Introduction

This report is the second volume of information gleaned from the Mayor's Vision Summit, convened by Tulsa Mayor Bill LaFortune on July 9 with 1,100 participants. This volume contains three appendixes with typed versions of some 4,000 ideas for Tulsa's future, submitted by the participants during the Summit and in more than 100 emails sent to Mayor LaFortune after the Summit.

Contents In the afternoon of the vision workshop, participants were asked to summarize their visions and ideas in response to four general questions and one essay question. After the workshop, the Mayor also invited the public to submit their ideas and comments via email. This report focuses on the afternoon and email responses, divided into several appendixes:

Comments received from working table groups

Responses to Question 1: "There is one thing on which we can probably all agree: We like Tulsa. Change, however, is inevitable. Tulsa, like every other city in the world, is in a constant process of change. As we look to the future, we can seek to protect those qualities that make our city a good place to live. Please describe those good qualities that Tulsa has now that you feel need to be maintained, regardless of what changes happen in the future."

Responses to Question 2: "As we look at Tulsa today, we can see many changes emerging. Some of these changes are good things that can make our city a better place. What new things do you see beginning in Tulsa that should be nurtured and developed during coming years?"

Responses to Question 3: "There are probably some things about Tulsa that some of us wish were different. No place is perfect. Please describe the things you consider negative about Tulsa that you would like to see changed, and explain why."

Responses to Question 4: "We have now discussed the things we most like about Tulsa, as well as things we would like to see different. There may also be things or qualities we feel are missing in Tulsa…things perhaps you have seen in other cities, or even things that Tulsa may have once had but has lost. What would you like to see added to Tulsa in the future that would make it a more successful city, or would make it a better place to live for you and your family or friends?"

Individual comment sheets with responses to Question 5: "Do you have a specific idea for something you would like to see in Tulsa's future? This Mayor's Vision Summit is only the first stage in a process of planning for the future. Because it is only the first stage, our focus today is primarily on identifying broad qualities important to Tulsa which should form the foundation for our goals. The four questions that your table will be considering as a group are all designed to help achieve this purpose. However, you may already have a specific idea that you would like to recommend to Mayor LaFortune and to the members of the City Council."

Process

The data was checked and verified for accuracy and read by a small group of volunteers, who identified several dozen key words and synonyms, such as downtown, beauty, and elderly, that appeared throughout the comments. Comments were then sorted by those key words and arranged into about a dozen major themes, such as transportation, quality of life, and culture.

The reviewing volunteers then re-read the material and developed summaries by each question and by each major theme.

The main report contains their summaries for the top ten major themes.

This report contains the full range of materials received, which will be open for public review and inspection so interested readers can see the comments in their entirety. This report does not include names on individuals' submissions. For the reader's reference, the following pages also contain a collection of representative quotes and a chart of key words used in the analysis.
