Tulsa City Council 2008 Questionnaire Results

Rocky Frisco, Candidate for District 4

1. For the first time in 30 years, Tulsa will be creating a new Comprehensive Plan. What do you think are the key issues that need to be addressed in the Comp Plan?

I think such "plans" are a waste of time and money. We need to pay our bills, avoid further debt, respect the personal choices of citizens and residents and stop trying to micromanage their lives and property. Prosperity comes from liberty and the free market, not governmental meddling.

2. What kind of downtown do you envision for Tulsa? What kind of downtown do you think we need in order to compete effectively with other cities?

All previous efforts at "tuning" the downtown area have managed to ruin the area and kill commercial success. I envision the kind of downtown that will result from the city government butting the hell out of the matter and letting it grow naturally, as it was doing before all of the meddling started. We should strive for our own excellence, NOT compete with other cities.

3. What steps can Tulsa take to stop the sales tax drain from the city to suburban municipalities?

What? More meddling with the free market? If we pay our bills and stop piling up more debt, we won't be so hungry for tax revenue that we need to keep messing with the natural processes of business and the choices of the citizens and residents of the area. What we need is less governmental meddling, not more.

4. 30% of Tulsans don’t drive (the young, the elderly, the disabled, those who can’t afford a car, and those who prefer to walk or bike). What can we, as a city, do to make Tulsa more walkable? What role should mass transit play in Tulsa’s future?

If mass transit is viable, private commercial interests will build it. If it won't be profitable, why should the city government force citizens to pay for it through taxes? Why make the city "more walkable" when nobody wants to walk? Government meddling and spending tax money simply can't fix everything. That's how we got into this financial mess in the first place.

5. The current city council passed a resolution requiring police officers to check the immigration status of “all suspected illegal aliens.” Do you support or oppose this resolution and why?

I strongly oppose it because it's unAmerican. How will an officer know whether a person is "suspected" without "profiling?" It places unacceptable responsibility on the officers and diverts their attention away from fighting serious crime. Let the Chief run the Police Department; that's his job, not the council's.

6. What should the City of Tulsa do to help support historic preservation efforts, both in neighborhood and downtown? Do you think “old” buildings are important to our future? Why/why not?

It's too late to try to pen this horse; the barn has already been burned down. The four historic theaters of downtown, plus the Will Rogers and Delman theaters have already been destroyed, as well as the Cimarron Ballroom downtown. Commercial value and money will always trump historicity and esthetic value in this city.

7. If an anonymous donor wanted to give each council district $5 million to be spent in any way, how would you spend it?
