I may not have agreed with Buckley in terms of ideology, but I must say that he set something of a standard that the likes of Hannity, Coulter etc could only dream of attaining-presuming they even aspired to that level of greatness.

Aside from being a Godfather to modern conservatism, he was a hell of a sailor.  Two biggies in my books, especially the sailor part.  [:P]

It's a shame that few of the modern-day pundits on either side of the ideological fence can match him in terms of erudition or sensibility.

He was quite a wordsmith. We laughed at him in the sixties because his politics was anything but mainstream at the time, but he laughed at himself too. Ran for Mayor in NY and when asked what his first act would be if elected he said, "Ask for a recount."

His counterpart, Gore Vidal was a hoot.
