Title: Where's my free money?
Post by: waterboy on May 20, 2008, 10:30:07 PM
I've gotten two letters so far explaining that my government check is "in the mail". Turns out that I am in that first group to be mailed but what they don't tell you is that it is based on when you sent in your taxes and when they are processed. Since I sent on the 14th, it wasn't processed till a week later which means mine won't be sent till the end of May at the earliest. But here's the kicker. They decided that my 14 year old son is not a qualifying child for the tax incentive. Why? I don't know. They just reduced the amount by $300. Word is that they screwed up a lot of the checks and kids are not being included. Corrections to come later. Do we do anything right anymore?

Why do it right when doing it wrong saves so much money?

Like those ISP's who automatically bill your checking account for months after you cancel.

It's just like regular revenue only you don't have to work for it.

Yeah those checks are a joke, it won't help the economy, but it'a always better to have money in the people's hands over the goverments hands. The less money the gov't gets the better- What would help the economy IMO would be to have the gov't subsidize fuel prices, high fuel prices are what is dragging the economy down. People are putting all their extra spending money in the fuel tank and after paying for housing and electric and other must-pay bills  they don't have anything left to spend, another idea would be if the gov't would freeze the pump prices at say $2.50 a gallon and all gasoline prices  over $2.50 the gov't pays to station owners and oil companies. As an example if gasoline is $4.00 a gallon the customer pays only $2.50 a gallon and the other $1.50 the gov't pays or something like that. I feel that would help the economy more than a rebate check.. Oil just hit $130.00 a barrel and if something is not done we'll have big problems. Congress still refuses to drill Alaska. makes me wonder what happen next summer and 2-3 years in the future with oil proces. Truckers are getting hurt more & more.

So in other words, you pay for it either way.

I had to search through all the find print to find out why I didn't get my check.  Turns out, if you pay for your processing fee with you refund, they send you a check for the rebate, even if you had your refund direct deposited.

"* Filing and/or preparation fees were deducted from your refund or you received a rapid refund from your preparer. You will be receiving a check instead of a direct deposit. Please see the Paper Check Payment Schedule below. "

This is the part that "got" me.  Doh!  I have to wait until the end of June now.

This is the part I was confused on as well. I've used TaxCut for years...deducted the cost on my taxes...and e-filed. So...I thought I would be one of those receiving a paper check.

Nope...got my check on May 16th...direct deposited. We filed jointly and have 2 kids...but only received $1200. According to their rules...we had no tax liability last year (which is true...the adoption tax credit reduced our tax liability to zero). So...we only received $600 for filing jointly...and $300 for each kid.

Crazy and convoluted system...but it's paying for our vacation.

Lucky you, I don't get mine till July.  Last batch out.  Too bad they didn't go by who filed first, since I filed on the 2nd of Janurary.

I'm still waiting to receive my "Midtown Money Belt!"

(I assume it has one of those little secret zipper compartments...and is just crammed with cash!)

I was joking. You can't make too much money or be too good looking. I am not in any danger of either.

Those of us in the "Midtown Elite" already have ours, fashioned from the skin of babies and North Tulsans.

Waterboy, I heard the your mailman got a check for a couple of extra kids.  [;)]

But in reality, this just proves that our government is SO incompetent it can't even give money away correctly.

Well, it could be worse: it could be Matthew "Playing the Riddler in the next Batman movie" Lesko giving away the money!

Well, at least you are entitled to a rebate check.  Due to my economic situation and sources of income, I get -0-, zilch dollars from this plan.

Previous comments are correct, this "stimulus rebate" will do nothing but drive up the federal deficit and force higher debt burden on future generations, further cripling the U.S. economy.  Pure political pandering, at the expense of future generations.

The Outstanding Public Debt as of 26 May 2008 at 09:51:24 PM GMT is:
#65532;

The estimated population of the United States is 304,061,351
so each citizen's share of this debt is $30,911.89.
The National Debt has continued to increase an average of
$1.62 billion per day since September 28, 2007!
Concerned? Then tell Congress and the White House!

Your free money has not yet been added in the  total your  great great grand  children are expected to  pay.

Lets reword it to say  WHERE IS THE FREE MONEY THAT THOSE UNBORN WILL PAY ME.

Hey waterboy -- did you ever get your rebate?

I have no idea when we'll get ours. We filed electronically with TurboTax on April 15 and paid what we owed by debit to our account. Expected the rebate to show up in that account by now.

Dangit. I want a new washer and dryer! [:D]

If you owed money, did you remember to put your bank info on the tax form. There was no reason to (so I forgot) except to get your incentive check sooner.

Agree with that. In my review of these rebate checks, it seems the people who are not getting them would be the ones that most likely would spend the money as intended.

A little update. They sent me a letter telling me that they had refigured my taxes and found out that I actually owe them money so...they subtracted the amount from my stimulus check and told me I had a small check coming soon.

It seems that when my paper form was transcribed they left off my two children living at home. The same ones I had last year and the year before and before.....When I called and gave them the ss #'s they refigured and Presto! came up with the same figures I had. So they will send me my regular overpayment in 4-5 weeks plus the rest of my stimulus check in 4-5 weeks and no apologies. He recommended that I electronic file next time.

Gee, if the checks weren't going to clear they could have just told me to hold on to them for 4-6 weeks. They didn't have to create this fiction!
