Title: No left turns
Post by: TheTed on June 29, 2008, 12:48:59 PM
Why do we need all these 'no left turn' signs around midtown and downtown?

Is there any good reason I can't turn left off Lewis onto 11th at 4 am? I never see so many no left turn signs in other cities, or at least the no lefts only apply during rush hours.

The ones that flip open during certain hours are even worse. Can I turn left on 7th from Denver? One sign has been open all the time for the past few weeks while the other is closed during non rush hours.

Almost as stupid: red left turn arrows. I'm a big boy. I can see if there's traffic coming and wait for it to pass before turning left. There's nothing stupider than sitting at a red left turn arrow at 4am.

I think some of those left turn arrow lights are for the benefit of pedestrians trying to cross gigantic multi-lane intersections.

Most of them need to be on rush hour only, however  I don't know if they are installed as ones with the ability to turn on/off.  Any time during a weekday, those midtown intersections definitely need the no left turn signs.

Oh, are those actually legal traffic signs?  I thought they were political admonitions given the normally conservative character of the area.  I ignored them, thinking that it was within my free speech rights to do so.

Dunno if that would carry much weight with a cop, though.

(Sorry, couldn't resist the snark.)
