sandwich that had less than 2 ounces of meat on it. And even though I think I was the only customer they had for over an hour and 3 people worked on my order, they still didn't manage to make the one dinky change to the actual sandwich I requested - changing the cheese from one kind to another.
The bread was fresh. The people were nice and obviously glad that I came in. They have free wi-fi, and the place is clean and cute, if a little over-done for my taste.
