I'm surprised that there are no American Idol threads yet... Whether you like the show or not, Tulsa just got some (and will get more) free publicity out of David Cook's win.
I want to be Recycle Idol, but am more idiot than idol.
We were about an hour behind on watching and just when we got to the point where Ryan said "and the winner of American Idol 2008 is David..." we get the DVR pop up: "would you like to erase this now?" AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH
But we knew who won before that because KRM-freaking-G sent us a text announcing that David Cook won.
So it was ruined in every possible way. [B)] [:P] Oh well... LOL Glad he won. He'll hit the ground runnin' and I will definitely buy his CD. Seems like such a good guy.

THAT TOTALLY HAPPENED TO ME TOO! Actually, I was watching it live, but was recording two shows starting at 9:00, so my DVR switched over to another channel right at that moment. I was so mad! Haha.
I'm glad it's over. It's surpassed NASCAR and OU Football on my list of things that suck.
Forgive me for not wetting myself with glee, but I am unsure why we should be excited. Heck, Melinda Doolittle was a Union grad and she would not even claim Tulsa as her stomping grounds. When Cook was busting his chops in T-town neither the World or Urban Posers did any writeup on him or the Kings. The best amateur vocalist in Merca and our locals missed it. Magine that.
I'm sure the list grows longer by the day of David's "best friends", people who loaned him money during the lean times, and those who slept with him.
For the record, I never slept with him. [}:)]
Good job to a local guy. I think he's got a huge career ahead of him. He would have anyhow even if he'd gone out in an earlier round.

His version of Billy Jean was cool. Think he'll come back and play at the Snail again?

Better chance of me turning liberal before that happens, Waterboy. [}:)]
I'd like to think that he'd want to play the Snail or Blank Slate again, but I think with his notoriety, that's about impossible. Probably could have gotten away with it in the early rounds.
Why does everyone seem to think this guy is from Tulsa? He's not. He has even said it on national T.V. he's from Blue Springs, MO. He just happened to come to Tulsa for a short period of time and then moved back. Why is the news and everyone acting like a desperate girlfriend clinging to this guy?
"Anybody here from Queens?
Me, I come from regular parents."
Stand up comedy in New York...

He may not have grown up here, but even he has said that he came to Tulsa specifically for the music scene and it was because he came to Tulsa that he was able to develop.... and during the last five years or so, he's been playing with local bands like Midwest Kings... Until he left for Idol, I'm pretty sure he was still calling Tulsa home. Desperate girlfriend? I think not.
Even the KC Star mentioned in a story last week that the he was formerly of Blue Springs and now calls Tulsa home. It specifically mentioned Tulsa as his home.
He moved back to Blue Springs already and on T.V. he said he calls Blue Springs home even after mentioning that he lived in Tulsa a short bit. He's not from Tulsa so he's not "Tulsa's own". Where did he do his radio interviews when he went home?..Kansas City. Where did he go home on his break from Idol before the finals?....Blue Springs. Where was the watch party televised live?...Blue Springs. What mayor greeted him when he came home? Blue Springs Mayor...c'mon Tulsa. Let it go. You look like a desperate girlfriend starving for attention.

He ALSO said on National TV that he was from Tulsa, OK...

Correct. When he auditioned he was living in Tulsa. He moved back to Blue Springs after the audition and EVERY SINGLE mention of his hometown after that audition tape he calls BLUE SPRINGS, MISSOURI HIS HOMETOWN. LET IT GO TULSA.
American Idol profile for you desperate girlfriends.

American Idol can't keep it straight. They once talked about "his hometown of blue springs" while showing b-roll of Tulsa. His words are that he grew up in Blue Springs but came to Tulsa after he decided to pursue music. He is somewhat of a product of Tulsa but he's not "from here" per se.
Here's an IDOL forum thread about the whole annoying thing. I guess others have wondered why we keep trying to lay claim to him too.

You're really hung up on this... My point in the original post was that just by him moving here to join the Tulsa music scene, it gives Tulsa some free publicity.
You must be the Tulsa president of the Archuleta fan club!
My theory has been that since Alaina Whitaker was from Tulsa (and probably only Tulsa) they had him change it. Can't have two goin' to Hollywood from the same place -- one less thing for people to ***** about, I guess.
Actually I was rooting for Cook. I just didn't understand the excitement locally. It seemed sophomoric all things considered.

I agree, why would we want someone to mention TULSA (check youtube for evidence) on Jay Leno, Regis, Ellen, etc, etc, etc...
That show sucks....Except for all the ones they show that can't sing...Now that I get a kick out of...

It sounds like you are the one hung up on it. He lived in Tulsa for the last couple of years, including up until he went on Idol. He himself mentioned on the show he lived in Tulsa and has credited Tulsa musically. No one has ever claimed he was from Tulsa originally. Chill out.
And for what it's worth, he lists Tulsa as his home on his official MySpace. [:)]
I admit to liking the show and wanting Cook to win from the first time I saw him, doubly so when I found out he was "from" Tulsa.
the other David was talented, but it was like eating at Applebees, you knew exactly what you were going to get, everyone has one just like it, and while it is good it's really nothing special. Seemed like a good kid though, but I'd probably not stick around to listen to him if he were playing at Mayfest.
I usually watch the early-season shows when all the dumb-asses make a fool of themselves, skip the mid season shows, and watch the final 5 or so broadcasts. I find it interesting that the ratings demographics show the average American Idol viewer is now in the 40+ age range. Right On!!! I think this greatly contributed to David Cook's win, and I believe he was the rightful winner.
Mr. Cook is a great talent, and he seems underwhelmed by the media attention and celebrity. I hope he maintains this attitude, although he deserves all the fortune his tallent will afford.
All I know is that I watched Idol this year only because I heard that Cook was from Tulsa or had worked here or whatever. In all the interviews I have heard with him, he talks about how hot the Tulsa Music scene is; and we should all be thanking him for maybe getting some young people interested in playing music around here, and maybe we could have the reputation like Austin (where, by the way, I used to go in my post college years to hear music).. Maybe we should be capitalizing on Cookie and all the Idols when they come to Tulsa on Sept 13 (at the BOK Center) and have a parade and festival for them to celebrate Cookies' win. That is what we should be doing, instead of worrying if he is truly "from Tulsa." He gave us some pretty good mileage in his post Idol win in about a dozen interviews...here is a taste of it, but some interviews have more specifics about Tulsa music....Other highlights from Cook's exit interview with the press:
On his musical journey: "When I graduated from college, I had a choice of moving to Tulsa and playing music or staying in Kansas City and getting a real job. I moved to Tulsa to join a band called the Midwest Kings and they needed a guitar and I'd known them for years and consider them great friends. So it just seemed like I didn't give up on music and I didn't think music was ready to give up on me, so I just made the decision to chase the dream a little bit. I think working in the clubs and the bars and stuff, I mean it helped me from a humility standpoint. You get pretty humble playing shows to five people and having that experience made the Idol experience all the sweeter."

I have way too much time on my hands. A girl that works on the David Community Fan Site told me that David Cook was in Tulsa on Friday night. Came straight here after his worldwin tour to NY this week, and then she had this posted on her message boards. KC and Tulsa claim David Cook hometown boy. You all will love this, one chic says in this interview, Tulsa has enough to claim....

Talked Tulsa up on Regis & Kelly, (//%22http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1w7K7zSFgfw%22) then again on Ellen. (//%22http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eSXEkJarms%22)
Suck it, KC!! (http://members.cox.net/tulsamini/smilies/haha.gif)
he is a nice enough guy, talked to him several occasions last year...
after the midwest kings, in feb 07, he opened for the pearls (for about a month or so) at the continental every thurs... he was the paunchy guy with no real job/band... but always willing to open... funny enough, i thought then he had a decent voice but, the american idol talent show crap makes me want to wretch... i find it ironic that the midwest kings had been to new york to showcase for several labels and went unsigned...
ai is a talent show... and cook has talent... but it is not my cup of tea...
