Title: Restaurant Suggestions
Post by: TulsaSooner on June 24, 2008, 12:25:28 PM
Anybody have a restaurant suggestion for the following criteria:

Uniquely Tulsa (I was thinking Cherry St, downtown or Riverwalk) and for a picky eater (steaks or mexican probably).

TIA  [:D]

The Mexican restaurant at 31st and Harvard is great.  Blazin' Peppers is what it is called.  Very authentic, affordable, and damn good.  Even has a picture menu for his gringos that might want to try something new.

Uniquely Tulsa?  El Guapo is mexican and local.  Palace Cafe for steak or Lucky's?  I've never been there.  As for giving you a recommendation on being a picky eater...picky means different things to different people.  I can't help you there.

By the way, all of the above I mentiond are on Cherry Street.

..Except for El Guapo which is downtown.  Ok, I'm done spamming.

By picky eater (steaks or mexican) I was saying our group has a picky eater who would likely only be amenable to steaks or mexican.

Is El Guapo open in the evenings or is it a lunch only downtown restaurant?

McGill's at 21st & Utica has consistently excellent steaks. They're local.

Brothers Houligan at 15th & Atlanta (Just east of Lewis).  They have great steaks and various fried items.  The place feels "Uniquely Tulsa" to me more than most other stops in town.  Some of their offerings are quite affordable.

McGill's might be a little fancy for us hillbillies.  [:D]

And by unique, I probably meant more like unique areas of Tulsa such as the river, downtown, Utica Square, Cherry St, etc.

Thanks for the ideas, keep 'em coming!

For Steak--DOE'S..in the Cherry Street district. You can't come to the beef capital part of the nation, and not have a big ole steak.
Kilkenny's has a unique menu, and Hideaway has by FAR the best Pizza.

Considering your qualifications, Riverwalk, nothing comes to mind.  Los Cabos is the worst texmex I have had here and there is NO steak place there.  Downtown, El Guapo is marginal, I haven't tried Elote so I can't comment on it.  And there is no steak house open in downtown at night is there?  Cherry Street, Chimis is the only Mexican place there and there is not a true steak house there, I do not consider Doe's a traditional steak house type place besides it is very expensive and the ordering is weird.  Limiting your choices to those locations limits your choices.   There are better places outside of your given parameters.  Like down towards Riverwalk, go across the river to Kings Landing, much better food on our side of the river.  Cherry street, go for pizza.  Downtown, who eats dinner downtown?  You do have some choices over in the Brady district, Caz's for one.  I like the Chicken Fried Steak.  Mexicali's is much better than Los Cabos.  Just avoid the Spaghetti Warehouse, worst food in town contender.

Just a question, is this question being put forth by someone trying to send up a particular restaurant?

First, I'd like to reply to joiei's question of "who eats dinner downtown?"  My husband and I do, most every time we go out.  As do lots of others, as evidenced Saturday night when we tried to go to Lola's and Tsunami and both were packed, and we ended up at SoChey, which we'd been meaning to try anyway and it was excellent.  Caz's is also very good, as is McNellie's.  The Chalkboard is also good, although pricier, at the Hotel Ambassador.
Baxter's Interurban is also very good, reasonably priced and often overlooked outside of hockey season.

Now for your question, TulsaSooner, my suggestions from the above for your specific situation would be Caz's, McNellie's or Baxter's for downtown.  For Cherry Street, if your picky eater doesn't mind a bit of Italian, Mary's has an entree called "angels on horseback" that is shrimp on steak that everyone says is wonderful.  Another place that's unique to Tulsa is the Spudder at 51st and Sheridan.  Steaks served amongst oil themed memorabilia.  My favorite Mexican food and one of the best patios in town is Cafe Ole in Brookside.

Hope these are helpful- let us know where you end up going.

In the Raw has this steak and lobster meal that will blow your mind...

and the sushi is good too...and I think In the Raw is one of the best restaurants in town. It's definitely local to Tulsa and there are a couple of locations - on Brookside and on the hill at 61st and Sheridan. Picky eaters will enjoy the steak, the ones who aren't picky will enjoy the rest of the menu.

I'll echo the comments about downtown eating. There's plenty of great restaurants down there and the atmosphere is great downtown.

I'll throw in a wild card suggestion - Thyme Bistro on Harvard. Amazing food.

He said Uniquely Tulsa. Doe's is a chain based out of Mississippi.

Cafe Ole for Mexican, although I've heard it called southwestern.  Whatever you call it, I love the place. The only steak I've eaten in Tulsa was at Flemings or Spudder.  VERY different but both good...although you can probably guess which one was better.
What is the name of the Mexican place near Caz's, just to the west.  It was nothing spectacular but the area was fun and I recall the food being decent.  In the Raw has never dissapointed me but I'm pretty easily impressed with Sushi, since I don't know much about what I'm eating...I just love the stuff.

I'll second Thyme.  It's located in the strip center northeast of 31st and Harvard.

I suggest McNellie's.  It is not steak or texmex, but instead hamburger/sandwich/pub food.  There is something on the menu for everyone, even extremely picky eaters.  It presents very well with it's version of southwest modern pub.  It is locally owned, has the thousands of beers and beer mugs to talk about, and has the McNellie's brew on top.  And it is a visually and economically interesting area of downtown to be in at night.

For all of our out of town personal and business guests, we take them to McNellie's because it represents to us the best blend of old Tulsa style with new Tulsa progress.

Plus, if you ask them, they'll put chopped fresh jalapeño on your burger.

/unsolicited testimonial for McNellie's

I second Cafe Ole on Brookside. Don't have more than 2 Margaritas otherwise you'll have to call a cab [:O]

uh no, el guapos is not mexican.  more like, okie food using jalopenos and queso with a rooftop breezeway.  BFD.  same goes for los cabos.

for mexican check out senor tequilas or Mexico lindo south Tulsa locations, not the midtown dreck.

and I concur with the mcnellie's food comment above.  i think for good pub food kilkenny's is better....but thats not saying much.

I'm not a big fan of Mexico Lindo's.  They look an awful lot like La Mansion (their menu does).  I guess I was jaded from 3 years of living in Houston.  I say Ninfas is quite possibly the best TexMex place on the planet, but I don't even know if it's still open; last time I was there was over 10 years ago.

For those of you eagerly awaiting my response....

We ate at Caz's Chowhouse then drove around and showed our visitors some of Tulsa's cool downtown buildings.  The food was excellent, although the service was a little slow.  Caz's wasn't "packed" but there were several couples who came in during the evening so hopefully when downtown gets hopping, these business will do well.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
