Title: What's the beef (in Korea)?
Post by: cannon_fodder on June 10, 2008, 11:28:01 AM
People are pissed in Korea that the government is going to allow consumers to buy US beef again.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/06/10/skorea.beef.ap/index.html

I mean really pissed.  Tens of thousands protesting (80K!).  Cars on fire.  Police shooting tear gas.  The whole thing, and it's been going on for about a month now.

Beef imports from the US have been banned since the Mad-Cow scare in 2004.  8 herds were destroyed in an effort to stop the spread (on 3 confirmed cases of Mad Cow).  3 people in the U.S. contracted the disease.

The import would be of young cattle meat only, no brain, spine or or nervous tissue (which are the portions that can transmit the disease).  US beef will be labeled as such.  And no one would be forced to eat it.

I don't get the big deal.  So long as you don't eat infected brain matter or the brain of a person that gets infected, you will be fine.  In the US, where we eat lots of US beef... we've had 3 cases EVER.

The threat of injury from the protests is greater than the threat from the beef.

What am I missing?

Far Eastern countries are notoriously finicky about imported foods and downright nationalistic about their farmers.

If there's the slightest hint of trouble with imported food at all, they go apesh*t over it.

You could read reams of material about how much trouble the U.S. had in trying to export rice to Japan.

It's really not easy to determine when or where someone contracted cjd.....Those folks are just looking for a reason to jump up and down....

2)Feminists are protesting the designation, "mad cow disease," arguing that if a cow becomes mad it is because of something the bull said or did.

3)One farmer says to another farmer that he had to shoot one of his cows? "Was it mad?" asks the other farmer. The farmer replies "Well it wasn't very happy about it".

4)One day two cows were chatting over the fence between their two fields. The first cow said, "I'm telling you, this mad cow disease is getting pretty scary! I've heard it's spreading so fast that it's already on Farmer Brown's land just down the road!"

The second cow replied, "So what? It doesn't affect us chickens!"

5)Signs your cow may have gone mad...

She starts giving you Milk of Amnesia.

Your cow starts smoking its grass rather than eating it.

Your cow spends half the day sitting in the Lotus Position chanting "MOO" backwards.

Your cow insists that it can give you chocolate milk if you started feeding it Hershey bars.

Your cow asks you to brand it again but only if you'll wear something sexy this time.
