Anyone been there? Stay away. I looked up their website and was shocked to learn that this was started by the Rutkauskas' (the same couple that started Camille's). First time I went there I ordered a couple of coneys. They bring be a couple of luke warm dogs with chili and "sam's club canned cheese". Gross. I can't believe any establishment calling themselves "coney (anything)" would serve up coneys with cheese whiz. I haven't been back, but ate there again today because I noticed a sign that says they now serve "Rex's Original Chicken". I love Rex's Chicken. I knew it well, and let me tell you that was not Rex's Chicken that I ate today. It was awful. Hard little rocks, too salty, dry meat, spices and texture were not close. I would rather eat Chicken McNuggets than those again and I don't eat at McDonalds.
There is only one place for coneys, the original Coney Islander.
I ate there once while going over to your house. The two coneys and a drink were like eight bucks. I haven't been back.
There website says that they have about thirty types of beers there, including Fat Tire. Do they really have Fat Tire beer?
I just learned that the Fresh Berry is also theirs. That is another concept that I just don't get. Basically you can have 1 of 2 flavors of soft serve ice cream - dark chocolate and "tart" (tastes like bitter cream cheese). The same two flavors, that's it. You mix in some fruit, nuts, or granola (there's about 9 mix in choices, I think), and pay about $5 for a small cup, no joke. I think even the kids cups were close to $4 each. Maggie Moos and Coldstone are both overpriced, but still cheaper than this place and have much better ice cream and more variety in their flavors and toppings (mix ins). Like I said, I just don't get it.
The heresy involved with opening up a rival coney joint in this area is unbelievable. It reminds me of when Zooks opened up in the Old Coney Island spot downtown, prompting the real Coney Island's sign about "No phoney coneys served here."
Yeah, the Zook's downtown was just alright. About 2 years later I drove up 21st near Sheridan and saw a Zook's sign. I went in to give it a try. The owner actually bought the name but the coney's were F$##ing awesome. He also re-vamped the "Zook" dog which was very good too. All you can eat was $5.00. He only stayed about 1 year and then moved to bartlesville or something. too bad.

I had a similar experience. Ate there once, 2 coneys, cold fries and a drink was around 8 dollars or so. The place was empty when I went, so I should have known better. I haven't been back since. (and that was over a year ago).

That'd give me a reason to go back. I wasn't all that impressed. I'd be surprised that Fat Tire was there because I was told you couldn't buy it here because Fat Tire needs to be sold cold and our liquor laws prevent it.

Zook. I wonder if i didn't know people by the name of Zook. Seriously, i think i knew someone by that last name?
I do like fresh berry..its okay if I want something different than ice cream or a overpriced starbucks..and its not really that unresonable under 4 bucks for a kids size(which in reality is all I want to eat for sweets)...coney beach..never been...have not really wanted to go....but I have heard it was over priced as well...Papa murphys right next door to fresh berry..now there is some good take and bake pizza!
I went to Coney Beach last night and had the chicken It was really good. Maybe it's taking them some time to get the hang of it. The first time I went they were a little overpriced. But after last night I will make a return trip.

Owasso.. And they moved the Italian place next door too...
I never did hear if either one reopened.
they do have Fat Tire beer....but BFD.
with the exception of the all beef coney, that place is gross.
This is one time Camille's will FAIL.
Anyone see the piece on Coney Beach in the business section this morning? Apparently, they have aquired the rights and recipes to Pennington's Drive In and Rex Chicken. I knew the last guy who owned the Rex recipe and it didn't work out so well (King's Chicken) at 81st & Yale.
When they talked to David in the paper, he kept saying they were still working on the different original foods like black-bottom pie, fried shrimp and the chicken. Seems to me if they had gotten the original recipes, there wouldn't be a whole lot of tweaking.
FAT TIRE?!?!?!?! Ok, now I have to go there.
If they have Fat Tire then they're definitely breaking some type of liquor law, right?

As far as I know, New Belgium Brewing does NOT ship to Oklahoma. They do have the OK+ on their labels but that is all.
Coney Beach SUCKS! Can't believe what you read in the Tulsa World. Over rated...over priced! Food COLD! Portions MINI! Not Rex's chicken recipe or Penningtons shrimp recipe. Restaurant DIRTY, teenage workers.

They wouldn't be breaking a liquor law if they're selling to an establishment. I believe the caveat for them to sell to any establishment was that the beer had to meet their refrigeration guidelines. If you sell to a pub or restaraunt, they don't have to store high point beer unrefrigerated like the liquor stores do.
It's such a stupid law that I could never understand.

Wow..and with 1 post the new guy chimes in with credibility....so KK how about you tell us when you went and what you ordered...obviously you didn't order chicken, shrimp and coneys all on the same day? Right?

When I visited New Belgium a couple years back and took the tour the bartendar at the end of the tour ID'd everyone and joked when he saw my OK license and sorry we can't sell in your state. I begrudgingly said yes I know. It's all about the pasteurization process that they use.
The couple of time I been there I thought it was good, and no I'm not an employee or owner. I had the Tijuana Dog, it was something different than just chili and cheese. They didn't have the Rex's chicken yet and I didn't live here when Pennington's was around, but I heard a lot about it. Their is a restaurant in Bixby called KariOkie that has a lot of the Pennington's stuff, I haven't been there yet but the people I know that have swear by it. One place I miss and I think they had them in Tulsa long ago is Wienerschnizel, it was a late night hangout where I went to school and I still think they have the best chili.

The KariOkie is good to excellent. The shrimp (HUGE, I just get 3 on a dinner order)are close, the onion strings are darn near almost, and the black bottom pie (when they have it) is "tons."

The reason the food at KariOkie reminds you of Penninton's is because the woman that owns the place worked as a cook at Penningtons.

BBI Bringing Food Legends Back to Tulsa
By Tulsa Business Staff - 6/20/2008
Beautiful Brands International, the parent company of Coney Beach, announced today it will begin serving recipes from two Tulsa restaurant food legends, Pennington's Drive-In and Rex's Chicken.
BBI recently established two new entities, Pennington's Drive-In, Inc. and Rex Chicken, Inc., under which it will hold all the names and recipes associated with these brands. Both plan to license the recipes of some of their most popular items exclusively to the Coney Beach restaurant at 111th and South Memorial for local testing and possible nationwide roll-out of new menu products on the Coney Beach menu.
Pennington's Drive-In saw its peak popularity in the 60's, becoming a favorite hangout to teenagers and families in the Brookside area. It became famous for its fried shrimp basket and onion rings. Rex's Chicken was well-known for its chicken chunks, chicken sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, and fried chicken cobb salad. Coney Beach will exclusively showcase these favorites on their new menu beginning June 2008.
A favorable reception of these favorite food items from Pennington's and Rex's may lead to a nationwide rollout into all Coney Beach locations, and the eventual creation of these two food brands as new restaurant concepts under Beautiful Brands International.
Coney Beach is one of three concepts privately held by Beautiful Brands International. BBI was founded under the leadership of David and Camille Rutkauskas and is responsible for the launch of worldwide, franchised brands including Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, Coney Beach, and FreshBerry Frozen Yogurt Cafe.

I don't really understand trying to introduce Rex's & Pennington's in the Coney Beach restaurants. These were Tulsa classics and the rest of the world probably could care less. Concentrate on getting the coney's right first. Then try saltwater taffy and lemonade. After all, it's
Coney Beach! Not Restless Ribbon Beach, or Tulsa Chicken Beach, or ...
If I want a real coney in Tulsa, I'll go to Coney I-Lander, where they 'Haven't changed a bite since 1926'
If anyone can do lemonade like Chic Filet does Lemonade I am there..but I agree..having "high fructose lemonade" next to pepsi isn't my idea of a beach..I think the company got this concept all wrong....
I never thought an "upscale" hot dog place would make money.
Give me the three dogs and drink special at the Coney Islander downtown and I'm happy. Oh yea, throw on a little hot sauce and it's just right.
Beach food to me is eating a split Anegada lobster on at Big Bambu on Anegada Island in the BVI's or conch fritters. Now that's beach food!

+1. I will drive downtown with my fiancee for the 3 coney special (I get 4 now though) just for the free drink! THANK GOD FOR FREE GAS!!. I drove by there a couple of Saturday's ago with my dad to eat lunch and come to find out, they are closed now on Saturday's. Which came as a shock, because it was typically always busy on Saturday especially before an oilers hockey game or Talons football game.

There's another 10 or so around the metro area isn't there? Probably one much closer to you, or is the one downtown the only one with the drink special?
Give the one at 41st & Yale around the corner from the AMC 20 a try (east side, same complex). That's always been my favorite, 11th St. is 2nd favorite. No particular reason since Coney I-Lander makes all their chili at the same place on N. Lewis and all the provisions come from the same place. Totally psychosematic, I'm sure.
FYI, plan is for CI to start marketing their chili through grocery stores in the near future.

I am a coney islander freak. I have tried them all around here. The one in jenks (the closest to me) is pretty good. The one by AMC on 41st doesnt take debit cards, and I very rarely carry cash. The one downtown is by far the best and the only that I know of that has the drink special. It isnt much, but its been their special since I was growing up. The one by woodland hills mall at 71st isnt that good IMO. Plus I am kinda partial to the seats at the downtown coney islander. I remember when it was across the street next to that old bar. My dad and I would go to the booksale in the basement at the central library downtown, then walk down the street to coney islander, eat some coneys and then have a relaxing afternoon. Oh those were the days!

They were open 10-8 Monday-Saturday less than two years ago. After two rounds of trimming their hours, they're only open 10-7 Monday-Friday.
I really hope the arena and the other new restaurants in that arena lead to the Coney Islander being open later and on Saturdays.
Am I wrong in thinking that the one downtown is a coney "island" and the other ones around town coney "islanders" and they are in fact not related at all?
Also don't forget to visit "Gus" at 21st and Garnett...still there after 30 years(+) ask for Squeeze cheese..its behind the counter...these coneys will knock out all the others above (except the one downtown)....try it out if you can get in the door at lunch...regulars have tried to keep this place under wraps...guess im letting the cat outta the bag...
I love Gus! I haven't found any other squeeze cheese like it. My family has been going there for about 30 years now.

They are related, the Coney Islanders are a spin off chain from the original Coney Island downtown.
Coney Island > Coney Islander
Coney & Beach should probably not go together.
Coney, Chicken and Onion Ring Beach is just silly.
Drove by the other day and they have a sign up saying Rex's Chicken coming soon. They dumping the coney's or what? Anybody try their chicken is it anything close to Rex's?

no they just serve rex's chicken, they arent putting a rex there. and rex's chicken was gross...who would want to bring back that crap.
Looks like they are building out the space next door to Coney Beach to become a separate Rex's

an italian restaurant (I dont care if they say they are a bistro) that doesn't serve you bread when you sit down it a major failure in my book. Oliveto is like saying "wow, Panera isn't expensive enough for me, I need to go spend MORE on bread and pasta".
it has to have free bread
I first came across Rex Chicken at Li'l Abner's Dairyette in Catoosa, way back in the mid '70s. CJ's at 21st & Garnett had it too. It gave little burger joints like Li'l Abner's an easy way to add chicken to the menu. Seems like you could order the chicken by itself, with fries, or with fries and a salad.
It was sometime around 1980 that they opened a Rex Restaurant -- there was one southeast of 71st & Memorial.
I used to bring home a family pack from the 15th St. store (now Paradise Donuts) or the 81st & 145th store: Grilled chicken (half with jalapenos, half without), okra, coleslaw, and fry bread.
I'm thinking the restaurants finally faded away around 2000. Rex chicken as a menu item in someone else's restaurant brings it full circle.

I have to side with Inteller on this. The "Rex's Chicken" at Coney beach has nothing in common with the real Rex' Chicken other than the name. It was horrible. No, beyond horrible.
The Coney's are ok at best. For what they cost though they should cause spontaneous orgasms when you bite into one.

[}:)] that is great. did they give you one of their "ideal cards" or whatever the hell they are...outsourced frequent eater cards. "Ideal Card....ideally accepted everywhere but in reality accepted no where"
These guys should have stuck to camille's....these concepts suck suck suck. bring something original to Tulsa...like a reasonably priced tapas place. Oh and Fresh Berry is the biggest concept ripoff I've ever seen. You can't tell me they had never heard of Pinkberry. I'm surprised Pinkberry hasn't sued yet.
Rex's Chicken from the Linda Mar Drive-in was the best! I miss it. Charlie's Chicken is doing a jalapeno chicken that's pretty good, but it ain't Rex's.

I thought he liked Purina Troll Chow.
I really do miss Rex's grilled chicken, green beans, and fried bread. My family used to go once a week to the one on 15th, man do I feel old and I'm only 25. There are only 2 food related things I miss Rex's chicken and the Wendy's salad bar.[:D]
that sounds like something you can cook at home.
Maybe they should just sell the fry mix at the grocery store. At this point I think Coney Beach is just looking for any **** they can sell to stay in business.
My mom used to take me to the Rex's around 71st and Lewis (it is a mexican restaurant now) in the early 90's. I liked the jalepeno chicken bites and fried bread with honey. At some point it seemed like they really cut down on the portion sizes and jacked the prices way up, so mom wouldn't take me there anymore. The last one I remember was located at 101st and Sheridan or Yale I believe.
We went to Coney Beach and my mother ordered the Pennington shrimp, she said it was disgusting. I had a burger that wasn't any better or worse than burger king. The fries were marginal, but the ranch dip was fabulous. The only good thing about the trip was that they gave me the recipe for the dip, which they probably weren't supposed to do. The prices are way too high and the food is NOT worth coming back for.
There is a Greek restaurant in the strip center just to the east. The girls are very friendly, the prices reasonable, the atmosphere is relaxing and clean, and the food is absolutely yummy!! Sorry, can't remember the name of it. If you like Greek food, it's worth the drive.

Is that the spin off from ShishKaBob's over at 31st and Garnett?
I'll agree on Pita Place not being worth it. The food is fine enough, but it's EXACTLY like the food at the "It's Greek to Me" places at Woodland and Promenade malls, only at twice the price. I'd rather go there when I'm jonesing for a gyro.
Come to think of it, they're opening up a new location at the Spiritbank events center, which is near Pita Place.

yeah when they go in at Spirit, Pita place is doomed.

Mythos in Joplin, Mo. (Yes, I said Joplin). Excellent service and very good Greek food.
I have seen Mythos when on business in Joplin. What do you recommend to order? Don't say everything, how is the lamb, do they have seafood, etc. I love greek and since we don't really have a first class Greek restaurant, I will drive, I have to be up that way in the next couple of weeks on business.
