Title: Where in Tulsa?
Post by: cannon_fodder on July 18, 2008, 09:49:19 AM
William (The Artist) inspired me a few months ago with pictures of amazing houses in Tulsa.  Many people asked where those were and discussion started.  As I drive around Tulsa I've been keeping my eyes open for details - that if you have seen them you'd probably remember.  But you could very well drive by day after day and not notice.

Some on main streets.  Some at attractions. Some more obscure.  But all viewable by the public and all in Tulsa's city limits.  It's just amazing how much STUFF to see there is and how much we miss, even when it's in our own city.

So I figured I post them and encourage other people to do so, see if you can figure out where in Tulsa they come from.  Feel free to blurt it out.  From easiest, to more obscure:

This one is downtown, it is a feature of the structure and repeated around it (thought it needed a hint):

10.
And finally, I know of 2 of these within the official limits of the City of Tulsa;  a producing oil well/pump jack:

So be honest, how many did you figure out?  I think 5/10 would be a passing grade, 3 is a D.  Less than that and you need to pay attention! [;)]

Anyone know of other oil wells in the city limits (some say drilling was never allowed, perhaps drilled before annexation?)?  Feel free to guess the location.  Also, post up anything else interesting we can try to locate.  It's summer, get outside, take some pictures.

#1 is at the Zoo

1 is the zoo

7 is TCC Southeast campus. When they took down the old logos they dumped this sign in the back forty. When they expanded recently they pulled the sign back up and mounted it.

A few of them look like they came from that park on 11th street just east of downtown "T" Towne. The picture with the flame could be anywhere I have no clue. I liked the picture of the rusty oil well, but I have no idea where that is at. I have to agree that #1 is from the Zoo. (I think).

The picture is actually on the back 40 of the North East Campus.  I guess there could be on down South too.  I wondered around TCC North one day just to see it... much nicer than I had imagined.  There is a full gym, plenty of public space, outdoor areas, and even a large greenhouse and walking trail.

This ~20 foot sign is along the hiking trail.  North East of the building complex and visible from the road leading to the maintenance area.

JNE is right conan, #1 is the Zoo.  Everyone loves those things, myself included.  Also #10 was not taken in West Tulsa.  But you were right on the others:
2 is the Linnaeus Garden
3 Philbrook
4 Garden Center (green house behind the garden center)
5 Crow Creek at Philbrook

#9 is indeed the OneOK.  Great job paying attention to that detail!

6, 8 and 10 still outstanding.  Conan leading in the guessing game (self ascribed as clearly people could just read and then lie, but no prizes... so don't bother).

Close, it is in front of a church.  Not on 31st however.  I drove by this many times and thought "that's just strange, I like it."  So I took a picture.

Hello is correct.  The brick arch is randomly placed at a sidewalk leading to a parking lot at the corner of Main and 6th Street.  Seems totally out of place to me, but again, I like it.

#10 is not in the Signal Mountain area.  Not precluding a well from being there, just not that I know of.  There are houses within a stones throw of this well and a man mowing his lawn along with a guy chillin' on his porch looked at me very suspiciously when I took this picture.

I'm not sure many people would ever get #10, hence the challenge for other pump jacks in the city.  I'll post a street view of the well along with the other pump location I know (not seen on street view) this afternoon if no one guesses it.

So #8 and #10, still unknown.  Is Conan still in the lead as far as places he was able to guess?

Would #8 be Unity Church, 33rd and Jamestownish?

Hmmm, pumpjack, I was thinking Osage Dr. and about 36th N. but that's in Osage Co. if not Berryhill area.

#8 is New Jerusalem Baptist Church.  That iron work was done by Wienmann Ironworks.

Ding ding ding!

36th Street North, between Harvard and Lewis just West of the cop shop.  Birmingham and 36th St. N.  Street View (//%22http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=N+Harvard+Ave+%26+East+36th+St+N,+Tulsa,+Tulsa,+Oklahoma,+United+States&ie=UTF8&cd=2&geocode=0,36.206130,-95.940300&sll=36.11154,-95.94023&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&ll=36.20955,-95.95077&spn=0.011461,0.018625&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=36.20612,-95.953006&panoid=62ORD3Ms1sE3Rvtf9QEWIA&cbp=1,230.7874015193503,,0,0.13355148579373735%22) has an OK shot of it.  Really good iron work (iron, bronze, whatever it is).

If you give up on #10 (don't blame you, but surprised no one else knows of other pump jacks) it is here (//%22http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=N+Harvard+Ave+%26+East+36th+St+N,+Tulsa,+Tulsa,+Oklahoma,+United+States&ie=UTF8&cd=2&geocode=0,36.206130,-95.940300&sll=36.11154,-95.94023&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&ll=36.204633,-95.937939&spn=0.011462,0.018625&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=36.20155,-95.938062&panoid=Oa3Ktp9yMayCsAB8O7byxQ&cbp=1,358.77,,0,5%22).    1/2 block North of 32 Place and North Jamestown.

The other pump jack I know of is on property owned by the Gilcrease museum/Stuart park. From the the museum walk down to the pond head West to the Colonial Garden.  Keep walking down the road for about 1/4 mile.  There will be a large clearing/field on your right with a horseshoe turnaround.  On the North Side of that field (far side) in the center there is a trail head (/service road).    Following the trail North for ~100 yards you will find the well and pump jack on your left, offset maybe 25 feet west of the trail... humming along with no fence and leaking some oil.  You can make out the trail/road head here (//%22http://maps.google.com/maps?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&=&q=36th%20street%20North%20and%20Harvard%2C%20Tulsa%2C%20OK&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl%22).

If you walk further back there is a natural gas well also.  Just to the West there are TONS of pad sites visible on the SAT view - those Gilcrease is very near the municipal border so those are outside the boundary.

I get around town, I tell ya'.

I should have just said "north Tulsa" for my second pumpjack guess [}:)]

Excellent post CF.  I've only been in Tulsa a year, so I didn't recognize any of these locations.  WGPTWTA ("with gas prices the way they are," probably the most often repeated phrase so far in ought-eight) I haven't been able to drive around and enjoy the scenery (both natural and man-made) like I usually do after moving to a new area.  Posts like these is the reason I joined this forum, to learn more about the city that I was about to move to.

The Street View links are interesting.  I tried to find the TCC sign but I don't think it's visible.  Here's #6:

Here is a photo of the same location taken around 1960.  The current brick arch is located adjacent to the sidewalk on the west side of Main, approximately where the entrance below the Megee's sign was.

That street view shows where George Perryman's family's house stood from 1886 until around 1909, when it was split into two sections and moved off the property.  The large main portion of the house was moved to 1313 S Elwood Ave.

Here is a photo taken around 1897 from the same "street view" location bugo posted, when the house was at 508 S Main St.  The camera position was approximately where the brick arch is now, with the lens facing west.

To beat a dead horse a little more...

Good thing we improved the parking downtown by getting rid of all those cluttering buildings!

Per #6 on street view, it is not visible on street view.  For that matter, it is not visible on the SAT images either.  If it were, it would be centered on this page where the walking trail makes a triangle (3 way intersection).
