TULSANOW is a grass-roots, non-partisan, volunteer organization that is concerned about the well-being and prosperity of Tulsa and the surrounding region, now and for future generations. It issued the following statement on the Crutchfield Neighborhood Plan. This release is relevant to the Tulsa City Council meeting on Thursday, July 22. TulsaNow believes that it is vital for our city's long-term prosperity to take an entirely fresh look at land use planning. As Tulsa seeks to revitalize its downtown and its older neighborhoods, it's apparent that current policies, designed in the 1970s for suburban development on open fields, are inadequate to the task. Homeowners, business owners, developers, and planners must work together on ways to accommodate new development while preserving and enhancing what is already good about our city. We therefore applaud the approval of the Crutchfield Neighborhood Plan by the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and the Tulsa City Council. Crutchfield, which lies between US 75 and Utica, I-244 and Pine, encompasses residential, industrial, and commercial properties. The Plan embraces that mixture as one of the neighborhood's unique qualities. We commend neighborhood residents and business owners and planners from Tulsa's Urban Development Department and INCOG for the cooperation and creativity evident in the Plan. We thank TMAPC and the Council for adopting it enthusiastically. We hope TMAPC and the Council will follow through with the creation of neighborhood conservation zoning districts, needed to implement the Crutchfield plan fully. And we encourage Tulsans to learn more about land use issues by visiting www.tulsanow.org
