Title: BOK Center storm-worthiness
Post by: bacjz00 on June 01, 2008, 07:32:17 PM
Just read about how the BOK Tower (Williams) and One Technology Center both had broken windows on the south side of their buildings from this morning's severe storms.  Any word on how the glass wall of the new arena fared??

I'm guessing it stood up well considering the amount of engineering that went into it.  This was a direct hit by all accounts so it's a good time to showcase how well it fared (if indeed it came through unscathed).

Looks ok from this vantage point:

Each pain of glass is stress tested in high wind conditions multiple times before it is even installed. The curve of the walls will also help as it won't develop the kinda of pressure gradients a flat wall will.

The wind did move the camera over, however.

This is excellent news.  We defintely are getting our money's worth in this aspect.  I'm glad to hear the center is unharmed.

I posted this in a different thread, but I wanted to point out that the BOK (Williams) Tower only sustained damage because a "window washer's" platform was suspended from ropes up against the building.  During the storm it repeatedly bashed against the building and broke the glass (and dented/punctured some of the metal facade).  Sounds like the OTC was damaged by flying debris...again, not the wind specifically.

I would expect the arena to be stable since we upped the budget by $2-$3 million just to engineer it to 100mph wind specs.

Actually, if I remember right, during the last tour, Mr. Eggleston indicated to us the glass is rated to 110 mph winds, which is a little more than what is required by code here.

Actually he said the code required 80Mph glass and they installed 90 Mph glass.
